The 2019 Bern E-Prix (officially: Julius Baer Swiss E-Prix 2019 ) took place on June 22nd on the Bern Formula E race track in Bern and was the eleventh race of the 2018/19 FIA Formula E Championship . It was the first Bern E-Prix.

report

background

After the Berlin E-Prix , Jean-Éric Vergne led the drivers' standings with six points ahead of Lucas di Grassi and with 16 points ahead of André Lotterer . In the team standings, DS Techeetah was 25 points ahead of Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler and 51 points ahead of Virgin Racing .

Since the organizers of the race were planning to hold the race in various Swiss cities after the Zurich E-Prix 2018 was organized, the race was the first E-Prix in which the city name did not appear in the official name of the race.

At the end of January 2019, the parliamentary group from GFL / EPP requested in a motion in the Bern city parliament that the organizer Swiss E-Prix Operations AG should use green electricity for the race instead of the usual glycerine- powered diesel generators to charge the vehicles' batteries. Although the city council decided this way, Energie Wasser Bern did not receive a corresponding order by February 2019.

Two days before the race, a Critical Mass with around 1000 participants took place on the racetrack. This led to vandalism , with the demonstrators damaging several advertising banners attached to the route. As these had to be attached to the track boundary for contractual reasons, the organizer had to fly in new advertising banners from London the following night. In addition, according to media reports, power cables and cables for TV transmission were also cut. The damage to property is said to have amounted to up to 400,000 Swiss francs (the equivalent of around 360,000 euros), and the Formula E shakedown had to be postponed by around three hours. Mayor Alec von Graffenried told the media that the Bern municipal council was disappointed with the organizer. Not all of the conditions that were required for the approval of the race were met in full. This applied to ensuring public transport and the accessibility of the quarter.

Daniel Abt , Sébastien Buemi , di Grassi, António Félix da Costa and Stoffel Vandoorne received a so-called fan boost in the race ; after the 23rd minute of the race, they were allowed to increase the power of their vehicle to 240 kW to 250 kW and thus up to 100 kilojoules Use energy additionally. Buemi received his 37th Fanboost in the FIA Formula E Championship, di Grassi his 30th and Abt his 28th Félix da Costa and Vandoorne each received the additional energy for the eleventh time, each time this season.

training

In the first free practice, Vergne was fastest with a lap time of 1: 19.281 minutes ahead of Lotterer and di Grassi.

In the second free practice, Pascal Wehrlein set the fastest time in 1: 19.118 minutes, ahead of Lotterer and Vergne.

Qualifying

Qualifying started at 1.30 p.m. and took place in four groups of five or six drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 250 kW were allowed to drive. Mitch Evans was fastest with a lap time of 1: 18.897 minutes.

The six fastest drivers then drove in the first six positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Vergne secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 18.813 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Evans, Buemi, Wehrlein, Maximilian Günther and Sam Bird .

run

The race lasted 45 minutes plus one lap. Each driver had to activate the attack mode twice; after activation, the vehicle produced a maximum of 225 kW instead of 200 kW for a period of four minutes.

Vergne stayed in the lead at the start, behind Buemi Evans attacked. The vehicles touched, behind them Günther drove towards Wehrlein, who hit the TecPro barrier in the chicane and blocked the route. Robin Frijns spun further back in the field after touching it and hit the barrier. His vehicle was then against the direction of travel. The race management interrupted the race with the red flag .

Since not all vehicles had reached the first time measurement when the race was interrupted, the order for the restart was determined to be the original starting grid. Frijns was unable to participate in the restart because his vehicle was too badly damaged.

Evans put pressure on Vergne but couldn't get past. In the tenth lap, Bird passed Günther with the attack mode . D'Ambrosio received a drive-through penalty.

Wehrlein suddenly slowed down on lap 13 and parked his vehicle on the edge of the track. Evans attacked with activated attack mode Vergne, who defended himself and in turn activated attack mode . The race management announced a full course yellow in order to be able to recover the vehicle from Wehrlein. Vergne led before Evans, Buemi, Bird, Günther, Abt, Lotterer, Alex Lynn , Felipe Massa and Vandoorne.

The race was then released again, the positions did not change at the restart. Evans activated his second attack mode on lap 17 and attacked Vergne, who defended himself again and reactivated his attack mode one lap later . Lotterer also passed Abt with activated attack mode and one lap later passed Günther.

In the 25th round, Lotterer activated his second attack mode and caught up with Bird. He attacked the Virgin pilot, but the latter defended himself. One lap later , Bird braked himself, Lotterer passed without a fight. On the penultimate lap it started to rain, but there were no more changes in position.

Lotterer subsequently received a drive-through penalty, which was converted into a time penalty of 22 seconds for ignoring the red pit lights when the race was interrupted. José María López was disqualified because he had consumed more than the maximum allowed 200 kW of energy. Félix da Costa received a subsequent time penalty of five seconds for driving too fast during the full course yellow .

Vergne won the race ahead of Evans and Buemi. The remaining points were placed by Bird, Günther, Abt, Lynn, Massa, di Grassi and Vandoorne. The point for the fastest race lap in the top ten went to Bird.

In the overall standings, Vergne increased his lead over di Grassi and Evans was now third. DS Techeetah also increased its lead over Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler and Virgin Racing in the team standings.
