Reports
background
Since the entry list for the Dutch Grand Prix with 34 pilots was as extensive as it was six weeks earlier in Great Britain , the organizers decided to conduct a pre-qualification based on the British Grand Prix model. This was intended to reduce the number of vehicles that were allowed to participate in regular training in advance. However, after Arturo Merzario , who would have belonged to the group of pre-qualifiers, was able to use the rules to prove that this was not compliant, the organizers reversed their decision and let all 34 drivers take part in the training units on Friday and Saturday.
The Renault works team, which had canceled the German and Austrian Grand Prix in favor of test drives to further develop the turbo-powered car, competed again, as did RAM Racing , where two local guest starters came into action this weekend, including Formula 1 - Newcomer Michael Bleekemolen . Riccardo Patrese returned to the Shadow factory team after disagreements between his sponsor and the team were resolved. Arturo Merzario, who had represented his compatriot in Austria, had to start again with his private team.
Brian Henton was invited by the Dutch team HB Bewaking Alarmsystems to pilot the Boro 001 instead of his private March 761 . He accepted the offer.
The March factory team brought a copy of the new 771 car to the racetrack for the first time . The vehicle was piloted by Ian Scheckter while Alex Ribeiro continued to drive the conventional 761B.
training
Mario Andretti secured his fifth pole position of the year ahead of Jacques Laffite and last year's World Cup opponents, Niki Lauda and James Hunt . This was followed by Carlos Reutemann alongside Gunnar Nilsson in the third row.
Jody Scheckter , who at this point had the best chances of winning the World Championship alongside Lauda and Andretti, only finished 15th.
run
Hunt and Andretti reached the first corner called Tarzanbocht almost simultaneously after the start, which was then as now in the form of an extensive hairpin curve . Hunt was on the inside while Andretti had to take his foot off the gas to avoid getting out onto the strip of grass. The beneficiary of this duel was Laffite, who took advantage of Andretti's lack of momentum to pull past him. Further down the field, Watson damaged his car on a curb and Jochen Mass collided with Alan Jones . Mass was eliminated, Jones could continue.
On the third lap, Andretti got past Laffite back to second place. Three laps later he had caught up with the leading Hunt and tried to repeat the maneuver of the first lap in the Tarzanbocht. He was back on the outside lane, but this time he didn't take his foot off the gas. The two cars collided at the exit of the curve and Andretti spun, but was able to continue the race in fourth position behind Laffite, Lauda and Reutemann. Hunt drove his damaged car to the pits, where it was found that it could not be repaired.
Up to the 15th lap, Andretti dueled Reutemann for third place. Then he retired due to an engine failure. In the 20th lap, Lauda took the lead from Laffite and from then on defended it until the finish.
By the 34th lap, Nilsson had caught up with Reutemann. In the duel for third place, the two collided. Nilsson retired, Reutemann was able to continue the race in 14th place. As a result, Patrick Tambay achieved a podium position in the customer ensign of the young Theodore team. However, lack of fuel on the penultimate lap prevented the small sensation and third place ultimately went to Jody Scheckter. Emerson Fittipaldi reached fourth place ahead of Tambay, who was still fifth despite his failure due to the number of laps completed, and Reutemann, who was able to make up eight places after the collision.
