William Francis "Bill" Nighy [ naɪ ] (born December 12, 1949 in Caterham , Great Britain ) is a British actor . Among other things, it was awarded a Golden Globe .

life and career

Nighy originally wanted to become a journalist after graduating from school , but could not show the necessary qualifications. Instead, he initially hired himself as a mail carrier. After a stay in France, he began training at the Guildford School of Dance and Drama and initially worked at the theater (including the Royal National Theater ). He has been considered one of the great stage actors in the British Isles for years. The 1.88 m tall actor is a popular speaker for radio plays due to his dark, well-modulated voice; he played for example Sam Gamgee in the BBC radio production of The Lord of the Rings .

Nighy began his theater career as an assistant director at the Watermill Theater in Newbury , where he made his stage debut in Neil Simon's play Plaza Suite in 1969 . In 1993 he played the role of Tom Nightinggale in the world premiere of Tom Stoppard's play Arcadia at the Lyttelton Theater, RNT , directed by Trevor Nunn . In 1996/97 he played the role of Tom Sergeant in David Hare's play Skylight at London's Vaudeville Theater alongside Stella Gonet . It was Nighy's first lead role on stage, directed by Richard Eyre . In 2015 there was a new production of the play at Wyndham's Theater . After 20 years, Nighy returned to play Tom Sergeant, Carey Mulligan the female lead and Stephen Daldry directed. The play was broadcast live in a number of English cinemas as part of the National Theater Live series. Then it went to Broadway (John Golden Theater) with the same cast . The production won a Tony for Best Revival of a Play and six other Tony nominations, including Bill Nighy for Best Male Actor.

His acting career began in 1981 with a supporting role in Ken Follett's film adaptation of The Needle , but his international breakthrough came in his mid-fifties with the portrayal of aging rock star Billy Mack in Actually Love . He was already a well-booked actor in the UK at the time, but it was only now that Hollywood began to notice him.

He then embodied the world designer Slartibartfaß in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy . He also played in the second and third part of Pirates of the Caribbean the evil pirate Davy Jones and Underworld , Underworld: Evolution and Underworld - Rise of the Lycans the Vampire Counts Viktor and in Shaun of the Dead the stepfather Philip the protagonist Shaun and Hot Fuzz a London Chief Inspector . In 2009 he was seen as the head of a chaotic pirate radio station crew on Radio Rock Revolution . In 2010 he played Rufus Scrimgeour in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 .

Bill Nighy has a daughter with actress Diana Quick , whom he met in 1981 and before whom he separated in 2008. Her daughter Mary Nighy (* 1984) is also an actress.

Due to the connective tissue disease Dupuytren's disease , Bill Nighy can no longer use the small and ring fingers of both hands.
