The Mexico City ePrix 2016 (officially: 2016 FIA Formula E Mexico City ePrix ) took place on March 12th at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City , Mexico and was the fifth race of the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship . It was the first Mexico City ePrix and the first ePrix to be held on a permanent racetrack.

After the Buenos Aires ePrix , Sébastien Buemi led the drivers' standings with four points ahead of Lucas di Grassi and 28 points ahead of Sam Bird . In the team standings, Renault e.dams was 15 points ahead of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport and 39 points ahead of Dragon Racing .
Salvador Durán , di Grassi and Jean-Éric Vergne received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle once to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. For Durán it was the first FanBoost since the Monaco ePrix 2015 , for di Grassi the second and for Vergne the third in a row.

Buemi set the fastest time in 1: 03.995 minutes in the first free practice, ahead of Loïc Duval and Oliver Turvey . The training had to be interrupted once because Simona de Silvestro parked her vehicle on the track due to a problem with the battery management.
In the second free practice session, Buemi was again fastest with a lap time of 1: 03.341 minutes ahead of Daniel Abt and di Grassi.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in two groups of four drivers each and two groups of five drivers each, each group had 6 minutes to set a fast lap. Buemi set the fastest time in 1: 03.667 minutes. Bruno Senna spun on his fast lap and damaged his vehicle in the process. Nelson Piquet Jr. braked himself on his first timed lap and hit the track barrier, so qualifying was interrupted. Piquet was therefore unable to set a lap time.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Jérôme D'Ambrosio secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 03.705 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Nicolas Prost , di Grassi, Abt and Buemi, who made a driving error on his timed lap.
After qualifying, António Félix da Costa was moved back ten places on the grid because the battery and transmission on his vehicle had to be changed after qualifying and the parc fermé regulations were violated. In addition, he received a ten-second penalty.

The race went over 43 laps.
The positions at the front of the field remained unchanged at the start. When braking into the second chicane, Félix da Costa ran into Mike Conway , then Senna hit Félix da Costa, who then had to continue with a broken front wing attachment.
On the fourth lap, Buemi overtook Abt, who had previously missed a chicane, and was thus in fourth place.
Félix da Costa was shown the black and orange flag on the first lap because of the damage from the collision , after which he was given a drive-through penalty because he had gained an advantage by leaving the track. He had to go to the pits for repairs and shortly thereafter took his drive-through penalty, which threw him back to the end of the field. He was then with a lap deficit in 18th and last place.
At the front of the field were D'Ambrosio, Prost, di Grassi, Buemi and Abt within two seconds, Duval was in sixth place four seconds behind the leading group. Di Grassi passed Prost on the 22nd lap.
The two Mahindra drivers were the first to pit on lap 21 to change vehicles, all other drivers except the NEXTEV drivers came one lap later. Buemi overtook his team-mate Prost at the pit stop. When Prost was sent out of the box, Abt was driving in Fast Lane and had to brake to avoid a collision with Prost.
One lap after changing cars, di Grassi used his FanBoost to overtake D'Ambrosio on the start-finish straight. Buemi also put a lot of pressure on D'Ambrosio and attacked him several times, but he defended his position. Meanwhile, Di Grassi managed to break away from D'Ambrosio and Buemi.
On lap 29 Buemi and D'Ambrosio collided when braking for the first chicane, both skipped the chicane and were able to continue with their only slightly damaged vehicles. D'Ambrosio set the fastest lap of the race on this lap. In the battle for seventh place, Bird overtook Nick Heidfeld , who immediately countered and passed Bird again. However, Heidfeld had to save energy because he had changed vehicles earlier and shortly afterwards lost the position again to Bird.
Buemi then overtook D'Ambrosio on lap 35, but again skipped the first chicane. D'Ambrosio tried to pass Buemi again and subsequently lost two more positions to Prost and Abbot. D'Ambrosio skipped the last chicane and passed Prost and Abbot again. Then Buemi let him pass again to avoid a drive-through penalty. A drive-through penalty was imposed on Prost shortly afterwards, as the race stewards viewed the incident with Abt following the vehicle change as an unsafe release .
Meanwhile, Di Grassi continued to pull away from the front and increased his lead to ten seconds. Buemi was unable to overtake D'Ambrosio despite a number of attacks. On the penultimate lap, Abt hit the barrier after a driving error. He was able to continue the race but dropped from fourth place to eighth place.
Di Grassi won the race, but was subsequently disqualified because his vehicle fell below the minimum weight. Fourth-placed Duval was also punished retrospectively because he had gained an advantage by leaving the track, the 15-second penalty threw him back behind Prost.
D'Ambrosio inherited the victory ahead of Buemi and Prost. The remaining points were placed by Duval, Robin Frijns , Bird, Abt, Heidfeld, Stéphane Sarrazin and Senna. D'Ambrosio set the fastest race lap, but this time was denied because he had skipped the chicane due to the collision with Buemi. The two points for the fastest race lap thus went to Prost.
The first three positions in the drivers' championship remained unchanged, Buemi increased his lead over di Grassi. Renault e.dams stayed ahead in the team standings, followed by Dragon Racing ahead of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport.
