action

The first season takes place in 1977, at a time when criminal psychology is still in its infancy, and is about FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, who deal with the detailed questioning of serial killers and by explaining their approach analyze, want to draw conclusions about their behavior. They hope to gain new knowledge for profiling when investigating unsolved murders . Holden and Tench are employees of the Behavioral Science Unit , which is initially being set up on a trial basis at the FBI Academy. The psychologist Wendy Carr also complements the team to provide scientific support. On the one hand, the series includes interviews with serial killers who have already been convicted, but also shows the reservations that were made towards profiling.

In the second season, a new manager takes over the behavioral science unit , who wants to promote profiling and establish it as a routine in the investigative work of the FBI. Ford and Tench support the Atlanta child murder investigation .

The role of Holden Ford is modeled on FBI case analyst John E. Douglas . His older colleague Robert Ressler served as the model for the character of Bill Tench and the role of Wendy Carr is based on Ann Wolbert Burgess , a professor at Boston College . The characters of the interviewed serial killers in the first season are inspired by the real serial killers of the same name Edmund Kemper , Jerry Brudos and Richard Speck , the dialogues in the interview scenes are based on real FBI interviews. The figure of the ADT man appearing in the opening scenes of some episodes gives an insight into the approach taken by serial killer Dennis Rader .

reception

The series received excellent reviews in its first season: Mindhunter was able to secure a rating of 96% at Rotten Tomatoes . Bjarne Bock said on behalf of Serienjunkies.de as follows: "The David Fincher drama Mindhunter can be located somewhere between True Detective , Hannibal and Mad Men in terms of content and style ." Bock criticized the imbalance of the narrative tempo and the increasing neglect of the scientific aspect of the story, but overall he was confident that “this exciting and fantastically staged Netflix series will easily succeed” in “captivating its viewers deeply ".

Keith Uhlich of the Hollywood Reporter praised the main actor of the series as well as the director: "Groff is convincing from the first moment as a person whose raw talent is as an obstacle as an advantage and Fincher's surgical precision is evident in every tiny detail. for example with the police megaphone, which distorts the voice of a police officer in exactly the right amount in a nerve-wracking manner ”.

Cameron Britton received an Emmy nomination for best guest actor in a drama series for his role as Edmund Kemper .
