background
In the run-up to the race weekend, a meeting of the Formula 1 team bosses took place in Reilingen not far from Hockenheim. The ban on electronic driving aids planned by FISA was discussed. An agreement was reached to implement this. It was also decided to make refueling possible again during the races and to introduce new weight regulations. All of this should come into effect with the start of the 1994 season .
The only change in the entry list compared to the British Grand Prix , which had taken place two weeks earlier, was the fact that both Tyrrell pilots now competed with the new 021 .
training
Alain Prost and Damon Hill qualified again for the front row in their superior Williams FW15C . Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna formed the second row in front of the two Ligier pilots Mark Blundell and Martin Brundle . Riccardo Patrese , who completed his 250th Grand Prix this weekend, qualified for seventh place on the grid ahead of Aguri Suzuki and the two Ferrari F93A driven by Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi .
During the rainy warm-up on Sunday morning, Derek Warwick crashed into the rear of Luca Badoer's Lola T93 / 30 . His Footwork FA14 overturned and slid headlong through the gravel bed. Warwick was uninjured, although the airbox of his car and his helmet were partly sunk in the gravel.
run
Because of a bad start, Prost was overtaken by Hill and Schumacher after a few meters. When trying to overtake Prost, Senna spun in the first chicane and fell back to the end of the field. In the second chicane, Brundle spun. In order to avoid this, Prost skipped the chicane and thus gained a small time advantage, through which he caught up with Schumacher more quickly. In the sixth lap he passed this one. Shortly after overtaking his team-mate Hill on lap eight, he was given a stop-and-go penalty for skipping the chicane, which he completed in the pits during the following lap. He then returned to the track in fifth behind Hill, Schumacher, Blundell and Patrese. In the meantime, Senna had fought her way back up to seventh place.
On the penultimate lap a tire burst on the car of Hill, who was leading by a clear margin. While he was trying to reach the pits on three wheels, he was overtaken by Prost and Schumacher. In the chicane near the pit lane entrance, he turned and had to give up.
Prost won ahead of Schumacher, Blundell, Senna, Patrese and Berger, leading the world championship standings with a 27-point lead over Senna.
