background

After the Canadian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 36 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and with 44 points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 56 points ahead of Ferrari and 67 points ahead of Mercedes .

At the British Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

With Alonso, Mark Webber (twice each), Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Vettel (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Paolo Longoni (ITA), Nigel Mansell (GBR), Ron McCabe (GBR) and Lars Österlind (SWE).

training

It rained in the first free practice. For this reason, eleven pilots did without a timed lap. Raikkonen did not even go on the track at all. Daniel Ricciardo achieved the fastest lap ahead of Nico Hülkenberg and Pastor Maldonado . Ricciardo was also the first driver to set a lap time after 75 minutes. Shortly before the end of training, Charles Pic damaged the front wing when it came into contact with the wall. Originally, James Rossiter was supposed to take over Force India from Adrian Sutil in this training . Due to the bad weather, the racing team decided not to use Rossiter and let Sutil drive in the car. In the second free practice session the track dried up, so the drivers switched to slicks. Nico Rosberg was the fastest pilot ahead of Webber and Vettel. Felipe Massa ended the training early after an accident in the Stowe . Massa was the only driver to fail a 107 percent time on Friday .

In the third free practice session the track was dry. Rosberg set the fastest time ahead of his teammates Hamilton and Vettel.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Hamilton posted the fastest lap. The Marussia and Caterham pilots as well as Esteban Gutiérrez and Valtteri Bottas were eliminated. In the second segment, Vettel was ahead. The McLaren drivers as well as Maldonado, Hülkenberg, Jean-Éric Vergne and Massa did not make it into the final section. In the final segment, Hamilton set the fastest time and achieved pole position in front of his teammates Rosberg and Vettel.

After qualifying, Paul di Resta , who had finished fifth, was excluded from the classification. The total weight of the vehicle including the driver was 1.5 kg too low. This was a violation of the sporting regulations Article 26.1 and the technical regulations Article 4.1. Di Resta was allowed to start the race from last place on the grid.

After the start, Lewis Hamilton led Vettel, followed by Rosberg. Webber got off to a bad start and damaged his front wing after contact with Romain Grosjean at Turn 1. On lap 7, Hamilton suffered a puncture on the left rear wheel and fell to last place when he fell back. On the eleventh lap, Massa also suffered a tire damage after moving up from eleventh to fifth on the first lap. Shortly afterwards, Vergne also had a puncture and the safety car was sent out to be cleaned. Vettel led the race until lap 42 when he suffered a gearbox failure and stopped near the start-finish line. This produced a second safety car. Rosberg, Webber and Alonso pitted and got new tires, Kimi Raikkonen stayed outside. The race was restarted on lap 46 with Rosberg in the lead. Webber and Alonso overtook Raikkonen. On the penultimate lap he was also overtaken by Hamilton. Nico Rosberg won his third Formula 1 race ahead of Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso .
