Monza 480 km race in 1990
The 29th 1000 km race in Monza , also FIA WSPC - Trofeo Caracciolo, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 29, 1990 over a distance of 480 kilometers at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the second race of the sports car world championship this year.
The race
The Mercedes-Benz C11 , the new race car from Sauber Motorsport for the sports car world championship, made its racing debut in Monza. The C11 was a further development of the C9 and was powered by the tried and tested biturbo-charged five-liter V8 Mercedes-Benz M119HL . For the first time since the W 196 of 1955, when Mercedes withdrew from motorsport , a racing car was officially named Mercedes-Benz again.
On the day of the race, an exciting three-way battle developed between the two Mercedes-Benz cars owned by Mauro Baldi / Jean-Louis Schlesser and Jochen Mass / Karl Wendlinger against the Jaguar XJR-11 owned by Martin Brundle and Alain Ferté , the Baldi and Schlesser after a driving time of almost two Hours won with a lead of eight seconds over the teammates. Another 20 seconds behind the Brundle / Ferté Jaguar came in third overall.
