The occupation was taken over unchanged. The film is part of the X-Men film franchise and was continued with X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006 . The film opened in German cinemas on May 1, 2003.

action

Nightcrawler, a mutant equipped with the ability to teleport , invades the White House and from there to the President of the United States to attack him with a knife. Shortly before he can stab, however, he is shot and has to flee. What remains is the knife to which a ribbon is attached with the inscription “Mutant Freedom Now!” ( English for “Freedom for mutants, now!”).

Magneto , one of the most powerful mutants, is sitting in a maximum security prison made of plastic , as he can manipulate metal with his magnetic forces and could break out of a normal prison. Professor Charles Xavier is still busy with his "school for talented young people" to promote peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants. The military scientist William Stryker has no interest in it; he is working flat out to destroy all mutants. With the help of Cerebro, Xavier has now located the president's assassin and sends Storm and Jean Gray to bring the unknown mutant to him. When Storm and Jean find the Nightcrawler , it turns out that he was somehow manipulated into an assassination attempt.

The attack on the president gives Stryker the power to start the war against the mutants and squeezes all information about the school and Cerebro out of Magneto. When Xavier and his companion visit Cyclops Magneto, Stryker has them both overwhelmed and trapped. Then he storms Xavier's school with a special squad and tries to capture all the students, but only six of the children fall into his hands; the remaining mutants can escape through a secret tunnel with the help of Logan . Another goal is to be able to take parts of Cerebro with you. When Logan meets Stryker, his memory seems to return, but then he too has to flee. Also Rogue , her boyfriend Iceman and Pyro can escape, and after they meet again to Logan, they flee to Boston, where Iceman's family lives, to meet with Storm and Jean meet. Meanwhile, however, Stryker succeeds in capturing Xavier and Cyclops and taking them to his secret base.

Mystique , Magneto's last mate, drugged a guard from Magneto's prison and injected him with liquefied iron . The next day the metal detector at the security check in front of Magneto's special cell does not recognize the iron contained in the blood; Magneto himself, however, can feel it with his powers when the guard enters his cell. He brutally pulls the iron out of the guard's body and with the help of the metal manages to escape.

Logan, Iceman, Rogue and Pyro have meanwhile reached the house of Iceman's parents. When they learn that their son is a mutant, they are horrified, and Iceman's younger brother secretly calls the police. The four mutants want to flee, and Logan is shot in the head by a police officer. Pyro, who can manipulate fire at will, attacks the police officers and their emergency vehicles until Rogue stops him. Logan, who has since recovered through his ability to regenerate, is just waking up when Storm, Jean and Nightcrawler land with the jet . On their escape they are attacked by fighter jets and only escape when Storm uses their skills to create a storm with tornadoes. When their jet is finally hit by a rocket , they threaten to crash and are only saved at the last moment by Magneto's forces.

In order to defeat their common opponent Stryker and free Professor Xavier, the X-Men team up with Magneto. With Professor Xavier's jet they reach Stryker's underground military base, which is located under the wall of a dam . Mystique transforms into Logan to outsmart the guards and enters the structure through the overflow shaft , from where she opens the way for the rest of the mutants. While they overpower the guards and go in search of Professor Xavier, Logan investigates the base on his own. At the sight of the walls and corridors his memory comes back in fragments; It was at this military base that he obtained his claws and skeleton from adamantium as a victim of one of Stryker's earlier experiments . At that time he was only able to survive these inhuman experiments thanks to his unique ability to regenerate and finally to flee. Stryker shows up and reveals himself to Logan. Before he can attack Stryker, Logan is attacked in turn by Lady Deathstrike, a mutant who was also "bred" by Stryker and whose skeleton was also coated with adamantium. Like Nightcrawler before, Stryker also influences Lady Deathstrike with a poison and can therefore control her mentally. Stryker is able to settle down and Logan takes out his opponent by pumping her liquid adamantium into the body.

