Cotter Smith

Joseph Cotter Smith (born May 29, 1949 in Washington, DC ) is an American actor .

Life

Joseph Cotter Smith is the son of Madeline Cotter and John Lewis Smith, Jr., a former federal judge. In 1972 he received his bachelor's degree in literature from Trinity College in Hartford , Connecticut . From 1978 he studied with Stella Adler at The Actors Studio in New York City . He then played theater for several years before he had his first major role in a feature film in 1983 with the television drama Persecuted to Death, directed by Mike Newell , with its portrayal of Robert F. Kennedy on the side of Danny Aiello and Ernest Borgnine .

Smith is married for the third time. From 1972 to 1980 he was married to Christina Egloff. He was married to actress Mel Harris , with whom he has a daughter, from 1988 to 1996. He has been married to Heidi Mueller since March 31, 2001.
