The 2013 Formula 1 World Championship was the 64th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It comprised 19 Grand Prix. It started on March 17th in Melbourne and ended on November 24th in Interlagos . Sebastian Vettel became driver world champion for the fourth time in a row, his team Red Bull-Renault for the fourth time in a row constructors' world champion.
Changes in 2013
Grand Prix and race tracks
The European Grand Prix was not on the Formula 1 racing calendar in 2013 after that Grand Prix took place on the Valencia Street Circuit from 2008 to 2012 .
A second race in the United States , the Jersey Grand Prix , was originally planned. Despite being included in the official racing calendar, the Grand Prix was postponed for a year. Instead, a replacement Grand Prix in Europe was initially planned in the official FIA racing calendar. This replacement Grand Prix, which was to take place on July 21st, was removed from the racing calendar by the FIA shortly before the start of the season. There was only speculation about the possible venue.
The venue for the German Grand Prix changes regularly from the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg to the Nürburgring . The confirmation for a race on the Nürburgring was only given at the end of January after the operating company of the track filed for bankruptcy in 2012 .
Regulations
The DRS , which was previously allowed to be used in training on the entire route, will only be allowed in the specified DRS zones analogous to the race from the 2013 season. In addition, active double DRS systems (also known as “passive F-shaft ”), in which the activation mechanism of the DRS is used for other purposes, such as on the Mercedes F1 W03 , are now prohibited.
Due to a different structure, the Pirelli tires used in 2013 weigh around 2 kg more per set than the tires in the previous year - 200 grams for the front tires, 700 grams for the rear tires - which is why the FIA has increased the minimum weight of the vehicles (with driver) from 640 to 642 kg .
The teams are allowed to cover the unaesthetic step on the vehicle nose with a so-called vanity screen. The load tests of the front wings were revised to counteract deformation, after teams had again developed very expensive flutter wings in the previous year , which deformed under high contact pressure and thereby improved the vehicle's aerodynamics.
As there were only 22 drivers left in 2013, the qualifying mode was adjusted. In the first two qualifying sections, Q1 and Q2, the slowest six (instead of seven) drivers are eliminated. The last section is still contested by the ten fastest drivers.
From the Hungarian Grand Prix , the speed limit in the pit lane will be reduced from 100 to 80 km / h, and all team members who work on the car during the race will now have to wear a helmet . During qualifying and the race, only team members and marshals are allowed to move freely in the pit lane, media representatives have to be near the pit wall. These changes were introduced after Mark Webber lost the inadequately secured right rear wheel immediately after a pit stop at the German Grand Prix and hit a cameraman who had to be hospitalized with broken bones and a concussion.

One-size-fits-all supplier Pirelli decided to use softer compounds for the tires in addition to a modified structure. This already led to high tire wear during the test drives before the season. Even after the season opener , which Kimi Raikkonen won because of the low tire degradation of the Lotus E21 , the great influence of tires in Formula 1 was criticized from many sides. After the criticism persisted, Pirelli changed the hard tire compound from the Spanish Grand Prix . After Mercedes had carried out secret test drives on behalf of Pirelli after the race that did not comply with the sporting regulations, Pirelli was again criticized. Mercedes and Pirelli were warned by the FIA for conducting the test, and Mercedes was also prohibited from participating in the Young Driver test drives in July 2013.
After six punctures occurred in the race alone at the British Grand Prix , safety concerns also increasingly played a major role in the tire discussions. Pirelli announced that it will be using new, reinforced rear tires from the German Grand Prix . From the Hungarian Grand Prix onwards, tires were used whose construction corresponded to the tires used in 2012. However, the tire compounds were the same as those previously used in 2013.
Teams
The HRT F1 Team did not register for the 2013 season. This reduces the number of participants from 24 to 22 drivers.

