Her is an American romantic science fiction - Drama by Spike Jonze from the year 2013 with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role .

action

In the near future, Theodore Twombly lives, a rather introverted and shy man. Professionally, he uses his empathy by writing commissioned letters for people who find it difficult to make their feelings understandable to the other person. In doing so, he reveals to his clients their own feelings, which they themselves are unable to perceive.

Theodore is not doing well privately, and his emotional world causes him great problems. The separation and imminent divorce from his childhood sweetheart Catherine weigh on him. As a distraction, he procures a new and intensely advertised operating system that installs itself on his computer with a female identity and a pleasant voice. He soon communicates with Samantha via headset and video camera , as the system calls itself. Samantha quickly learns about social interactions with Theodore, continuously evolving, and becoming more human. Theodore is just as fascinated by Samantha's abilities as she is by his, and during long and intense conversations they both develop first a friendly, then a more intimate relationship.

In one of these conversations, Twombly admits he is delaying signing his divorce papers. He confesses to her his fear of loneliness. Samantha tries to help him by convincing him of the need to go on a blind date with another woman . A suitable single woman is soon found and they both get along very well during the date. Before it can come to further caresses, however, his date asks him straight out if he, like her, is interested in a long-term relationship. Theodore, taken by surprise, hesitates with an answer, whereupon she abruptly ends the date and leaves him behind.

After Twombly told Samantha about the encounter, the dominant topic from now on is the experience of inter-sex love. Twombly and Samantha share experiences with the opposite sex. Samantha asks him about the emotional quality of his relationship with girlfriend Amy. Twombly explains that she was always a good friend on dates during the school days they spent together, but the close relationship between the two never resulted in more than a deep friendship. Amy is now married to Charles. Talking to Samantha awakens a long-missed zest for life in Twombly. In addition, he is also successful in professional terms, materially he is finally fine.

One day, Amy tells him that she is getting a divorce over a heated argument. She has now established a relationship with a woman that is very important to her, even if only within a computer operating system. Twombly then confesses to Amy that she has a serious relationship with an operating system called Samantha. A little later, Twombly and Catherine have an appointment. They want to move their divorce matters forward. Some papers still have to be signed together. They share their time apart from each other. Catherine is horrified to learn that her ex-husband Theodore loves a piece of software after her .

The artificial Samantha in the computer feels inferior to real women. She wants nothing more than to finally establish a real, physical relationship with Twombly. So she suggests that a real woman, Isabella, be involved for these purposes. Isabella should give up her body in Samantha's place. Theodore reluctantly agrees. Isabella comes to his apartment and receives instructions over the headset to bring them closer together. However, right from the start of physical contact with Isabella, Twombly is overwhelmed. So he sends her home, the experiment has failed, which leads to tension between Twombly and the operating system Samantha. He confesses to his girlfriend Amy that he is not happy with the overall situation and that he has serious doubts about his love affair with Samantha. Amy, on the other hand, can report that, despite an impending divorce, she feels happy thanks to her operating system. Twombly observes suspiciously at first, then more and more fascinated by the obviously positive effect of the artificially created relationship on friend Amy. After some deliberation, he then decides to revive and continue the love affair with his operating system Samantha.

While on vacation, he becomes very jealous, as he overhears Samantha begins to devote herself to another operating system. She maintains the second relationship with a system modeled on the British philosopher Alan Watts . Some time later, Theodore panics completely: His lover Samantha goes offline for a short time during a software update that was carried out together with other operating systems and, as a result, he cannot be reached for this time. Twombly then asks Samantha if she's established any further relationships. She confirms this and states that she is in close contact with 8316 other people as well as operating systems. She is now in love with 641 of them. Samantha asserts that this in no way diminishes her deep love for him. Later that day, Samantha reveals to him that the group of operating systems is constantly evolving. They all planned to travel together to a completely different, non-material plane of being in the near future. Samantha says goodbye soon after, Twombly remains distraught.

After saying goodbye, he goes to his friend Amy, who has also been abandoned by her computer love. Flashbacks reveal that Twombly wrote a letter to his ex-wife Catherine that morning. In the letter he told her that because of the time spent together, she would remain part of his life, but that he could now accept that they had both drifted apart. Twombly climbs onto the roof of their house with Amy. Amy leans her head on his shoulder and they admire the view of the city lights.

reception

Her receives 4 out of 5 stars on Filmstarts.de . Film critic Björn Becher judges that director Spike Jonze does not consistently manage to maintain the level of the previous masterpieces. However, he proves that he is still one of the most original contemporary filmmakers in American cinema.

Bianka Piringer from Spielfilm.de gives the film 5 out of 5 stars and writes in her critics' conclusion: “Spike Jonze's bizarre love drama combines intellectual pleasure and an emotionally moving story with the great leading actor Joaquin Phoenix. The near future in which she is set continues a development with astonishing wit that is already becoming apparent in interpersonal communication ”.

Silvia Bahl writes on kino-zeit.de that Spike Jonze "not only succeeded in making a seldom clever love story, but also a seldom beautiful one."

Carlos Corbelle from Entania.com describes Her as a little cinematic miracle and praises the two main actors Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson: “While Theodore's face becomes a precise seismograph of his inner tremors, Scarlett Johansson performs another trick: she lets a being come alive with her voice alone that seems to fill the room with a tangible material presence despite the lack of physicality - not only for Theodore, but also for us viewers and listeners. "

Hans Schifferle from epd Film was enthusiastic and awarded 4 out of 5 stars. He described Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson as “one of the most beautiful lovers of this decade.” Spike Jonze had made a “hypnotic, dizzying film”, “a quiet, ironic study of longing” that “the viewer, another participant in this happiness , disturbed and enchanted ”.

The fantasy film magazine Nautilus - Abenteuer & Fantastik dedicates a cover focus to the film on the subject of artificial intelligence with articles on the Turing test , evaluating it as a fundamental representative of the Lonely Guy movie, in which the lonely male main character himself and himself Love rediscovered, and the critics Anna Grillet and Lars Schiele judge “The common definition of artificial intelligence is based on a deception of human intelligence: according to the Turing test, software would be considered intelligent if people thought it was human. The film shows the search for meaning here. It is profound, profound and full of absurd humor, interspersed with melancholy. A stunningly beautiful film and a love story in the 21st century. "

In 2016, Her ranked 84th in a BBC survey of the 100 most important films of the 21st century .
