The 1961 Dutch Grand Prix took place on May 22, 1961 at Circuit Park Zandvoort near Zandvoort and was the second race of the 1961 World Cup .
Reports
background
While Scuderia Ferrari kept their driver pairing compared to the previous race, Lotus Innes Ireland was replaced by Trevor Taylor . This driver change was necessary because Ireland had been injured at the Monaco Grand Prix just a week earlier. For Taylor it was the only 1961 Grand Prix that he drove for Lotus. In the 1962 automobile world championship he was then a regular driver for this team, Ireland returned to Lotus in the next race of the season. Once again, Lotus used two different cars, Taylor drove the old Lotus 18 , team-mate Jim Clark the new Lotus 21 . Porsche used two Porsche 787s for Jo Bonnier and Dan Gurney . This was the last season the car was out of the season, and from the next race onwards, the Porsche 718 was used by all drivers .
Again various teams took part in the race with private cars. The Ecurie Maarsbergen had two Porsche 718 for Carel Godin de Beaufort and Hans Herrmann reported. For de Beaufort it was the first race of the season, Herrmann drove for this team for the only time in his career. As in the previous race, Stirling Moss was registered for the Rob Walker Racing Team with both a Lotus 18 and a Cooper T53 . He used the lotus for training and racing. John Surtees continued to drive for the Yeoman Credit Racing Team using a Cooper T53. Camoradi International drove for the first time with two cars, a Cooper T53 for Masten Gregory and a Lotus 18 for Ian Burgess . For Burgess this was the first race for the team and in a Lotus. In the drivers 'championship, Moss was ahead of the two Ferrari drivers, Richie Ginther and Phil Hill , and in the constructors' championship, Lotus was in first place, three points ahead of Ferrari. With Jack Brabham , Moss and Bonnier, three former winners were registered for the Grand Prix. Cooper and BRM had previously each won once, Ferrari twice.
training
The training was dominated by Ferrari, who secured the first three starting positions on the grid. Phil Hill and Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips drove the same time, Phil Hill was awarded the pole position . This was Phil Hill's first pole position of the season and the start of a series of first places on the grid that lasted until the 1961 German Grand Prix . Ginther finished third in practice and was two tenths of a second slower than his teammates. Moss finished fourth on the grid ahead of Graham Hill on BRM. The gaps between the drivers and teams in midfield were small, followed by two other designers, Gurney on Porsche and Brabham on Cooper. Tony Brooks on BRM qualified eighth ahead of Surtees and Clark. The other placements were Bonnier, Herrmann, McLaren, Taylor and Beaufort. Burgess and Gregory did not drive any time in practice and then did not take part in the race.
run
Graf Berghe von Trips won the starting duel ahead of Graham Hill and Phil Hill. He finished the first lap in first place and thus became the first German driver to lead a race in the automobile world championship. On the first lap of the race, Graham Hill fell behind Phil Hill and Clark, who quickly improved by several positions. In the following laps of the race, Clark attacked Phil Hill, who was second, and overtook him several times. Phil Hill countered each time and kept second place. Behind them Graham Hill, Moss and Ginther dueled for fourth place, Ginther stayed in front of his two opponents for most of the time.
The race was mainly characterized by the high reliability of the cars. For the first time in the history of the automobile world championship, all vehicles that had started crossed the finish line. In addition, not a single pit stop was necessary. All drivers drove through the race without stopping in the pit lane. This situation occurred for several decades no longer, only at the Italian Grand Prix in 2005 again achieved all started car the goal.
The 1961 Dutch Grand Prix also demonstrated the superiority of the Ferrari 156. Graf Berghe von Trips led every lap of the race, his team-mate Phil Hill prevailed against Clark and two Ferrari drivers took the first two places. For Graf Berghe von Trips it was the first victory of his career and therefore the first for a German driver. For Ferrari began a winning streak of four races in a row, which lasted until the Grand Prix of Great Britain in 1961 . There was a gap of less than a second between Graf Berghe von Trips and Phil Hill, and the duel between the two drivers also became the battle for the drivers' world championship in 1961. Clark finished third, 13 seconds behind, while Moss finished fourth after Ginther made a driving mistake on the last lap of the race and Moss overtook him. Brabham finished sixth, Surtees narrowly missed the points. With Graham Hill and Brooks, BRM finished eighth and ninth, followed by the two Porsche works drivers. Clark drove the fastest lap of the race, the first of his career.
After the Grand Prix, both Moss and Graf Berghe von Trips led the drivers' standings with 12 points each. Count Berghe von Trips became the first German to lead the drivers' standings, something that a German driver, Michael Schumacher , did not succeed again until the 1994 Brazilian Grand Prix . Phil Hill stayed in third place in the drivers' championship ahead of Ginther and Clark. In the constructors' championship, Ferrari took the lead from Lotus. Porsche and Cooper were tied in third place.
Graf Berghe von Trips won the first of two races with the Dutch Grand Prix, another Grand Prix victory followed later in the season. Due to his fatal accident at the Italian Grand Prix in 1961, it was his only victory at this Grand Prix. Ferrari only won a Dutch Grand Prix again 10 years later.
