Patricia Norris (born March 22, 1931 , † February 20, 2015 in Van Nuys , California ) was an American costume designer who was nominated six times for the Oscar for best costume design , making it one of the most frequently nominated in this category without Oscar win heard.

biography

Patricia Norris had worked as a clerk in the costume department of Warner Bros. for a long time before she was given the opportunity to work as a costume designer for the first time in the late 1960s. Her first film was the 1968 western The Last of the Red River . Two years later, another western followed with Rio Lobo by Howard Hawks (this time with John Wayne ), where she mainly dressed the leading actress Jennifer O'Neill . In the course of her career, Patricia Norris has contributed to the making of around 90 films.

At the 1979 Academy Awards she was first nominated for an Oscar in the category of best costume design in Terrence Malick's 1978 film In der Embers des Südens . The next Oscar nomination for best costume design followed in 1983 for the comedy Victor / Victoria (1982) by Blake Edwards , before it was nominated again in this category at the 1985 Academy Awards , this time for the science fiction film 2010: The Year In whom we contact (1984) by Peter Hyams. For this film she was nominated again for a Saturn Award for best costume. In 1989 Patricia Norris was again nominated for an Oscar for the costumes in Sunset - Twilight in Hollywood (1988) by Blake Edwards.

As a result, she received an Emmy in 1990 for the most outstanding costume design in the pilot of the series Twin Peaks as well as an Emmy nomination for the most outstanding production design . She was nominated at the Satellite Awards 2007 along with Martin Gendron and Troy Sizemore for best production design in the western drama The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) by Andrew Dominik . Her last major film was the critically acclaimed 12 Years a Slave , for which she received numerous nominations.

In addition to numerous other films and TV series, she worked as a costume designer on the TV series The Waltons (1972) and the mafia film Scarface (1983) by Brian De Palma .
