Reports

background

Since Minardi pilot Fabrizio Barbazza failed to raise new funds for the team after a sponsorship contract had expired, he was replaced by Pierluigi Martini . For Barbazza, this meant the end of his Formula 1 career after only eight outings.

A first copy of the new type 021 was used at Tyrrell .

training

During a rainy practice session on Friday, Mark Blundell survived a high speed accident unharmed.

On Saturday, the two Williams pilots Alain Prost and Damon Hill qualified for the front row ahead of Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna in dry track conditions . Riccardo Patrese and Martin Brundle formed the third row in front of Johnny Herbert and Derek Warwick .

run

Racing scene: Jean Alesi starts to overtake Rubens Barrichello

Hill took the lead in front of the very well started Senna, who had passed Schumacher and Prost directly. However, both countered successfully during the following laps, so that the starting order of the first four was restored after ten laps. At about the same time, Gerhard Berger gave up the race in the pits on the grounds that his Ferrari F93A was not safe to drive.

After Luca Badoer suffered a serious accident in the Woodcote curve, the safety car was sent out onto the track. A few laps after the restart on lap 39, Hill had to give up due to an engine failure. As a result, Prost took the lead over Schumacher. Senna was in third place until shortly before the end of the race, but retired on the penultimate lap due to lack of fuel. However, due to the distance covered, he was classified fifth behind Prost, Schumacher, Patrese and Herbert. Warwick received the last championship point of the day in sixth place.
