Andrew Dominik (* 1967 in Wellington , New Zealand ) is an Australian director and screenwriter .

Life

Dominik has lived in Australia since the age of two and graduated from Melbourne ’s Swinburne Film School in 1988.

From 2009 to 2010 he was engaged to actress Robin Tunney .

Career

In 2000 he made his debut as a director and screenwriter with the film drama Chopper . The production has won several awards, including Dominik winning Best Director at the Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards .

It wasn't until 2007 that he shot the western The murder of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford with Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck in the title roles, his second feature film. Again he was responsible for the script. The film received the Spur Award for Best Western Drama in 2008 .

Another collaboration with Pitt resulted in the thriller Killing Them Softly (original working title: Cogan's Trade ) in which the actor takes on the lead role of criminal Jackie Cogan, who is supposed to investigate the robbery of a poker game shielded by the mafia. The material is based on the Boston detective novel Cogan's Trade by George V. Higgins from 1974. The film, in other roles with James Gandolfini , Richard Jenkins , Ray Liotta and Sam Shepard , was invited to the 2012 International competition Cannes Film Festival 2012 .
