Eric James Zumbrunnen ( November 1964 - August 1, 2017 in Pacific Palisades ) was an American film editor and musician .

Life

Although Eric James Zumbrunnen worked in a movie theater while he was in high school and helped out with student films from time to time during college, he said he never wanted to gain a foothold in the film business. It was rather the college course "videotape-editing for non-fictional television" and the contacts he made with a film editing company that helped him to find a job as an assistant editor after graduating. He stayed with the company for several months, assisting with the editing of shows, commercials and music videos. Among them was the MTV show Cutting Edge through which he established contacts with Jane's Addiction and which then convinced him to cut her music videos and shows exclusively for her.

His contacts in the music business benefited from the fact that Zumbrunnen himself was active as a guitarist and singer from 1985 to 1987 in the rock band Holmes , which was known as the “83st hottest band in LA”. He made and worked for other great musicians such as Iron Maiden , Ice Cube and Björk . However, he also met the music video director Spike Jonze , with whom he took over the film editing for the first time in 1999 on his feature film debut Being John Malkovich . For this work he not only received the American Eddie Eddie Award, but also a nomination for Best Film Editing at the British Academy Film Awards 2000.

Then Zumbrunnen also cut other short and feature films for Jonze such as Adaption. , Where the Wild Things Are , I'm Here and forth .

He died of cancer on August 1, 2017.

Eric Zumbrunnen was a member of the American Cinema Editors . In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
