Daniel Juncadella Perez-Sala (born May 7, 1991 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish racing driver . He drove in the Formula 3 Euro Series from 2010 to 2012 and won the overall standings last season. In 2012 he also became the European Formula 3 champion . From 2013 to 2016 and 2018 he competed for Mercedes-Benz in the DTM , in 2019 he switched to Aston Martin .

Career

Beginnings in karting and formula racing (2004-2009)

Juncadella began his motorsport career in karting in 2004 , where he was active until 2006. In 2007 he switched to the single-seater racing and made his first experiences in the Formula Master Junior , where he immediately won the runner-up. He also competed in six German Formula BMW races and was 23rd in the overall standings.

In 2008, Juncadella was accepted into the Red Bull funding program and competed for the entire season in European Formula BMW, which emerged from the merger of the German and British Formula BMWs, for EuroInternational . The Spaniard won two races and was fourth overall. He also competed in six American Formula BMW races for the Euro Junior Team , one of which he won. He finished fourth at the Formula BMW World Finals.

In 2009 Juncadella stayed with EuroInternational in the European Formula BMW and won a race. At the end of the season he finished second in the overall standings behind his teammate Felipe Nasr , who had dominated the season and become champion. Although he won the runner-up title, Red Bull ended the collaboration with him.

Formula 3 Euro Series (2010–2012)

In 2010 Juncadella started for the Prema Powerteam in the Formula 3 Euro Series . After he had achieved the first pole position of the season, his first podium finish in the Formula 3 Euro Series followed with second place in the Sunday race at the Hockenheimring . After a weaker phase in the middle of the season, he regularly scored points towards the end of the season and won the season finale at the Hockenheimring. He finished eighth overall. He also started for Tech 1 Racing at five race weekends of the 2010 season of the newly founded GP3 series and at the end of the season finished in 14th place overall with a second place as the best result. He also made guest starts in the British Formula 3 championship .

Juncadella in Zandvoort 2011

In 2011 , Juncadella contested his second season in the Formula 3 Euro Series for the Prema Powerteam as a team-mate of Roberto Merhi . He started the season with two third places and one win on the first race weekend. Four more victories followed in the next races. While Merhi was champion with 406 points, Juncadella finished the season with 280 points in third. In addition, Juncadella also took part in the 2011 FIA Formula 3 Trophy . He won the Macau Grand Prix and was also third in this category, while Merhi took the title again.

In 2012 , Juncadella started again in the Formula 3 Euro Series for the Prema Powerteam. Juncadella won five races and won the championship with a total of eleven podium finishes. He also won in this season , the European Formula 3 Championship to the several races of the Formula 3 Euro Series included. In this, Juncadella also won five races. In addition, Juncadella won the Formula 3 Masters in Zandvoort .

DTM (since 2013)

Mücke Motorsport (2013-2015)

In 2013 , Juncadella started in the DTM in a Mercedes from Mücke Motorsport . In his debut race, he was twelfth. At the EuroSpeedway Lausitz he scored points for the first time with a sixth place. One race later at the Norisring , he improved one more time and finished fourth. He finished the season in 16th place overall and thus prevailed internally against Pascal Wehrlein .

In 2014 , Juncadella stayed with Mücke in the DTM. With a fourth place as the best result, he was 18th in the drivers' championship. In addition, Juncadella acted as a reserve driver for the Formula 1 racing team Force India . In this role he took part in Friday training sessions.

In 2015 Juncadella completed his third DTM season for Mücke Motorsport. He chose 12th as his starting number. With a fifth place as the best result, he reached 20th place in the overall ranking. He also drove for Rowe Racing in the Blancpain Endurance Series , where he finished seventh in the pro standings. Furthermore, Juncadella returned to formula racing in 2015 for three races . For Emilio de Villota Motorsport , he made two guest starts in the Euroformula Open , where he finished third and fourth. For Fortec Motorsport he competed in the Macau Grand Prix. After finishing second in qualifying, he damaged his car so badly in the qualifying race that he was unable to start the Grand Prix.

HWA (2016-2018)

For the 2016 DTM season , Juncadella switched to HWA within the Mercedes teams . With an eighth and ninth place, he finished the season in 24th place overall.

After he had no longer received an operational cockpit in the DTM for the 2017 season , he stepped back into the class of test driver from Mercedes. In addition, Juncadella competed in the Blancpain Endurance Series in 2017 . There he competed with Felix Serralles and Tristan Vautier , who was represented for a race by Renger van der Zande during the season . The team achieved a win of the season and Juncadella was tied with Serralles sixth in the drivers' championship.

For the season 2018 returned Juncadella in the DTM, where he competes again for HWA. In Nuremberg he achieved his first pole position on Sunday and also his first podium finish in the DTM in third place in the race. In Zandvoort he reached another pole position on Saturday. Unlike at the Norisring, this time he managed to hold onto first position and win the race. This made him the 37th driver and, after Miguel Molina, the second Spaniard to win at least one DTM race. In Spielberg on Saturday he took pole position for the third time this season, but fell out of the points in the race. He finished the season with 61 points as the worst Mercedes driver in 15th place overall.

After Mercedes left the DTM at the end of the 2018 season, Juncadella was hired as test and substitute driver for HWA for the FIA Formula E championship for the 2018/19 season .

R-Motorsport (since 2019)

For 2019 Juncadella received an operational cockpit at R-Motorsport , where he will drive one of four vehicles from DTM newcomer Aston Martin . After eight of 18 races, he finished 15th in the overall ranking with three points.

Personal

Daniel Juncadella comes from a Catalan family. His father Javier Juncadella , active in racing himself and successful as a rally and hill climb driver , was one of five children of the textile industrialist José Maria Juncadella and the well-known Spanish writer Mercedes Salisachs . His father's brother, José Juncadella , was also a racing driver, founder of the Escuderia Montjuich and held a leading position in the family empire. Mercedes, his father's sister, married Àlex Soler-Roig , who competed in Formula 1 in the early 1970s and is therefore his uncle. Another uncle is Luis Pérez-Sala , married to a sister of his mother's.

Juncadella speaks Spanish, English and German.
