Reports
background
The only change compared to the Austrian Grand Prix , which had taken place the previous weekend, was the fact that Tyrrell from now on equipped both drivers with the 014 , which had a Renault turbo engine.
Andrea de Cesaris , who had been dismissed from his team boss Guy Ligier after his accident at the Österreichring , was allowed to compete for the team one last time.
training
Nelson Piquet qualified for pole position on Friday ahead of Keke Rosberg , Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna . Teo Fabi and Patrick Tambay formed the third row ahead of Nigel Mansell and Thierry Boutsen .
The two Ferrari drivers only achieved positions 16 and 17.
Since it was raining during the second qualifying session on Saturday and therefore none of the drivers could beat their respective best times on Friday, this order remained the same.
run
Patrick Tambay had to start out of the pit lane due to a puncture during the drive to the starting grid.
Although both Piquet and Boutsen stalled their engines at the start, there was no rear-end collision. Rosberg took the lead in front of Senna, Fabi and Prost. The Frenchman passed Fabi on the second lap. His team mate Niki Lauda followed him three laps later and thus took fourth place.
Due to the technical failure of Rosberg, Prost, who had previously overtaken Senna, took the lead on the 20th lap. Meanwhile, Lauda fell back to eighth place due to a pit stop, but fought his way back to third place within seven laps. For his part, he now benefited from the fact that both Michele Alboreto and Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost headed for their pits and took the lead when Prost's stop was delayed due to a tire problem. On the 48th lap, Prost managed to get past Senna back into second place.
During the final laps, the leader, Lauda, was only a few tenths of a second apart from his team-mate Prost, who led the world championship standings. The two McLaren crossed the finish line 0.232 seconds apart. Ayrton Senna finished third just ahead of Michele Alboreto after their cars had touched in the duel for the podium on the last lap. Elio de Angelis and Nigel Mansell finished fifth and sixth.
