Staff and cast

The director took David Lowery , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. The project was reported for the first time in autumn 2016 after the shooting had already been completed. Lowery was inspired by an argument the filmmaker had with his wife when he came up with the idea for the film. He did not want to leave the old house in which they lived, because he believed he had memories of the old house as well as memories of it. In his film, he anthropomorphizes a very specific place in time.

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The story about time and transience is told very calmly, leaving plenty of room for reflection. Children under the age of 12 can be overwhelmed by the film because of the sometimes gloomy atmosphere in combination with individual moments of horror and violence. "

Reviews and grossing results

David Lowery directed the film

The film received a positive rating from 91 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics and received an average rating of 8 out of a possible 10 points.

Sebastian Lucas from robots-and-dragons.de explains that the horror film is based on classics of its genre, such as John Carpenter's Halloween - The Night of Horror , Tim Burton's Beetlejuice and the Conjuring films by James Wan . Peter Debruge of Variety says the independent film was not creepy, could one not going. Debruge is reminded of films by Apichatpong Weerasethakul that have been translated for a Western audience. Lowery's film gives an alternative view of the supernatural, but the audience expecting a gripping horror film will be disappointed, according to Debruge.

Oliver Kaever of Zeit Online calls A Ghost Story one of the most emotional films of the year and goes on to say: “Seldom does a director and his actors succeed in really believing a deep, intimate love between two people. Often intimacy is talked to death. Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, on the other hand, appear in A Ghost Story as if they were made for each other. "

Anke Westphal from epd Film explains that David Lowery tells impressionistically and unrelatedly in static, theatrical shots that often last for minutes and in a ratio of 4: 3 , where the image width is only a little larger than the image height, which should signal to the viewers that this is not a traditional one Feature film is. The director operates less with the word than with the categories of space, image and time, and in the staging of wordless misfortune he repeatedly comes up with highly poetic scenes. Westphal sums up: "Ultimately, despite all nihilism, this film paints a romantic picture of the human search for meaning and that which remains when we are no longer."

Lukas Stern from Spiegel Online describes the house in the film as a time store and a medium through which intimacy communicates, the bearer of meaning for this one, specific love relationship. For Lowery, love is not simply tied to the idea that its power goes beyond death by producing a ghost and thus building bridges between this and the hereafter, and sums it up: “Indeed, Lowery has a remarkable and deeply romantic one Idea of what eternal love could be. And if you don't believe it straight away, you should be convinced of it at the latest when eternity flies around your ears in the credits of this film. "

Karsten Munt from the Kino Arbeitsgemeinschaft Kino thinks how mourning connects the living and the dead in a film, can best be explained if one classifies A Ghost Story in the tradition of fairy tales , somewhere between the bitter melancholy of Hans Christian Andersen and the images, that the Weerasethakuls cinema has been dreaming of on the screen for years: “As with the Thai director, the 16 mm recordings by cameraman Andrew Droz Palermo stand until ghosts come to life in them. In one of the most beautiful moments in the film, two of these ghosts face each other on the windows of the houses to which they are bound. They look at each other in silence while the subtitles tell, as if in a dialogue, of their time of waiting. The other person seems to be lost in time, has forgotten who it is waiting for in his house, while the ghost of C itself slowly threatens to disappear in the reflection of the window pane. "

The American film critic Kyle Buchanan of Vulture.com says of the viewing habits in his country that American moviegoers are not familiar with such protracted observations of a character.

The cost of producing the film of around $ 100,000 is offset by revenue from screenings of around $ 1.8 million.
