Reports
background
The financially troubled Shadow team no longer competed. Instead, the field of participants for the British Grand Prix was increased by a car from the private RAM Racing team , which competed for the first time since the Dutch Grand Prix in 1977 . A Williams FW07 was used, which was driven by Rupert Keegan . The first-time private team Brands Hatch Racing reported another customer vehicle of this type for the Grand Prix debutante Desiré Wilson , who had won a race in the Aurora AFX series at the same location a few weeks earlier .
At Brabham , Ricardo Zunino was replaced by Héctor Rebaque , who was able to compete for a works team for the first time after two seasons with his own private team.
The Fittipaldi team brought a first copy of the new F8 model to the racetrack, which was piloted by team boss Emerson Fittipaldi , while Keke Rosberg continued to drive the conventional F7 .
training
The two Ligier regular drivers Didier Pironi and Jacques Laffite qualified for the front row in front of the two Williams drivers Alan Jones and Carlos Reutemann . Nelson Piquet shared the third row with Bruno Giacomelli .
For the teams Renault and Ferrari , the training was again unsatisfactory. The starting positions 13 and 16 or 19 and 23 were partly due to problems with the Michelin tires, which the two teams still used exclusively.
run
While the first three pilots on the grid were able to defend their positions in the first corner, Reutemann lost his fourth place to Piquet. The order of the first seven then only changed again on lap 17, when Giacomelli headed for the pit to have new tires fitted, which meant he had to give up his seventh place to Derek Daly .
On lap 19 Pironi had to slow down due to a puncture and also go to the pits. After a long pit stop, he returned to the track in last place and started a remarkable race to catch up, which brought him back to fifth place by the 54th lap.
When Laffite also had an accident on lap 31 as a result of a tire damage, Jones took over the top position with a comfortable lead over Piquet, Reutemann and Daly. In the 64th lap, Pironi, who placed fifth, was again the victim of a puncture. The number of three tire damages at Ligier within just one race was taken as an opportunity for more detailed investigations. Later it turned out that material damage to the rims was the cause.
Jones won ahead of Piquet, Reutemann and Daly. Jean-Pierre Jarier secured fifth place ahead of Alain Prost .
