- April 24 : The silent comedy The Bangville Police of Mack Sennett has its premiere . The feature film of the Keystone Studios , where Mabel Normand starring is one of the first in which the Keystone Cops make an appearance.
- September 8th : Mack Sennett's feature film Mabel's Dramatic Career with Mabel Normand and Roscoe Arbuckle premieres.
- September 25 : Charles Chaplin signs an annual contract with Keystone Studios , the comedy specialists for the New York Motion Picture Company . He then leaves Fred Karno's comedy troupe .
- October 30th : The feature film The Speed Kings with Mabel Normand, Ford Sterling and Roscoe Arbuckle has its world premiere. With Teddy Tetzlaff , Earl Cooper and Barney Oldfield you can see three well-known racing drivers of their time.
- The film producer William Fox founds the film distribution company Greater New York Film Rental .
- Harold Lloyd begins his career as an extra for the Edison film company. A little later he switched to Universal Studios , where he met the film assistant Hal Roach .

- May 13 : The film biography Richard Wagner by director Carl Froelich , filmed on the occasion of Richard Wagner's 100th birthday, has its world premiere in Berlin. Giuseppe Becce , who wrote the music for the silent film, also plays the title role.
- August 22nd : The feature film Der Student von Prag with Paul Wegener in the title role is premiered in Berlin . It is considered to be the world's first auteur film and art film. The buildings and costumes were designed by Klaus Richter and Rochus Gliese and executed by Robert A. Dietrich . The double exposure shots by cameraman Guido Seeber are considered to be an important step towards separating German film from theater towards a film-specific expression.
Austria-Hungary
- September 10 : The fictional film Der Millionunkel von Hubert Marischka , produced by Wiener Kunstfilm , has its world premiere. Embedded in a framework story, the famous tenor and stage actor Alexander Girardi shows a cross-section of his most famous stage roles. The music for the film comes from Robert Stolz .
- September: Under the title Talking Film , sound films are presented for the first time in Austria in the Sofiensäle in Vienna (Edison Kinetophon and Gaumont ) .
- November 20 : The silent film Johann Strauss on the beautiful blue Danube by and with Carl von Zeska , produced by Wiener Kunstfilm , is premiered in the Vienna Opera Cinema. The film arouses criticism because the death of Johann Strauss (son) was only 14 years ago.
- The first mass scene in an Austrian film takes place in Unrecht Gut prosper not the Viennese art film.
- One of the first works on film theory appears: "Thoughts on the Aesthetics of Cinema" by Georg Lukács
