Jean-Pierre Jabouille (born October 1, 1942 in Paris ) is a former French racing driver . He competed in the automobile world championship from 1975 to 1981 and scored two victories.
Career
Jean-Pierre Jabouille began his career in 1965 with hill climbs, but soon with the help of his mechanic and later brother- Jacques Laffite in the French Formula 3 , where he on a customer Brabham and later on Matra soon made an impression and in 1968, 1969 and 1971 each won the runner-up. On Matra he also drove in Formula 2 , where he became European Champion in 1976 , as well as for the Matra sports car team.
Jabouille made his first attempt in Formula 1 at the 1974 French Grand Prix in Dijon when he was registered for the underfunded British team Frank Williams Racing Cars . Williams used self-developed vehicles under the designation Iso-Marlboro FW01 , which were technically not fully developed. Jabouille was overwhelmed with this racing car; he clearly missed qualification by 0.7 seconds.
Jabouille made his racing debut in Formula 1 a year later on the Circuit Paul Ricard . This time he drove for the better equipped Tyrrell team , which fielded a third car for Jabouille alongside regular drivers Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler . Jabouille finished 12th here.
1977 began the phase of his career that would make him widely known: He was hired as a test driver and test driver for Renault's new Formula 1 racing team . Renault dared to do the unthinkable at the time and used a 1.5-liter V6 engine with turbocharging . Under the mockery of the competition ("teapot"), the premiere year was disappointing with countless defects in the engine area, but the first points were scored the following year and the breakthrough finally came in 1979 when Jabouille won the French Grand Prix in Dijon. He was able to repeat this success in 1980 at the Austrian Grand Prix , and in both years he took pole position a total of six times.
The excellent test driver Jabouille had turned the Renault into a front-runner , but the rocket-like speed of the Renault Turbo had its downside in many defects that cost Jabouille numerous top positions. At the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal in October 1980, Jabouille suffered such complicated broken legs in a serious accident that his Formula 1 career was de facto over. Although he attempted a comeback on Ligier- Talbot in 1981, he had to give up this commitment after just three races. After a brief stint in the Ligier management team, he turned his back on the sport and opened a restaurant in Paris .
In 1984 Jean-Pierre Jabouille made a comeback as a racing driver for Peugeot in the French touring car championship. He was to remain loyal to this brand in the following years, first as a racing driver in 1992 and 1993 at Le Mans and then as Head of Peugeot Sports. In this role he led Peugeot into Formula 1 as McLaren's engine partner , but was relieved of his position in 1996 after two weak seasons. He then built his own sports car team JB-Racing. In 2005, Jabouille competed alongside Alain Prost in races for the French GT series.
