The Long Beach ePrix 2016 (officially: 2016 Faraday Future Long Beach ePrix ) took place on April 2nd at the Long Beach Grand Prix Circuit in Long Beach , USA and was the sixth race of the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship . It was the second Long Beach ePrix.

After the Mexico City ePrix , Sébastien Buemi led the drivers' standings with 22 points ahead of Lucas di Grassi and with 38 points ahead of Sam Bird . In the team standings, Renault e.dams was 34 points ahead of Dragon Racing and 44 points ahead of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport .

The number of laps increased compared to the previous year from 39 to 41 laps, the total distance therefore increased from 83.109 km to 87.371 km.

With Nelson Piquet junior , a former winner entered the race.

Jérôme D'Ambrosio , di Grassi and Nick Heidfeld received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. For D'Ambrosio it was the very first FanBoost , for di Grassi the third in a row and for Heidfeld the second in the season after the Putrajaya ePrix 2015 .

Buemi set the fastest time in the first free practice session in 0: 57.383 minutes ahead of Bird and Simona de Silvestro .

In the second free practice, Daniel Abt set the fastest time in 0: 56.778 minutes ahead of Buemi and di Grassi.

Qualifying

Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in two groups of four drivers each and two groups of five drivers each, each group had 10 minutes to set a fast lap. Bird set the fastest time in 0: 56.821 minutes. Loïc Duval spun on his fast lap and hit the lane.

The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . António Félix da Costa secured pole position with a lap time of 0: 57.198 minutes. However, he was disqualified because the tire pressure on his vehicle was too low. Bird thus achieved pole position and three points. The other positions were occupied by di Grassi, Stéphane Sarrazin and Nick Heidfeld .

Piquet was moved back ten starting positions because of an engine change. Since this was not completely possible from 15th place, he also received a ten-second penalty that he had to serve when changing vehicles.

The race lasted 41 laps.

At the start, the positions in the front part of the field remained unchanged, only Heidfeld had to fight off several attacks from Robin Frijns .

Heidfeld braked shortly afterwards, so that Frijns, Abt, Buemi and Nicolas Prost passed. On the eighth lap, Buemi overtook Abt and drove the fastest lap of the race several times in a row. On the twelfth lap he was within striking distance, but when approaching turn seven he ran into Frijns. Frijns spun and fell back to ninth place, but he and Buemi initially continued the race with their damaged vehicles. Buemi lost large parts of the front wing in the accident, Frijns lost the rear wing, and his rear wing was also damaged.

Meanwhile, there was a change in leadership at the top, di Grassi overtook Bird. Shortly afterwards, the race management showed both Frijns and Buemi the black flag with an orange dot , both pitted on lap 16 and changed their vehicle. On lap 18, the vehicles came into contact with an attack by Félix da Costa on Jean-Éric Vergne .

On lap 21, Vergne and Duval, the first drivers to come to the pits for their scheduled vehicle change, the minimum time for the change was 67 seconds. One lap later, all the other drivers changed their car except Heidfeld and Bruno Senna , who took the lead for one lap. With 66.9 seconds, Prost stayed just under the minimum time for the pit stop and shortly afterwards received a drive-through penalty, just like his team-mate Buemi for causing the collision with Frijns.

After the vehicle changes, di Grassi led before Bird, Sarrazin, Abt, Prost, Heidfeld, Senna, D'Ambrosio, Vergne and Félix da Costa. Bird braked himself on the lap after changing vehicle and slipped into the lane. He then continued the race, but fell back to seventh place. Buemi drove the fastest lap of the race at this point, in last place.

Félix da Costa and Vergne fought several laps for eighth place, in lap 28 Félix da Costa finally passed. Bird meanwhile had narrowed the gap on Senna and put him under pressure, but Senna successfully defended himself against the attacks.

Meanwhile, Prost took his drive-through penalty and fell back to 14th place. Dúran also received a drive-through penalty for using too much energy on his first vehicle. Piquet hit the barrier on lap 34 after going over the curbs in the first chicane . Félix da Costa meanwhile retired with a technical problem. After only yellow flags were initially shown, the race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue Piquet's car.

At this point, Di Grassi was leading ahead of Sarrazin, Abt, Heidfeld, Senna, Bird, D'Ambrosio, Vergne, Duval and de Silvestro. When restarting on lap 38, Heidfeld used his FanBoost , but didn't get close enough to Abt to attack him. Meanwhile Vergne fell back and was eliminated on the last lap.

Di Grassi won the race ahead of Sarrazin and Abt. For di Grassi it was the second win of the season, for Sarrazin and Abt the first podium finish in the FIA ​​Formula E Championship. The remaining points were placed by Heidfeld, Senna, Bird, D'Ambrosio, Duval, de Silvestro and Mike Conway . With de Silvestro, a woman scored points in Formula E for the first time, and it was also the first Top10 result for Conway. The two points for the fastest race lap went to Buemi.

With the victory Di Grassi took the lead in the overall standings ahead of Buemi and Bird. Renault e.dams stayed ahead in the team standings, while ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport took second place from Dragon Racing.
