Casey Affleck (* 12. August 1975 in Falmouth , Massachusetts as Caleb Casey McGuire Affleck-Boldt ) is an American actor and director . In 2017 he won the Oscar for best actor for his role in Manchester by the Sea .

Life

Earlier years

Affleck was born in Falmouth , Massachusetts, the second son of Christine Anne and Timothy Byers Affleck. His older brother is the actor Ben Affleck . His mother was a teacher and worked for the local school district, and his father was a medication agent, social worker, janitor, auto mechanic, and bartender. He was also an actor at the Theater Company of Boston. Affleck is of Irish, Scottish and English ancestry and is a distant cousin of Matt Damon . He grew up in a family belonging to the Episcopal Church of the United States of America . Casey Affleck attended George Washington University in Washington, DC and then went to New York City to Columbia University , where he studied physics, astronomy and Western philosophy. But he did not graduate. During his high school and college years, he worked occasionally as an actor on productions for television.

First appearances (1995 to 2006)

In his first film role, he starred alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Nicole Kidman, an adolescent with personality disorder in Gus Van Sant's film To Die For . In 1997 he was seen in the film Race the Sun , in which he had his first leading role. In the same year he made two films with his brother, Chasing Amy and Good Will Hunting . The latter was written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who won the Oscar for Best Screenplay .

In 1998 he starred with Kate Hudson in the film Desert Blue and in 2000 he starred in the crime comedy The Mona Case alongside Danny DeVito , Bette Midler and Neve Campbell on the big screen. These films turned out to be commercial failures.

In 2001 Affleck was part of the ensemble in the film Ocean's Eleven by Steven Soderbergh . Affleck played the character Virgil Malloy and was also seen in the same role in the two sequels Ocean's 12 and Ocean's 13 .

In 2002 he worked with Matt Damon and Gus Van Sant on the script for the film Gerry .

Breakthrough as an actor (since 2007)

In 2007, he played Robert Ford , the killer of Jesse James , in the Western The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford alongside Brad Pitt , Jesse James embodied. For his acting performance, he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor . He was also nominated for an Oscar and the Screen Actors Guild Award . For this role he received consistently good reviews from the trade press.

In 2007 he played his first major lead role in the film Gone Baby Gone , directed by his brother Ben. The film received very good reviews and Casey was recognized for his acting.

In 2010 his first own film, I'm Still Here, premiered at the Venice International Film Festival . Affleck directed and wrote the screenplay with his brother-in-law Joaquin Phoenix.

In 2017 he received a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar for his leading role in the drama Manchester by the Sea .

Affleck married his childhood friend and fellow actor Summer Phoenix on June 3, 2006 in Savannah, Georgia . The couple have two sons (born in 2004 and 2008). With the marriage, he also became the brother-in-law of Rain , River , Liberty and Joaquin Phoenix. In March 2016, Affleck and Phoenix announced their split.

He volunteers for animal welfare and supports PETA and Farm Sanctuary campaigns. He is vegan for ethical and health reasons , speaks fluent Spanish and lives with his family in Los Angeles and Winter Park, Florida .
