Reports
background
Three weeks after Lorenzo Bandini's death in Monaco , Formula 1 started the next World Championship round in the Netherlands. Mike Parkes , signed by Ferrari as Bandini's successor, had meanwhile won a Formula 1 race in Italy that was not part of the world championship. His teammate Ludovico Scarfiotti had completed a double victory, which was, however, favored by the fact that most of the usual competitors did not take part because they were taking part in the Indianapolis 500 at the same time . There, Dan Gurney qualified for the front row. Ultimately, however, Denis Hulme was the only one of the participating Formula 1 drivers who reached the finish line in the race, which had been postponed by three days due to rain. He finished fourth. Due to the postponement, the drivers only arrived at the first free practice session in Zandvoort at relatively short notice.
Long awaited with anticipation, the new Lotus 49 and the new Ford Cosworth DFV 3.0 V8 engine premiered this weekend , while the other works teams Ferrari, BRM and Eagle continued to use modified models from the previous year.
Under the direction of the private team Reg Parnell Racing , the last Grand Prix outing of the Lotus 25 , with which Jim Clark won the 1963 World Championship, took place this weekend .
training
The new Lotus proved to be competitive straight away, which Graham Hill proved by taking pole position. He undercut Dan Gurney's fastest lap time by half a second and Jack Brabham's by a full second. The second row of the grid was formed by the two Cooper works drivers Jochen Rindt and Pedro Rodríguez . This was followed by John Surtees , Denny Hulme and Jim Clark in the third row.
run
When the race was cleared, one of the officials was still in the area of the starting grid. This prevented Hulme from getting off to a good start. Hill took the lead ahead of Brabham and Gurney. At the end of the first lap he was already two seconds ahead of Brabham and now third-placed Rindt and Gurney in fourth place. Due to an engine problem and a resulting pit stop, Gurney dropped out of the leading group. Meanwhile, Clark overtook Chris Amon's Ferrari and, in turn, came under pressure from Hulme.
Brabham took the lead on lap 11 after Hills Lotus suddenly slowed down and eventually eliminated. Clark fought his way past Rindt on lap 15 and took the lead in the following lap, which he did not relinquish until the finish line.
Jim Clark won with the new Ford-motorized Lotus ahead of the favored Brabham-Repco of the team founder and reigning world champion Jack Brabham and Denis Hulme, who leads the world championship.
