Thomas Anthony "Tom" Hollander (born August 25, 1967 in Oxford , England ) is a British actor .

Life

Tom Hollander initially played theater until he came to film and television. Among other things, he was with his roles in Enigma - The Secret (2001), Pride and Prejudice (2005) and in the two sequels of the pirate film Pirates of the Caribbean , Pirates of the Caribbean - Curse of the Caribbean 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean - At the end known to the world as a character actor. He also played in 2004, also at the side of Johnny Depp , in The Libertine . He shot several times with Bill Nighy , Michael Gambon , Jack Davenport , Keira Knightley and their former partner Rupert Friend .

According to Hollander, he wasn't particularly popular in school for the first few years. Together with his sandpit friend Sam Mendes (ex-husband of Kate Winslet and director of American Beauty ) he studied English at Cambridge University . Mendes directed many of the plays there, in which Hollander starred. When he was unable to get a job at a drama school after graduating, he accepted Mendes' offer in 1994 to take part in his production of the Threepenny Opera in his Donmar Warehouse theater . That was his entry into professional acting. Since then he has appeared in many plays in England (often in the Donmar Warehouse) and also on Broadway in leading and supporting roles. He often took on the role of the villain. On the side he also played in a few films, where he often took on small supporting roles.

Hollander was a member of the National Youth Theater as a child and is good friends with James Purefoy ( Kreuz und Queer , Maybe Baby ). Today he lives in the London borough of Notting Hill . In the German version of his films he is mostly dubbed by Axel Malzacher .

Awards

In 1992 he received the Ian Charleson Award for his performance in Way of the World , which was then performed at the Lyric Theater in Hammersmith . Together with the entire cast, he received the Screen Actors Guild Award in 2002 for the overall performance of the ensemble in Gosford Park . In 2005 he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Libertine at the British Independent Film Awards , but came away empty-handed. In 2006 he received the London Critics' Circle Film Award for Best Supporting Role in Pride and Prejudice . In the same year he received the Peter Sellers Award for Comedy for this role.