The remaining mutants are now searching in separate groups. Jean, Magneto and Mystique meet Cyclops, who is drugged by Stryker, who attacks immediately. Jean can push him back; this creates cracks in the reinforced concrete of the dam, and it threatens to break apart. Cyclops regains consciousness and together with Jean he continues the search for Xavier and the kidnapped children. These have since been found by the other mutants.

As it turns out, Stryker's son Jason is also a mutant. He was previously a student at Xavier's school, where his ability to create strong mental illusions was fully developed. During a stay at home he had driven his mother to suicide as a result; now he is supposed to take control of Xavier, made docile by the vengeful Stryker through one of his drugs. With the help of Cerebro , copied by Stryker in one of the vaults, Xavier is supposed to establish contact with all mutants on earth and destroy them all in one fell swoop with his mental powers. Xavier, completely under the influence of Jason, begins to operate the machine. Stryker gives him his final instructions, then he pulls away because of the impending destruction of the dam and with it the underground facility.

Magneto and Mystique find access to Cerebro , turn off the guards and penetrate the interior of the vault-like machine, where the mutant Jason still holds Professor Xavier influenced. Magneto, who considers mutants to be evolutionarily higher, wants to exterminate all non-mutated ("normal") people and now sees the chance to use the situation in his favor. The Mystique, transformed into Stryker, gives Jason Magnetos new orders: Xavier should locate and turn off all "normal" people. Then Magneto and Mystique also flee outside, and Pyro joins them.

Finally, the X-Men also find access to Cerebro . Nightcrawler teleports himself and Storm inside. You can't break the influence of Jason at first, so Storm lets the temperature drop sharply until Xavier regains control over himself. Just before the vault collapses, Nightcrawler can teleport Storm and Xavier to safety.

Now the entire base begins to collapse. The X-Men can barely escape to the surface below the dam. Rogue, actually still inexperienced in handling Xavier's jet, manages to land him with the group, but he is damaged in the process and cannot be launched. The dam breaks in some places and the water shoots into the valley. Jean leaves the jet in order to use her telekinetic powers to stop the tidal wave and at the same time to bring the jet out of danger, then she is swallowed by the thundering water. Stryker, who was caught by Logan on his escape and left tied up by Magneto, suffers the same fate.

The X-Men immediately went to Washington, where they presented the President with documents from William Stryker, which prove that he was the mastermind behind the assassination. So they can stop the president from speaking out against the mutants on television. You can then see that Professor Xavier's school has reopened and that “normal” school life has returned. Cyclops and Logan mourn Jean Gray, for whom they both had strong feelings.

In the last scene you can see a tracking shot over Alkali Lake while you can hear Jean talking about mutations from the off . The scene is faded out while the shape of a phoenix can be guessed at in the water .

music

The opening scene with Nightcrawler's attack on the president is accompanied by a version of " Dies Irae " from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem, rearranged by film composer John Ottman .

synchronization

The German synchronization was for a dialogue book and the dialogue director of Tobias Meister on behalf of Interopa Film GmbH in Berlin . Trivia

When Mystique is working on Yuriko's computer, you can see that there are files on it about various mutants that do not otherwise appear in the film, but are known in the X-Men universe, e.g. B. Gambit , Banshee and Sabretooth .

A film bug has crept in. Before Nightcrawler teleports into the children's cell, he can already be seen there.

The plot of the film is based on the comic book God Loves, Man Kills , albeit with one noticeable deviation: in the original comic book, William Stryker is not an unscrupulous military man, but a fanatical evangelical Christian preacher. In order not to hurt the audience's religious feelings, the film studio decided to make this change.

criticism

"Fast-paced comic strip film adaptation with a heart - far superior to its predecessor."

“More popcorn entertainment, action and spectacular special effects, less soap opera appeal and pathos quotient, but without falling into the minus IQ spheres of other comic adaptations of the kind of“ Daredevil ”- Bryan Singer's conception went completely off."

- filmstarts.de

“The straightforwardly told superhero story is staged more convincingly than its predecessor and works perfectly as an entertainment cinema. Of some interest as a liberal mythology about postmodern identity, tolerance and the freedom of the individual. "
