Career
Beginnings in motorsport (1999–2012)
Frijns began his motorsport career in karting in 1999 , where he was active until 2008. Among other things, he was runner-up in the French KF2 championship in 2008.
In 2009 he switched to formula racing and competed for Josef Kaufmann Racing in the European Formula BMW . Frijns won one race and was third in the championship. He also won the best newcomer rating.
In 2010 Frijns stayed with Josef Kaufmann Racing and contested his second season in the European Formula BMW. After being in second place in the drivers 'standings behind Jack Harvey for large parts of the season , he took the lead in the drivers' standings on the last race weekend and won the championship title ahead of Harvey with a total of six wins. Since the series was discontinued at the end of the season, he was the last champion of the European Formula BMW. He also took part in three races of the northern European Formula Renault and scored one victory.
In 2011 Frijns competed in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup for Josef Kaufmann Racing . With five wins, he won the championship title prematurely. In 2011 he also competed for Josef Kaufmann Racing in several races in the northern European Formula Renault. With one win he was fourth overall in this series.
In 2012 Frijns switched to Fortec Motorsport in Formula Renault 3.5 . After finishing third on his debut at Motorland Aragón, Frijns won his first Formula Renault 3.5 race a day later. With two more victories in Wolokolamsk and Mogyoród and a total of eight podium finishes, Frijns won the championship title in his debut season. At the last race of the season in Catalunya , Frijns caused a collision with his title rival Jules Bianchi , who was eliminated. Frijns was penalized for this maneuver after the race and dropped out of the points, but since he was ahead of Bianchi before the race, nothing changed in the drivers' overall result, while his team lost one position in the team classification. Frijns decided the duel against Bianchi with 189 to 184 points. After the season, Frijns completed Formula 1 test drives for Red Bull and Sauber .
GP2 series and Formula 1 test driver (2013–2014)
In 2013 , Frijns held the position of Formula 1 test driver at Sauber. He also completed GP2 test drives for Trident Racing . However, there was no engagement with the racing team. After he was without a cockpit at the season opener of the GP2 series in 2013 , he received a place at Hilmer Motorsport for the second event. On his debut weekend he went without points. In his second participation in Barcelona, he won the main race and came second in the sprint race. Due to the lack of a sponsor, Frijns did not have a fixed contract with Hilmer, but was confirmed for one event. After five race weekends at Hilmer Motorsport, he lost his cockpit to Adrian Quaife-Hobbs . One event later he took over the vehicle of his former teammate Jon Lancaster for a weekend . Frijns took part in six out of eleven race weekends and finished the season in 15th place overall.
In 2014 , Frijns was a Formula 1 test driver at Caterham . In this role he also took part in Friday training sessions.
GT Sport, DTM and FIA Formula E Championship (since 2015)
In 2015 Frijns switched to GT racing to Belgian Audi Club Team WRT . In the Blancpain Sprint Series he shared the cockpit initially with Laurens Vanthoor and for the last event with Christopher Mies . Together with Vanthoor, Frijns won five races. He reached second place overall and lost 127 to 135 to the overall winners Vincent Abril and Maximilian Buhk . In the Blancpain Endurance Series , Frijns came second twice in the Pro class together with Jean Karl Vernay . These finished the two in sixth place.
Then Frijns returned to formula racing. For Andretti Autosport he competed in the FIA Formula E Championship 2015/16 . At his debut ePrix in Beijing , he scored points in tenth place. A race later in Putrajaya followed with a third place, his first podium finish. He finished the season in twelfth place overall. Against his teammate Simona de Silvestro he clearly prevailed with 45 to 4 points. In addition, Frijns drove for the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT in several GT series. In the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup he was tenth overall with a victory he achieved with Enzo Ide and in the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup he was 42nd overall. He also contested a race in the Intercontinental GT Challenge for Team Phoenix , which he won together with Christopher Haase and Vanthoor, and he competed in an ADAC GT Masters event .
For the formula e 2016/17 Frijns remained with Andretti. With two sixth places as the best result and 24 rating points, he finished 13th in the overall ranking. At the end of the season, due to his contract with Audi, he left the team that was now supported by BMW .
Frijns switched to the DTM in 2018 , where he received a cockpit at Abt Sportsline in the Audi program . There he became a teammate of Nico Müller . In the Sunday race at the Lausitzring , he scored his first point in tenth place. In Misano on Saturday, he finished second on the podium for the first time. At the season finale in Hockenheim on Saturday he achieved another second place. He finished the season with 84 points in 13th place in the drivers' championship.
For the FIA Formula E Championship 2018/19 , Frijns received a cockpit from Virgin Racing , which started with Audi customer drives. With two wins and two other podium finishes, he finished fifth in the drivers' championship with 106 points. In addition, with a victory he finished fourth in the overall ranking of the voestalpine European Races , in which only podium places in the races on the European continent were considered.
