The film tells the story of Freddie Mercury from forming the band Queen to appearing on Live Aid six years before his death. The film was released on October 31, 2018 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. At the Golden Globe Awards 2019 , Bohemian Rhapsody was recognized as best film drama and Rami Malek as best leading actor . At the 2019 Academy Awards , the film won four Academy Awards, including Malek as best actor . With gross revenues of $ 903.7 million worldwide, the film is the most financially successful film biography to date.

action

The music-loving design student Farrokh Bulsara, known by everyone as Freddie, joined the band Smile as a singer in 1970 . The audience is enthusiastic about Bulsara's singing, his extravagant appearance and his bold clothing style. Mary Austin, a fan of the first hour, begins a relationship with Bulsara, who now calls himself Mercury. The band is now called Queen and records their first songs in a studio. The experienced music manager John Reid , who likes the experimental character of the band, signs Queen.

The band became popular through appearances on the BBC and a concert tour of Japan and the USA. Mercury, who was engaged to Austin before the tour, is now drawn to men. Back at home, the musicians start recording the album A Night at the Opera . At first, producer Ray Foster does not want to accept her plan to play operatic rock music. Only through persuasion from Reid and the band's lawyer, Foster approves the album.

The band retires to a farm for production. Since she is under considerable pressure to succeed, her nerves are on edge and friction often occurs. The recording of the piece Bohemian Rhapsody turns out to be particularly elaborate, but although the band considers it a masterpiece, Foster initially rejects the song as a single release, as it is not suitable for radio with a length of six minutes, the text is confused and the title bulky . In the dispute about which song should be released, the collaboration with Foster ends.

After returning from a world tour with Queen, he and Mary Austin break their engagement because while he thinks he's bisexual she's sure he's gay . The two remained close friends throughout their lives.

In the years that followed, Mercury lived out his fondness for excessive parties, drug use and changing partnerships. Both friendships with Austin and his colleagues and productive studio work suffer as a result. Mercury finds his adopted home in Munich, where the band makes a few recordings. He dives into the gay party and leather scene , which among other things leads to numerous rumors in the tabloid press . A press conference turns into something of a cross-examination of Mercury's sex life. He now feels sick for the first time.

He begins to doubt Queen, but is so appalled by Reid's offer for a solo contract that he fires the manager. He later accepts the offer, which his bandmates disagree with. While Mercury is also working on his solo albums in Munich, his assistant and lover Paul Prenter is now isolating him from old connections; so he does not forward inquiries whether Queen would like to appear at Bob Geldof's charity concert Live Aid .

One day, Mary Austin stands at his door and asks him to come back to London and resume his old life with Queen. She also mentions the offer to appear on Live Aid . Then he realizes that Prenter is not good for him, that his present life is destroying him and that he wants to be on stage again with Queen. He breaks with Prenter, returns to his homeland, is reconciled with the band and they decide to perform at Live Aid despite a lack of match practice .

At that time, Mercury was diagnosed with HIV . He communicates this to the band and also his decision to be on stage as long as possible. He does not want to be treated as a pitiful AIDS victim. Now he ends his wild lifestyle for good, starts a relationship with Jim Hutton, who is not part of the music business, and introduces him to his conservative family as his boyfriend, so they come out and they accept his homosexuality. Despite fewer rehearsals, the band surpasses itself and their performance on Live Aid is acclaimed worldwide.

production

Historical background

The film covers a period of 15 years; from the formation of the band in 1970 to the Live Aid concert in July 1985. Like Rolling Stone and E! turned out, numerous scenes and details shown in the film deviate from the historical reality, for example the band came together in a different way. Various songs and their creation are arranged incorrectly in terms of time. Contrary to what the film suggests, Mercury's solo projects did not cause controversy within the band, as other band members had also previously released solo albums. In addition, the band was never separated, but always active and toured until eight weeks before the Live Aid appearance, which is portrayed in the film as the reunification of the band.

