Reports
background
As in most previous years, the Grand Prix took place from Germany in the 1967 season on the approximately 22.8 km long Nordschleife of Nurburgring, instead, by far the longest stretch of the race calendar.
In order to reduce the speed of the cars in the area of the pits for safety reasons, the so-called Hohenrain chicane was built into the track in front of the home straight. Nevertheless, given the rapid development of Formula 1 racing cars over the past twelve months, hardly anyone expected longer lap times than in the previous year.
Since only 15 laps had to be completed due to the length of the track, the field was increased by a few Formula 2 participants, as in the previous year , in order to offer the spectators more entertainment. These included Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver, two aspiring young drivers who became well-known Formula 1 drivers in the years that followed.
Hubert Hahne made a guest start this weekend in a Lola BMW , which despite its two-liter engine was not registered for Formula 2 but for Formula 1 and was theoretically eligible for points.
For the first time, German television broadcast a Formula 1 race in color.
training
Jim Clark drove the fastest training lap, more than nine seconds faster than second-placed Denis Hulme . Clark undercut his own pole time of the previous year by more than twelve seconds, despite the added braking chicane.
Graham Hill had an accident in the Fuchsröhre section during the final training session. With a locking wheel he went off the track and damaged his Lotus considerably. Hill got out of the car unharmed.
Guy Ligier had a serious accident in the Hatzenbach section during Friday practice. He went off the track and overturned. He suffered a broken ankle and a knee injury.
Jacky Ickx caused a sensation when he achieved the third-best training time with his Formula 2 car. However, since the Formula 2 participants were placed behind the Formula 1 cars on the grid, he was only assigned 18th place on the grid. Instead, the fourth-fastest Jackie Stewart got third on the front row alongside Clark and Hulme and fifth-fastest Dan Gurney .
Bruce McLaren , John Surtees and Jack Brabham formed the second row .
run
Jim Clark immediately took the lead. His team-mate Graham Hill , who only started the race from 13th on the grid after his training accident, got onto the grass next to the track, spun and fell back to the end of the field.
For three laps, Clark led the race ahead of Hulme and Gurney, before slowing down significantly due to a damage to the suspension and finally having to retire. Gurney then took the lead in front of Hulme and Brabham. Behind fourth-placed Stewart, Jacky Ickx, who had fought his way up to fifth position in his Formula 2 car, impressed again. After Stewart retired due to a gearbox failure, he was even briefly in fourth place before Chris Amon overtook him. A suspension damage to Ickx's car in the twelfth lap ultimately prevented an even greater sensation.
When Gurney retired two laps before the end due to a broken drive shaft, the way was clear for the second win of the season for world championship leader Denis Hulme. Behind them, Brabham crossed the finish line just half a second ahead of Amon.
Formula 2 driver Jackie Oliver came in fifth. However, since he was not entitled to points, Joakim Bonnier and Guy Ligier moved up in the ranking.
For the first time since the 1961 Italian Grand Prix , there was no British driver on the podium.
