Karthikeyan at the 2005 USA Grand Prix

As the first Indian ever, Karthikeyan made his Formula 1 debut in 2005. At Jordan, he became a teammate of Tiago Monteiro . At the US Grand Prix , he finished fourth behind Monteiro. Due to tire problems, however, only six vehicles started this race. In contrast to Monteiro, he scored no further points. Two eleventh places were his otherwise best placements this season. In the drivers' championship, Karthikeyan finally took 18th place.

Williams (2006-2007)

After completing test drives for the Williams team in December 2005 , the racing team signed him as a test driver. In winter 2006/2007 Karthikeyan joined the Indian team in the A1GP . At the end of the season, his contract was no longer renewed.

A1GP, Le Mans and Superleague Formula

Karthikeyan in the A1GP in Kyalami 2009

In the 2007/2008 season of the A1GP, Karthikeyan was the driver of the Indian team for nine out of ten race weekends. He won one race each at Zhuhai and Brands Hatch and was instrumental in ensuring that his team finished the season in tenth place in the championship. In the A1GP season 2008/2009 Karthikeyan was finally the only operational pilot of the Indian A1GP team. With a second place as the best result, his team finished the season in twelfth place in the championship.

He then competed in the Le Mans Series for Team Kolles in 2009 . He had already worked with his team boss, Colin Kolles , at Jordan in Formula 1 in 2005. He started four out of five races and finished 19th in the LMP1 category. It was also to be used in the Le Mans 24-hour race . However, due to a shoulder injury that he sustained shortly before the start, he was unable to compete. In 2010 Karthikeyan returned to formula racing and started for the PSV Eindhoven team, which is supported by several racing teams, in the Superleague Formula . Return to Formula 1

HRT (2011–2012)

Karthikeyan returned to HRT in Formula 1 in 2011

In 2011 Karthikeyan returned to Formula 1 with the Spanish racing team HRT . At the racing team, he worked again with Colin Kolles, who had meanwhile become HRT team manager. Karthikeyan received financial support from the Indian company Tata on his comeback, which supported him, among other things, because of the first Indian Grand Prix . At the first race weekend in Australia he failed because of the 107 percent rule . Although he took part in the next seven races, he was mostly distanced from his teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi . After the European Grand Prix he was replaced by Daniel Ricciardo . After being used in some Friday practice sessions, Karthikeyan completed another race at his home Grand Prix, the Indian Grand Prix . At the end of the season he finished 26th in the world championship.

At the beginning of February 2012, HRT confirmed Karthikeyan as a regular driver for the 2012 Formula 1 season . As in the previous year, Karthikeyan and his teammate, Pedro de la Rosa this season, failed to qualify at the season opener, the Australian Grand Prix , and were subsequently not allowed to race. A race later in Malaysia , Karthikeyan qualified and was noticed by two collisions. First he collided with Jenson Button , who had fallen behind him due to his pit stop, then he touched Sebastian Vettel , who lapped him. While Karthikeyan drove on, the other two pilots had to pit for repairs. For the collision with Vettel, he was subsequently given a drive-through penalty. At the Monaco Grand Prix he achieved his best result for HRT with a 15th place. However, he was the last of those who crossed the finish line in the race. At the end of the season Karthikeyan finished 24th in the drivers' championship. HRT stopped racing at the end of the season.

Auto GP

In 2013 , Karthikeyan received a cockpit from Zele Racing for the Auto GP season opener . He stayed with the racing team for the first three racing weekends. Fourth place was his best result. He then moved to SuperNova International . In his first race for the new team at Silverstone, he managed to win from pole position. In the further course of the season Karthikeyan decided four races for themselves. With five wins he was together with Kimiya Satō the driver with the most wins. Karthikeyan finished the drivers' championship in fourth place.

Super formula

In 2014 Karthikeyan switched to Super Formula in Japan. He started for the Impul team. He had already been active for the racing team in 2001 when it was still called Formula Nippon. With a sixth place as the best result, he was 13th in the drivers' championship. In 2015 Karthikeyan stayed in the Super Formula and switched to Dandelion Racing . At the season opener in Suzuka , he achieved his first podium finish with a third place, which was his only point placement of the season. He improved to eleventh place in the overall standings.
