Jules Lucien André Bianchi (born August 3, 1989 in Nice ; † July 17, 2015 there ) was a French racing driver . One of his greatest successes was winning the championship title of the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2009. He also competed in the GP2 series in 2010 and 2011 and was third overall both times. In 2012 he was runner-up in Formula Renault 3.5 with Tech 1 Racing . In 2013 and 2014 he competed for Marussia in Formula 1 .

Bianchi was the grandson of Mauro Bianchi , a three-time world champion in the GT category, and great-nephew Lucien Bianchis , a former Formula 1 driver.

Career

From 2004 to 2006 Bianchi was active in karting . In 2007 he switched to the single-seater racing and was with five wins this season instant champion of the French Formula Renault . He also competed in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup for half a season .

Jules Bianchi at the Hockenheimring 2009 in a Formula 3 Euro Series vehicle

In 2008 Bianchi switched to the Formula 3 Euro Series and was signed by the ART Grand Prix championship team . While his teammate Nico Hülkenberg won the championship title, Bianchi won two races and was third in the overall standings at the end of the season. He was also the best rookie . He also won the Formula 3 Masters in Zolder . In 2009 Bianchi competed again for the ART Grand Prix in the Formula 3 Euroseries. He dominated his second season and won nine races. At Zandvoort , he managed a weekend with the best scoring points: He took pole position in qualifying , won both races and also achieved the fastest lap of each race. One race weekend before the end he secured the championship early. Bianchi also took part in a Formula Renault 3.5 race and made guest starts in the British Formula 3 championship .

In December 2009, Bianchi completed two Formula 1 test days for Scuderia Ferrari . In addition, he received a long-term sponsorship contract with Ferrari. For the second race weekend, he entered the GP2 Asia Series season 2009/2010 for ART Grand Prix and achieved a podium finish in third place in his first race. Since he remained without points in the other races, he finished twelfth overall at the end of the season. He also took part in the 2010 GP2 series for ART Grand Prix . In an accident on the Hungaroring in which he collided head-on with Ho-Pin Tung , he sustained a serious injury with a broken lumbar vertebra . After it initially looked like a longer break for Bianchi, he benefited from the four-week break until the next race and took part in the GP2 series again after an operation on the spine. Although he was at the front in a few races, he did not manage to win. As the best pilot without a win, he finished the season with three second places as the best results in third place overall. After the end of the season, he took part in two Formula 1 test days for Ferrari as part of the Young Driver Days .

In 2011, Bianchi stayed with ART, which was also supported by the automobile manufacturer Lotus from this season . First he started in the GP2 Asia series . Bianchi won the opening race and was runner-up behind Romain Grosjean . He then completed his second season in the GP2 series for ART . After finishing third in the first race, he stood out on the second race weekend at the Circuit de Catalunya with repeated mistakes. First he lost the pole position because he had ignored yellow flags, then he triggered a collision at the start with Giedo van der Garde in the sprint race , because of which he was moved five positions back on the starting grid on the following race weekend. In the main race of the fifth race weekend at Silverstone , Bianchi finally scored his first victory in the GP2 series. At the Nürburgring he led the sprint race over long distances and came home in second place after a brake . He finished the season with a total of six podium finishes in third place in the drivers' standings. In 2011 he also took on the position of test driver for the Ferrari Formula 1 team. In this role he was used on all three test days of the Young Driver Days .

Jules Bianchi during Formula 1 test drives for Ferrari

In 2012 Bianchi moved to Tech 1 Racing in Formula Renault 3.5. Bianchi won one race each at the Nürburgring, Silverstone and Le Castellet . At the last race of the season, Bianchi, who had started the race four points behind, collided with his opponent Robin Frijns , who had caused the collision. Frijns was given a time penalty, but this did not change the final rating. Bianchi expressed a lack of understanding about this decision after the season. With a total of eight podium finishes, Bianchi came second overall. He was also a substitute driver for the Formula 1 team Force India that season and took part in some free practice sessions there. His contract with Scuderia Ferrari remained in place and he also completed Formula 1 test drives and simulator work for Ferrari during the season.

Jules Bianchi at the 2013 German Grand Prix

For the Formula 1 World Championship 2013 , Bianchi first negotiated with Force India about a regular cockpit and carried out test drives for the racing team. Force India, however, preferred Adrian Sutil . Shortly after Bianchi received Marussia a Formula 1 cockpit for the season 2013. Bianchi was the third pilot, who has been confirmed by Marussia for this cockpit. Initially, Timo Glock and Luiz Razia had a contract for the cockpit. The contracts with both drivers were terminated due to financial difficulties of the racing team. On his debut in Australia , he was sometimes up to a second faster than his teammate Max Chilton in training . In the race, he finished in 15th place. Bianchi achieved his best result in the second race of the season, the Malaysian Grand Prix . There he reached the goal in 13th place. Bianchi finished his debut season in 19th place overall. He was the best pilot who didn't get any points.

Bianchi at the 2014 Singapore Grand Prix

In 2014 , Bianchi stayed with Marussia, who drove with Ferrari engines that season. He chose # 17 as a permanent starting number for his further career. At the Monaco Grand Prix , Bianchi finished ninth and thus scored both his first points and Marussia's first points in Formula 1. At the end of the season, he was 17th overall.

Accident and death

On October 5, 2014, Bianchi had a serious accident at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka . In the 43rd lap he came on wet roads off the track and crashed into the rear of a salvage vehicle that just the previous round of the track that has left Sauber of Adrian Sutil barg. The race was canceled. Bianchi received emergency medical care at the racetrack and then taken to the nearby University Mie Hospital, where he was operated on. On November 19, 2014, Bianchi's parents announced that their son was no longer in an artificial coma and could breathe independently. He was flown to his hometown of Nice. After nine months in a coma, he died on July 17, 2015 in the hospital in Nice as a result of his injuries sustained in the accident.

Bianchi is the first driver to die in a Formula 1 World Championship race since Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994 . As a token of respect and memory, the FIA decided not to reissue its start number 17 in the future.

As stated in his will , Bianchi's body was cremated after the funeral service and his ashes were then scattered as part of a burial at sea in the Mediterranean near Nice. In May 2016, Bianchi's family announced that they would take legal action against the FIA , Formula One Group and Manor Racing, Marussia's successor team.

In addition to Justin Wilson's fatal accident in 2015 in the IndyCar Series , Jules Bianchi's accident was one of the reasons why the FIA decided in July 2017 to introduce the Halo system for the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship .

Others

Bianchi's manager was Nicolas Todt , the son of Jean Todt .

In the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship , Bianchi planned to switch to Sauber before his serious accident. The contract with the racing team had already been signed before the accident but had not yet been announced.
