Reports
background
The teams McLaren , Ferrari , Renault and Alfa Romeo started the new season with the same drivers with whom they had ended the 1984 season . At Tyrrell , the contracts with Martin Brundle and Stefan Johansson were extended after Stefan Bellof fell out with the team boss.
Keke Rosberg's new team-mate at Williams was Nigel Mansell , while Jacques Laffite returned to Ligier . There he ousted François Hesnault , who then replaced Teo Fabi at Brabham . Mansell's former place at Team Lotus as Elio de Angelis's team-mate was taken by Ayrton Senna , whose contract signing had already caused a stir at the Italian Grand Prix last year .
Following the withdrawal of ATS , Gerhard Berger was hired by Arrows to become the second regular driver alongside Thierry Boutsen . Besides Philippe Alliot went Manfred Winkelhock for RAM Racing at the start.
The Spirit Racing and Osella Squadra Corse teams continued to compete with just one vehicle. The only new team, Minardi , too.
Since Michelin had withdrawn from Formula 1 as a tire supplier and the two remaining suppliers, Goodyear and Pirelli , only wanted to equip a maximum of eight teams each, the Toleman team was unable to start the season due to a lack of tires.
Almost all teams brought new racing cars to the start right on time for the season opener. Spirit and McLaren, however, limited themselves to the evolutionary stages of their models from the previous year. Tyrrell and Osella were the only two teams that used only last year's vehicles. The engines have hardly changed compared to those used in the 1984 season. Only Renault used in its own works team further developed units from the previous year and also made them available to the Ligier customer team.
training
As there were only 25 drivers present, everyone could qualify for the race.
Michele Alboreto reached pole position with the new Ferrari 156/85 in front of Keke Rosberg and the two Lotus drivers Elio de Angelis and Ayrton Senna. Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost formed the third row ahead of René Arnoux and Nelson Piquet . The reigning world champion Niki Lauda qualified for ninth place on the grid next to Derek Warwick .
run
While Alboreto had to defend himself against Mansell in the first corner, Rosberg pulled past him and took the lead. Mansell's attempt to overtake failed. He got off the track and had to give up the race shortly afterwards due to excessive damage. From then on, Alboreto had slight handling problems as a result of contact with Mansell.
When Rosberg retired on lap ten due to a turbocharger failure, Alboreto took the lead. Prost had meanwhile come second. Senna followed before Lauda, until the Austrian overtook the Brazilian in the 14th round.
In lap 19, Prost relegated Alboreto to second place. After Lauda was eliminated in the 24th lap, the two Lotus drivers Senna and de Angelis followed in third and fourth. Senna did not reach the destination due to an electrical fault. In the end, de Angelis was third ahead of Arnoux, Tambay and Laffite.
