Giancarlo Baghetti (born December 25, 1934 in Milan ; † November 27, 1995 there ) was an Italian racing driver who was the only driver to make his Formula 1 debut, the 1961 French Grand Prix . However, it was his only victory.
Beginnings in motorsport
Giancarlo Baghetti was the eldest son of a family of industrialists in Milan. After the war he attended high school and was later to take over his father's work. He got access to motorsport at an early age. As a child, he had a miniature car with a 750cc engine. At 14, he got a Lambretta with which he as a teenager in a mountain race won the class of scooter.
In 1956 Baghetti drove his first circuit race in an Alfa Romeo 1900 TI. The following year he competed in hill climbs in an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint in the 1300 GT class. In 1958 he won two international mountain tests and took second place in the 1300s at the Mille Miglia , which was held that year as a rally with special tests. In 1959 he bought a Fiat Abarth with a 700 cc engine, which he successfully used in two international races in Montlhéry, whereupon Carlo Abarth took him to his team for record drives in Monza .
From 1960, Baghetti drove in Formula Junior and won twice in Monza (March 27 and April 25, 1960), each just ahead of the Italian Formula Junior elite at the time.
At the end of the 1960 season, the FISA (Federazione Italiana Scuderie Automobilistiche) - an association of Italian racing teams (the name being identical to the international automobile association was purely coincidental) - and Ferrari agreed to give a young Italian the chance to advance to Formula 1 in 1961 . Ferrari made the revised 1960s cars available to FISA, which Giancarlo Baghetti chose to drive.
Career in formula, sports and touring cars
Baghetti won his first Formula 1 race with the Ferrari 156 used by FISA , the Gran Premio di Siracusa , which was not part of the world championship , on April 25, 1961 ahead of Dan Gurney in a Porsche 718 . Eleven weeks later, on July 2, 1961, he won the French Grand Prix . His best results in the 1962 season were fourth at the Dutch Grand Prix and fifth at the Italian Grand Prix . Baghetti drove a total of seven races in his first two Formula 1 seasons, crossed the finish line four times and achieved a total of 14 championship points.
Before his Formula 1 debut, Baghetti already started as a works driver for Ferrari in the 12-hour race. At the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring in 1961, he and Willy Mairesse drove a Ferrari 250 GT to fifth place in the overall classification; In 1962 he was Lorenzo Bandini's partner - also on a Ferrari .
His other appearances in Formula 1 were less successful. In 1963 he competed five times for the ATS team (Automobili Tourismo Sport) , in 1964 six times for BRM and Scuderia Centro Sud and in the following three years he completed one race each at the Italian Grand Prix for Brabham , Reg Parnell Racing and Lotus . He was only able to finish six of 14 races he had started. He did not achieve any further World Cup points.
In the years that followed, Baghetti competed in the European Touring Car Championship with Alfa Romeo and Fiat Abarth . He then switched to Formula 2 and ended his racing career there after a serious accident at a race in Monza in 1968.
He later worked as a journalist and photographer in the fields of motorsport and fashion.
