Monza 1000 km race in 1968

The Porsche 908 made its racing debut in Monza

The seventh 1000 km race of Monza , also 1000 km di Monza, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 25, 1968 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the fourth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

To the chagrin of the audience, the 1968 Monza racing event had to do without an Italian works team. After a change in the regulations, Scuderia Ferrari did not have an adequate emergency vehicle and decided not to participate in the world championship. Alfa Romeo had reported three Alfa Romeo T33 / 2s through the Autodelta works team , but they did not show up for training and races.

It was driven on the 10.100 km long route including the steep curves. The fastest in training was Jacky Ickx in the John Wyer - Ford GT40 , who needed 2: 57,000 minutes for his best time. This corresponded to an average of 205.424 km / h. In the race there was a long duel between the Ford from Ickx and Brian Redman and the Porsche 908 Langheck from Jo Siffert and Hans Herrmann . The 908 made its racing debut in Monza and the two drivers had to go to the pits several times over the course of the 1000 kilometers due to technical problems and only finished 19th in the overall standings, 27 laps behind the winners. Ickx and Redman didn't get in at all, as the exhaust hit after a spin and the team had to give up. The victory nevertheless went to the Wyer team. Paul Hawkins and David Hobbs won with a lead of almost two minutes on the Porsche LH 2.2 of Rolf Stommelen and Jochen Neerpasch .