On September 28, 2012, two driver changes became known: Sergio Pérez left Sauber for McLaren , where he became Jenson Button's team-mate . Pérez replaces Lewis Hamilton , who in return announced his move to Mercedes . Hamilton replaces Michael Schumacher there. A week later, on October 4, 2012, Schumacher announced that he would end his Formula 1 career as an active racing driver at the end of the 2012 season.
Nico Hulkenberg left Force India despite a contract for the 2013 season and switched to Sauber . Charles Pic moved from Marussia to Caterham , where he received a multi-year contract.
Adrian Sutil , who was not active in any racing series in 2012, returned to Force India . He drove for the team from 2007, in the first year under the name Spyker , until 2011.
Heikki Kovalainen was initially without a regular cockpit and initially stayed with Caterham as a test driver . Two races before the end of the season he was signed to Lotus as a replacement for the injured Kimi Raikkonen .
Of the first six drivers in last year's GP2 season , three switched to Formula 1 as regular drivers and will make their debut in the 2013 season. Esteban Gutiérrez , who finished third with Lotus GP , switched to Sauber, where he had previously been a test driver. Max Chilton , who came fourth, switched from Carlin to the regular cockpit of Marussia , for which he had already completed test drives. Originally, GP2 runner-up Luiz Razia was to receive the second cockpit at Marussia . However, he was replaced by Jules Bianchi during pre-season tests . Bianchi achieved second place overall for Tech 1 Racing in Formula Renault 3.5 in 2012 and was also a Formula 1 test driver at Force India and Ferrari.
Pedro de la Rosa , 2012 pilot at HRT , was added to the Ferrari driver squad for the 2013 season , where he is one of several test and development drivers . Even Jerome D'Ambrosio , who last year in a race for Lotus was launched, remained as test and reserve driver with Lotus.
Timo Glock , who drove for Marussia in 2012 , is switching to the DTM , where he will become a BMW works driver.
Bruno Senna switched from Williams to the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) to Aston Martin Racing , where he competes in the GTE Pro class. Also Kamui Kobayashi , the 2012 for Sauber was at the start, moved from Formula 1 in the WEC. He received a GTE-Pro cockpit from the Ferrari factory team AF Corse .

Season preparation
5th-8th February: Jerez
The first week of testing took place from February 5th to 8th at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain. Ten cars gave her the Caterham CT03 , the Ferrari F138 , the Force India VJM06 , the Lotus E21 , the Marussia MR02 , the McLaren MP4-28 , the Mercedes F1 W04 , the Red Bull RB9 , the Sauber C32 and the Toro Rosso STR8 Track debut. Lewis Hamilton , Nico Hülkenberg , Sergio Pérez , Charles Pic , Luiz Razia , Pedro de la Rosa and James Rossiter completed the first test drives for their new teams in Jerez. For Force India test driver Rossiter it was the first Formula 1 test drives since January 2008.
19. – 22. February: Barcelona
The second week of testing took place from February 19th to 22nd at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain. In addition to the new vehicles that were used in the first week of testing, the Williams FW35 was used for the first time. With this, each team had presented their new vehicle before this test week.
On the first day of testing, February 19, Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes set the fastest time of the day with a time of 1: 22.616 minutes, ahead of Kimi Räikkönen in the Lotus and Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari . On February 20, Sergio Pérez ( McLaren ) took the lead with a time of 1: 21.848 minutes ahead of Sebastian Vettel ( Red Bull ) and Raikkonen (Lotus). On February 21, the third day of testing, the pilots completed many laps as the weather conditions were worse for the following day. Alonso was the fastest driver in the Ferrari with a time of 1: 21.875 minutes, ahead of Nico Hülkenberg in the Sauber and Romain Grosjean in the Lotus. The last day of the test, February 22nd, was marked by changing weather conditions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time of the day with a time of 1: 23.282 minutes in the Mercedes, ahead of Jenson Button in the McLaren and Jean-Éric Vergne in the Toro Rosso . The best time of the week went to McLaren driver Pérez.
Adrian Sutil returned to Force India in the cockpit after 452 days during this test week .
February 28th - March 3rd: Barcelona
The third week of testing took place from February 28th to March 3rd, like the second, on the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.
February 28, the first day of testing, was characterized by changing weather conditions, so all tire types and compounds were used. With soft tires , Red Bull driver Mark Webber set the fastest time of the day with a fastest lap of 1: 22.693 minutes, ahead of Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes and Jean-Éric Vergne in a Toro Rosso . The weather remained changeable on the second day of the test, March 1st. The exhaust designs that were not considered to be compliant with the regulations, which were still seen on the Caterham CT03 and the Williams FW35 during the first tests , were no longer present on the vehicles in the third week of testing.