The figure of EMI boss Ray Foster is fictional and loosely based on the real label boss Roy Featherstone, who, unlike in the film, was a Queen fan. Jim Hutton wasn't a waiter, he was a hairdresser whom Mercury met in a nightclub. The timing at which Mercury informed the band about his illness is controversial.

development

The actors Joseph Mazzello , Rami Malek and Gwilym Lee in conversation with MTV

The film was announced back in 2010; since then, both the production team and the cast have changed. According to Brian May , Sacha Baron Cohen was initially slated for the role of Freddie Mercury, but he left the project in 2011 due to artistic differences. Ben Whishaw was in the meantime as a Mercury actor in conversation. Ultimately, Rami Malek was selected for the role.

In November 2015, Anthony McCarten joined the project, which now bore the working title Bohemian Rhapsody , named after the band 's song of the same name . Pre-production began in England in July 2017, with additional cast members announced in August. Ben Hardy plays Mercury's colleague Roger Taylor , Gwilym Lee played Brian May, and Joseph Mazzello played bassist John Deacon .

Newton Thomas Sigel acted as cameraman . Director Bryan Singer has been replaced by Dexter Fletcher. An exact replica of the Live Aid stage was built for the shooting . Furthermore Brian May is said to have contributed some original costumes from the '70s and' 80s.

Soundtrack

The duet by Freddie Mercury and Brian May in Love of My Life comes from the Rock in Rio festival in 1985

The soundtrack, which consists almost entirely of original recordings, features some of Queen's greatest hits, including all eleven tracks that reached number one on the charts. The soundtrack was produced by Brian May and Roger Taylor, who were assisted in their work by longtime Queen Studio staff Justin Shirley-Smith , Kris Fredriksson and Joshua J. Macrae . The recordings were mastered by Adam Ayan and Bob Ludwig .

The main job of the team behind the soundtrack was to find the most appropriate versions of the band's songs to match the plot of the script, especially during the live performances. Based on these recordings, the main actor Rami Malek was able to rehearse not only the singing, but also facial expressions and posture. While Malek had sung himself during the filming, the soundalike was used in post-production .

The version of the famous "Fox Fanfare" by 20th Century Fox , which was specially arranged for the film, goes back to an idea by Brian May. While the songs can only be heard in part in the film, the soundtrack contains the complete versions. It comprises 21 tracks and was released on CD and as download by Virgin Records on October 19, 2018.

publication

The first trailer was presented at CinemaCon in April 2018. The first official trailer was released on May 15, 2018. The second trailer followed on July 17th.

The film premiered on October 23, 2018 at London's Wembley Arena , which is directly opposite Wembley Stadium , where Queen played their show at the 1985 Live Aid concert. It started on October 31, 2018 in Germany, Switzerland and Austria and on November 2, 2018 in the USA. From January 11, 2019, a “sing-along version” of the film was shown in over 750 North American cinemas, in which cinema-goers could sing along to the songs themselves using the lyrics displayed on the big screen. Fox announced that it would release the film in China on March 22, 2019, despite the fact that the local censors "deal strictly with the representation or suggestion of homosexuality". A kissing scene between Mercury and Prenter, the conversation about Mercury's sexuality, Mercury and Hutton's first meeting, as well as some intimate scenes between them and the reenactment of the song I Want to Break Free were cut out.

The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 14, 2019 . In addition to short documentary films about the making of the film, there is also a 22-minute version of the full Live Aid appearance including the songs We Will Rock You and Crazy Little Thing Called Love . In Germany, Bohemian Rhapsody became the best-selling DVD in the first three quarters of 2019.

reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany it was approved by the FSK from the age of 6. The statement of reasons for approval states: “The film is colorful, has a positive mood and focuses on a positive main character. Children from the age of 6 can follow the story well, even if they probably will not understand all the plot details. ”The reasoning goes on to say that the consumption of alcohol and drugs is only discussed in short scenes and is not glorified in any way, as is vulgar language only appear very occasionally.

