Grand Prix of Germany 1927
The 2nd German Grand Prix was a sports car race and took place on July 17, 1927 on the Nürburgring, consisting of the north and south loops. It led over 18 laps of 28.3 km each, which corresponds to a total distance of 509.4 km.
The race
After the opening with the first Eifel race on June 18, 1927, the second important race took place at the Nürburgring just under a month later. After the first German Grand Prix, which was held on the AVUS in 1926 , the race found a permanent home on the Nürburgring from 1927. The competition for sports cars had two main reasons. Firstly, the organizers hoped for a larger field of participants, as the monoposto scene suffered from a lack of participants, and secondly, the now most important German car maker, Daimler-Benz, did not have a monoposto racing car. Daimler-Benz was founded in 1926 from the merger of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft with Benz & Cie. originated and relied on the development of sports cars.
At the Nürburgring, the Mercedes-Benz Type S with a 7-liter six-cylinder engine, overhead camshaft with vertical shaft drive and Roots fan were unrivaled. Otto Merz won the race ahead of his team-mate Christian Werner , who fought a tough duel after Rudolf Caracciola , who was leading at the beginning of the race , failed. Eliška Junková , better known as Elisabeth Junek , who crossed the finish line fourth overall with her Bugatti , received particular respect .
