The 1970 Dutch Grand Prix took place on June 21 at Circuit Park Zandvoort and was the fifth race of the 1970 World Cup .
Reports
background
At McLaren , Peter Gethin replaced the injured Denis Hulme .
In Ken Tyrrell's March customer team , François Cevert joined Jackie Stewart's team for the first time .
At Lotus it was assumed that the new Type 72, after initial problems when it was first used in Spain, was now mature enough to be competitive in the race. Both factory drivers then competed with the new vehicle.
Clay Regazzoni started his Formula 1 career at Ferrari this weekend .
The Bellasi team of the Swiss team founder and driver Silvio Moser was also present for the first time .
training
During the training sessions, two major accidents were caused by Jack Brabham and Pedro Rodríguez , who overturned their vehicles. Both were unharmed.
Jochen Rindt secured pole position in front of Jackie Stewart and Jacky Ickx . Chris Amon and Jackie Oliver formed the second row in the starting line-up that was then still based on the 3-2-3-2 scheme.
run
The start of the race was brought forward by a few hours in order to achieve a time delay to the final of the 1970 Soccer World Cup in Mexico City, which took place on the same day .
Chris Amon initially stopped at the start with clutch problems. All drivers starting behind him passed him without collisions, but with a short delay. In this way, the pilots who started in front of and next to Amon were able to pull out a small lead. After this mess, there were numerous overtaking maneuvers in the first few laps.
The debutant Regazzoni, who overtook three colleagues within a few laps, caught the eye. Shortly after Piers Courage overtook John Miles and was therefore in seventh place, he had an accident on lap 23. His De Tomaso Ford collided with a post, rolled over and caught fire. Courage died at the scene of the accident. It took some time before the fire brigade could extinguish the burning magnesium chassis.
Nevertheless, the race continued without interruption. Rindt did not give up his lead until the finish line and thus achieved his first victory with the future success model Lotus 72. Jacky Ickx lost second place to Jackie Stewart due to a flat tire and the resulting tire change in the pits.
Regazzoni also passed Ickx at first, but he overtook him again as the race progressed and thus secured third place.