Reviews

The film was rated positively by 61% of the critics recorded by Rotten Tomatoes and received 49 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic . (As of February 1, 2019)

In December 2017, Bohemian Rhapsody was put on Variety's list of the 20 most anticipated films of the 2018 cinema year by film critic Owen Gleiberman .

Steve Rose of the Guardian found that, aside from Rami Malek's excellent performance, the film was not a groundbreaking musical odyssey . When trying to make him look like the artist with his famous overbite with dentures , he looks more like a character from the Simpsons . But with the mustache of the late 1970s, he really grew into the role. A masterpiece is Malek's portrayal of the famous Live Aid performance. With a view to the youth clearance, the staging of his time in Munich would not depict excesses, but only hinted at a few kisses and hidden references to his wild party life. “A bolder film” could have explored the interrelationship between Mercury's hedonism , his mostly hidden sexuality, and both real and stage personality in a more differentiated manner.

Manfred Riepe from epd Film writes that we don't learn much about the singer himself, Farrokh Bulsara, who was born in Zanzibar in 1946 , and the later years before his death, as well as his relationship with Barbara Valentin , are ignored. Why this film still moves to tears may be due to the fact that Freddie Mercury is not being brought down from the pop Olympus.

Stephan Rehm Rozanes from Musikexpress says that only with the original pictures of Mercury shown in the credits do you become aware again that you have just watched an actor, a very talented and awesome one. Mercury does not die in the film, but he already knows about his AIDS illness and shares his secret with his colleagues. According to his long-term partner Jim Hutton, the fact that this happened before the 21 history-writing minutes at Wembley Stadium in 1985 was incorrect, as he did not receive the diagnosis until April 1987. In general, the film condenses strongly.

Rolling Stone's Sassan Niasseri thinks that Bohemian Rhapsody is skidded in the chronology of events. At the same time, the film is also a courageous statement in the turmoil of its hero. In addition, it offers, which is fundamental for a music film , an extremely good-sounding narrative sound. “We hear all the important songs in just two hours, and the movements of the four Queen actors are very close to the originals. Malek moves his lips to the playback of Mercury and the imitator Marc Martel , that was known, but he also moves well - pointed, but without exaggeration. Above all, Gwilym Lee exceeds all expectations, has appropriated the look and habit of Brian May in a way that perhaps no actor has ever achieved with any musician. "

Use in school lessons

The online portal kinofenster.de recommends the film for the subjects of music, English, social studies and art and offers materials for the film for teaching purposes. There, writes Hannes Wesselkämper, following the means of the musical, working out the film in music lessons could focus on the orchestration of various emotions. On the basis of the lavishly staged performances and rehearsals of the band, it is advisable to examine the mood of the songs with the students in their connection with the cinematic narration. In addition, the texts of some songs could be interpreted in English lessons in order to analyze their staging from this point of view. The representation of Mercury's disease can be critically questioned in social studies classes based on sources and experience reports from the 1980s. In this way, the students could counter the exaggerated connection between the homosexual community and the deadly disease with a self-developed, well-founded picture.

Gross profit

After its start at the beginning of November 2018, Bohemian Rhapsody reached number 1 in the cinema charts and number 1 in the USA, Germany, France and Great Britain, among others. Worldwide revenue from cinema screenings is $ 903.7 million, making it the most financially successful music biography of all time and the most successful in the United States with revenues of $ 216.43 million. The film is number 6 among the most successful films of 2018 and number 61 in the list of the world's most successful films of all time (as of August 8, 2020). The Daily Express estimates that Brian May , Roger Taylor and John Deacon will each receive up to £ 70 million, Mary Austin over £ 50 million and Mercury's sister Kasmira Bulsara up to £ 17.5 million from the proceeds.

In Germany, the film recorded 3.8 million visitors with an income of 33.8 million euros (as of November 10, 2019). He is now number 2 in the 2018 annual charts . The film was also extremely successful in the Czech Republic, where it is the most successful foreign film of all time and is in second place overall.
