Edoardo Mortara (born January 12, 1987 in Geneva , Switzerland ) is an Italian - French - Swiss racing driver .
Mortara has both Italian and French citizenship, but starts with an Italian or a Swiss license. In 2010 he won the Formula 3 Euro Series championship title . In 2009 and 2010 he won the Macau Grand Prix . He competed in the DTM from 2011 to 2018 . His best overall placement was second in 2016.
Career
Beginnings (2000-2006)
Like many other racing drivers, Mortara began his motorsport career in karting , which he practiced professionally from 2000 to 2005.
In 2006, Mortara started both in the Italian Formula Renault , in which he was fourth in the overall standings, and in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup , in which he was finally 22nd in the overall standings.
Formula 3 Euro Series and GP2 Series (2007-2010)
In 2007 he switched to the Formula 3 Euro Series , in which he competed for the French Signature Plus team. Mortara won one race each at Brands Hatch and at the Circuit de Catalunya . In the end, he finished eighth overall and was also the best newcomer.
In 2008 Mortara started again for Signature-Plus, which now drove as one of two teams with Volkswagen engines. Although he only won one race in Pau , Mortara was runner-up in the series behind Nico Hulkenberg . Mortara was the best driver who drove with Volkswagen engines.
At the beginning of 2009 Mortara was signed by Arden International for the current season of the GP2 Asia series as a replacement for Renger van der Zande . Mortara, who, like his former Formula 3 rival Hülkenberg, made his debut in the Sachir race, finished third in his first race and scored the first points for Arden. He ranks eleventh overall. In 2009 , Mortara competed in the European main series of GP2 together with Sergio Pérez for Arden International. Mortara started the new season with a good debut in Barcelona: after finishing sixth in the main race, he won the sprint race. Since he only occasionally scored points in the further course of the season, he finished 14th overall at the end of the season. In November he won the prestigious Macau Grand Prix . He also took part in some Formula Renault 3.5 races and made guest starts in the Formula 3 Euro Series.
In 2010 Mortara did not get a cockpit in the GP2 series and decided to return to the Formula 3 Euro Series. He started again for the Signature racing team equipped with Volkswagen engines. Mortara won seven races and only missed the podium once in the first eight races. Three races before the end of the season, he secured the championship title early. In November he again took part in the Macau Grand Prix for Signature . Mortara managed to repeat the win from the previous year. This made him the first pilot to defend victory and win the race that has been held since 1983 twice.
DTM (2011-2018)
Team Rosberg (2011-2013)
In 2011 Mortara left formula racing and switched to Team Rosberg in the DTM . There he became a teammate of Filipe Albuquerque . In his second race at Zandvoort , he scored his first DTM points in sixth place. One race later in Spielberg , Mortara qualified for fourth starting position. In the race, however, after a collision with Maro Engel at the start, he had no chance of points right after the start. He finished the race in 16th place. At Brands Hatch, Mortara finally achieved his first podium finish in third place. One race later in Oschersleben , he repeated this result. At the end of the season he was the best newcomer in ninth place in the championship. He also won a DTM show race in the Munich Olympic Stadium . After the end of the DTM season, Mortara successfully took part in two Asian races. First, together with Alexandre Imperatori and Darryl O'Young, he won the GTC class at the ILMC race in Zhuhai . A week later he dominated the GT Cup in Macau. It was his third victory on the Guia Circuit across all classes .
In 2012 Albuquerque and Mortara stayed with Team Rosberg in the DTM. His racing team used a current model that season, the Audi A5 DTM . He scored his first DTM victory in the fourth race in Spielberg. Three races later he also won at Zandvoort. Mortara finished the season in fifth place overall. In 2012 he was the only Audi driver to win a race. He also made two guest starts in the Audi R8 LMS Cup China , each of which he crossed the finish line first, and he again won the GT Cup in Macau. Mortara also took part in a Formula 1 test day for Lotus . He made his debut in the Formula 1 car.
In 2013 , Mortara - again at Albuquerque's side - contested his third DTM season for Team Rosberg. A ninth place was his best result. As the worst Audi driver, he achieved 21st place in the drivers' standings. Also this year he was the first to cross the finish line as a guest starter in the Chinese Audi R8 LMS Cup and won the GT Cup in Macau. He also took part in three races of the Rolex Sports Car Series and won the GT class once.
Team Abt Sportsline (2014-2016)
For the 2014 season Mortara moved within the Audi DTM Teams Abt and was teammate Adrien Tambay . In the second race of the season in Motorsport Arena Oschersleben , he finished third on the podium. With another podium placement, he improved to fifth place in the overall ranking compared to the previous year.
In 2015 Mortara competed again for Abt in the DTM. He chose 48 as his starting number. Tambay also stayed with Abt. He won a race in Spielberg and was on the podium in five other races. He finished fourth in the drivers' championship. He also drove two races in the Blancpain Endurance Series and won two of three races in the Chinese Audi R8 LMS Cup.
In the 2016 DTM season , Mortara competed for Abt again. With Mattias Ekström he got a new team-mate, who was replaced by Mike Rockenfeller on the last race weekend . He won the season opener in Hockenheim, Nuremberg , the Nürburgring , Mogyoród and the season finale in Hockenheim. With five wins, no other driver had won races like him. Nevertheless, he was narrowly defeated by Marco Wittmann in the overall standings with 202 to 206 points and came second overall.
HWA (2017-2018)
After six seasons at Audi, Mortara moved to Mercedes before the 2017 season , where he was given a cockpit at HWA . In Nuremberg he achieved his only podium finish of the season in third place and was 14th overall with 61 points.
In 2018 he stayed at HWA. At the Lausitzring , he was able to achieve his first DTM day win since he switched to Mercedes. In Nuremberg he scored his second win of the season on Saturday. In the Sunday race, he achieved his third podium of the season with second place. In Misano , he finished third in the Saturday race and third in the Sunday race two more times on the podium. At the end of the season, Mortara finished sixth in the drivers' championship.
FIA Formula E Championship (since 2017)
In parallel to his involvement in the DTM, Mortara competed for the Venturi Formula E Team in the FIA Formula E Championship in the 2017/18 season . In the second race of the Hong Kong E-Prix 2017 , he achieved his first podium finish in second place. At the Berlin E-Prix and at the New York City E-Prix he was represented by Tom Dillmann because of the racing weekends that took place at the same time at the Lausitzring and in Zandvoort . At the end of the season he finished 13th overall.
In 2018/19 Mortara finally switched to the FIA Formula E championship and thus left the DTM after eight years. He ran for Venturi. He took his first win at the Hong Kong E-Prix , and it was also the first win for the team. At the end of the season he finished 14th in the drivers' championship with another podium finish with 52 points.
