Jérôme D'Ambrosio (born December 27, 1985 in Etterbeek ) is a Belgian racing driver . In 2007 he won the first championship title of the International Formula Masters and started in the GP2 series between 2008 and 2010 . In 2011 and 2012 he took part in a total of 20 Formula 1 races. He has been competing in the FIA Formula E Championship since 2014 .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport

After several years in karting , where he won the World Cup in Formula A in 2002, joined D'Ambrosio 2003 in Formula racing . He initially drove in the Belgian Formula Renault 1.6. With Thierry Boutsen Racing he won the drivers' championship. In the same year he also drove in the Formula König and was fourth in the overall standings.

In 2004 D'Ambrosio was accepted into the Renault funding program. He started for Graff Racing in the French Formula Renault and finished fourth. In addition, he drove for Graff Racing in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and reached 15th place in the overall classification in this series. In 2005 D'Ambrosio competed for Euronova Racing in several racing series. He finished fourth in the Italian Formula Renault. In the winter series of this championship he reached third place. In the Eurocup he was 15th again. He also drove a race in the Italian Formula 3000 and competed in GT racing in the FIA GT Championship for Belgian Racing .

In 2006 D'Ambrosio started in Formula Renault 3.5 for Tech 1 Racing . After remaining without points for the first seven races, he left the series. He then returned to Euronova Racing and competed in the Euroseries 3000, the former Italian Formula 3000. With the exception of two races in which he was eliminated, he was always in the top 5. This enabled him to finish the season in fifth place in the drivers' standings despite his late entry. He also competed again for Belgian Racing in a race in the FIA GT Championship.

In 2007 D'Ambrosio drove in the newly founded International Formula Master for Cram Competition . He won five races, scored 100 points and became the first champion of this new racing series. He was 35 points ahead of second-placed Chris van der Drift .

GP2 series

In 2008 D'Ambrosio switched to the GP2 series and became a teammate of Kamui Kobayashi at DAMS . First he started in the first season of the GP2 Asia series . He achieved two podium finishes and finished eleventh overall. With 12 to 22 points he was internally defeated Kobayashi. Then he started for DAMS in the regular GP2 series. In the sprint race on the Valencia Street Circuit , he finished second. At the next sprint race in Spa-Francorchamps , D'Ambrosio led the race until the last lap when he was overtaken by Pastor Maldonado . In the end he came second again. At the end of the season , D'Ambrosio finished eleventh overall with 21 points. He prevailed against Kobayashi, who had scored ten points. He also contested two GT races for Scuderia Latorre in the International GT Open .

Jérôme D'Ambrosio in the 2009 GP2 series

Just like his teammate Kobayashi, D'Ambrosio also competed for DAMS in the 2008/2009 GP2 Asia series season and the 2009 GP2 series . After D'Ambrosio was in seventh place after five of six race weekends in the GP2 Asia series, he managed to jump to second place overall on the last race weekend in Sachir with a third and second place. In total, D'Ambrosio achieved four podium finishes, all of which he achieved in Sachir. He did not manage to win a race. Together with his team mate Kobayashi, who won the championship title, D'Ambrosio completed the good overall result for DAMS. In the regular GP2 series, D'Ambrosio was on the podium three times and finished the season in ninth place overall. He achieved all podium finishes within the first four races. D'Ambrosio won the internal duel against Kobayashi with 29 to 13 points. In the 2009 season, he was the driver with the most points who had not won a race. He also drove two races in Formula Le Mans for DAMS in 2009 , both of which he won.

For Virgin D'Ambrosio took part in the first free practice in Japan in 2010

In the 2010 Formula 1 season he was a test driver for the Renault team. During the season he also became a reserve driver for Virgin Racing and took part in the first free practice session on four Grand Prix weekends. He also competed in the 2010 GP2 series with his fellow Renault test driver Ho-Pin Tung for DAMS, who competed in the same colors as Renault . On the second race weekend at the Circuit de Monaco , he achieved his first GP2 victory in the sprint race. With his first win in the 44th race, he is one of the GP2 drivers who had to wait the longest for their first win. While D'Ambrosio only scored points in Monaco in the first half of the season and otherwise did not attract any attention, Romain Grosjean , who represented D'Ambrosio for a race, managed to achieve fast laps with the same car straight away. After his return, D'Ambrosio was regularly among the front runners and narrowly missed another win in his home race at Spa-Francorchamps. Starting from pole position , he had the best chance of victory before retiring with technical problems shortly before the end of the race. He finally finished the season in twelfth place overall.

formula 1

2011 D'Ambrosio made his debut for Virgin as a team-mate of Timo Glock in Formula 1. He finished his first race in Australia in 14th place. In the further course of the season he managed to repeat this result one more time. D'Ambrosio finished the season in 24th place in the world championship. He was one position ahead of Glock, who was 10: 9 ahead of him in the race duel and clearly won the duels in qualifying with 15: 4. Both drivers remained without points.

For the 2012 Formula 1 season , D'Ambrosio was replaced by Charles Pic . He switched to Lotus and took on the position of test and replacement driver. In this role he was used at the Italian Grand Prix , as regular driver Romain Grosjean was banned. With a 13th place he achieved his best result in Formula 1 to date. 2013 D'Ambrosio stayed as a test driver at Lotus.

Blancpain Endurance Series and FIA Formula E Championship

In 2014 D'Ambrosio initially started in GT racing and received a cockpit in the Blancpain Endurance Series at M-Sport Bentley . He finished the season in 17th place in the Pro Cup. In addition, D'Ambrosio competed in the newly founded FIA Formula E Championship for Dragon Racing in 2014/15 . In the first race, the Beijing ePrix , he finished sixth. At the Berlin ePrix , D'Ambrosio won Formula E for the first time. He benefited from Lucas di Grassi's disqualification . He finished both of the last two races in London in second place. D'Ambrosio finished fourth in the drivers' championship. In 2015/16 D'Ambrosio stayed with Dragon. At the third ePrix in Punta del Este , he took pole position and was third in the race. In Mexico City he won after a close duel with Sébastien Buemi in the race . As with his first Formula E victory, D'Ambrosio benefited from a disqualification di Grassis this time too. At the last race of the season, the London ePrix , he again reached the podium in third place. He finished the season in fifth place overall and prevailed with 83 to 60 points internally against his teammate Loïc Duval .

In the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship , D'Ambrosio competed again for Dragon. At the end of the season he finished 18th in the overall ranking.

D'Ambrosio stayed with Dragon in 2017/18 . With third place in Zurich , he celebrated his first podium result since the season finale 2015/16. At the end of the season he finished 14th in the drivers' championship.

In 2018/19 D'Ambrosio switched to Mahindra Racing .
