World premieres

January 30 : World premiere of City Lights (directed by Charles Chaplin ), which becomes one of Chaplin's most successful films.
February 12 : World premiere of Dracula (directed by Tod Browning ). This film with Bela Lugosi in the title role is considered to be the first official film adaptation of Bram Stoker's eponymous horror novel .
May 11 : World premiere of M (director: Fritz Lang ). In the period that followed, this work established itself as one of the most important German films. In 1994, the Deutsche Kinemathek Foundation announced, as a result of a survey among film experts, that M was the most important work in German film history.
December 2 : The feature film Emil and the Detectives based on the novel of the same name by Erich Kästner has its world premiere in Berlin. Kästner, who was very dissatisfied with Günter Stapenhorst's original screenplay , was finally convinced by the sensitive reworking of the young director Samuel Wilder .
