In motorsport, braking means a driving error caused by applying the brakes too late or incorrectly .

The consequences of braking depend heavily on the extent and the condition of the route; they range from a short loss of time due to leaving the ideal line to leaving the route in a run-off zone or impact against the boundary of the route.

In automobile sport, braking often manifests itself in the blocking of one or both front wheels, since the use of an anti-lock braking system is usually not permitted here. This can, especially on firm ground such as asphalt , lead to brake plates mostly on the inside front wheel.
