Reports

background

After the Singapore Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' championship with 60 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and 96 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship by 103 points over Ferrari and 110 points over Mercedes .

There were a few changes to the route compared to last year. The pit exit has been modified and now leads through the exit zone of the first corner. The green strips between the track and the run-off zone were asphalted everywhere. In addition, the curbs and the artificial turf were modified in some places. Since the pit exit has some bumps, it was criticized by the drivers at the beginning of the first practice session.

At the Korean Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

With Vettel (twice) and Alonso (once), all former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race commissioners were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Garry Connelly (AUS), Emanuele Pirro (ITA) and Sung Kuk Jang (KOR).

training

Hamilton set the fastest time in the first free practice, ahead of Vettel and Mark Webber's Red Bulls . James Calado took over Force India from Paul di Resta and Rodolfo González took over Marussia from Jules Bianchi . While the first three pilots set a time below 100 seconds, González stayed outside the 107 percent time . Several drivers attracted attention with slips and spins. Except for González, who lost his front wing in the process, and Kimi Räikkönen , who slipped into the pit wall at the end of training, they went without damage. The drivers only used the tire compound Medium. In the second free practice session, Hamilton stayed in the lead ahead of Vettel and his teammate Nico Rosberg . Hamilton was also the fastest pilot with a fully fueled vehicle. In the second free practice, both tire compounds were used. In the first free practice session, a difference of one second per lap between the tire compounds became apparent. The durability of the Supersoft mixture was estimated based on the training at ten to twelve laps.

In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time ahead of his team-mate Webber. Rosberg was third. Hamilton came in fourth after the fastest laps in the early practice sessions. At the beginning of the training he had shift problems and vibrations. The driving behavior of his vehicle improved by changing the brake pads.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Raikkonen was the fastest driver. The Marussia, Caterham and Williams pilots were eliminated. In the second segment, Vettel achieved the best time. The Toro Rosso , Force India and McLaren pilots were eliminated. In the final section, Vettel kept the lead and achieved pole position ahead of Hamilton and Webber. Because of three warnings from previous races, Webber was moved ten positions back.

It was the 208th pole position for engine manufacturer Renault . Renault thus moved into first position with Ferrari in the all-time list of the best.

run

Vettel won the race ahead of Raikkonen and Grosjean.

Vettel started from pole position, led the race consistently and drove the fastest race lap. With that he managed a Grand Slam . Vettel thus achieved two Grand Slams in two consecutive races, previously only Alberto Ascari in 1952 and Jim Clark in 1963.
