biography
Youth and early career
Joaquin Phoenix was born in Río Piedras , Puerto Rico in 1974 . His parents served as missionaries for the Children of God sect . In 1978 the family turned away from the religious movement and settled in Los Angeles . As a sign of this new beginning, the surname was changed from Bottom to Phoenix .
Also to improve the family's financial situation, Joaquin and his four siblings River (1970-1993), Rain (1972), Liberty (1976) and Summer (1978) took part in various talent shows. Soon the siblings were discovered by an agent and began to work as child actors .
Joaquin was seen in various commercials and television series in the 1980s. At the age of ten he received a nomination for the Young Artist Award for best young actor in a family film ( Backwards: The Riddle of Dyslexia ).
He played his first leading roles in the films Russkies (1987) and Ron Howard's Eine Wahnsinnsfamilie (1989). As a child actor, he usually appeared under his artist and nickname "Leaf".
Acting
After a break from Hollywood, Phoenix returned to acting in 1995 and appeared in various supporting and leading roles. In 1995 he played alongside Nicole Kidman in Gus Van Sant's drama To Die For , in 1997 he was in the coming-of-age film The Abbotts and in 1998 in Oliver Stone's thriller U-Turn - No way back . His international breakthrough came with his portrayal of the Roman Emperor Commodus in Ridley Scott's Gladiator from 2000. He was nominated for numerous prizes for his performance, including an Oscar for best supporting actor.
Phoenix was then seen in two films by director M. Night Shyamalan : Signs and The Village . He was a speaker in Shaun Monson's documentary Earthlings about animal husbandry and meat consumption. In 2004 he starred as a firefighter in the movie Im Feuer , directed by Jay Russel. Together with John Travolta and the other actors, he trained in a fire brigade school under real conditions in order to be able to present the representation in the film as authentically as possible. The film and Joaquin Phoenix were nominated for the 2005 MovieGuide Awards and the Teen Choice Award.
In the 2005 biographical drama Walk the Line , Phoenix played the country singer Johnny Cash . The actor was selected for the role of Cash, as was Reese Witherspoon , who plays Cash's second wife June Carter Cash in the film . Phoenix sang all the songs for the film himself. He received a lot of praise for the role, won the Golden Globe Award for best actor in a comedy or musical and was nominated for an Oscar for best actor .
In October 2008, Phoenix announced that he would retire from the film business to devote himself to music. In the following years he appeared with long hair and a beard and drew attention to himself with bizarre appearances on talk shows and as a curious rap artist. It was only in September 2010 that it turned out to be a hoax : The mockumentary I'm Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix by Casey Affleck accompanies Phoenix as he announces his apparent withdrawal from the film business and shows his attempts, some of which are staged to gain a foothold as a rapper.
In 2012 he starred alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman in Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master . The film is loosely based on the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and is about the creation of a sect. For his acting performance, he was nominated for the second time for the Oscar for best actor. In 2017 he received the Actor Award at the 70th Cannes Film Festival for his role in the British film You Were Never Really Here by director Lynne Ramsay .
In 2019 he was seen in the title role in Joker . At the 76th Venice Film Festival, he was “celebrated” for his performance by critics and audiences alike, although he did not receive the award for best male actor. In January 2020, however, he was named Best Actor in a Drama at the Golden Globe Awards . A month later he received the Oscar for Best Actor .
Between 2000 and 2007, Phoenix was largely dubbed by Nicolas Böll . Since 2007 Tobias Kluckert has been his standard German voice for the most part.
Director
Phoenix has directed several music videos, including for bands and musicians Ringside , She Wants Revenge , People in Planes , Albert Hammond Jr. and Silversun Pickups .
Engagement and activism
Joaquin Phoenix has been a vegan since childhood and is committed to the animal rights organization PETA . In his films he only wears fur and leather-free clothing. As part of his activism, he lent his voice to the two documentaries Earthlings and Dominion , which educate about the use and abuse of animals. Phoenix is an atheist . He is engaged to Rooney Mara .
