Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is a 2010 British-American fantasy film directed by David Yates . The script was written by Steve Kloves based on the first 23 chapters of the novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by author JK Rowling .

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 is the seventh and penultimate part of the Harry Potter film series . In 2011 the sequel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 was released.

action

Harry's uncle Vernon , his aunt Petunia and his cousin Dudley leave their house on Privet Drive because they are no longer safe there. Hermione uses magic to erase her parents' memories of her just before she leaves home. Now her parents believe they never had a daughter. She arrives a little later with some members of the Order of the Phoenix at the Dursley's house to escort Harry to the Weasley's Burrow . At a meeting of the Death Eaters in the Malfoy mansion , Severus Snape informs Lord Voldemort of the timing of Harry's departure. To confuse the Death Eaters, six wizards take on Harry's appearance with a polyjuice potion . One of Harry's doubles is then on the way to the Weasley's house with an accompanying person on different routes. The real Harry, who is accompanied by Hagrid, loses his disguise when his snowy owl Hedwig stands in the way of a Death Eater attack on Harry and is killed. Then Lord Voldemort takes up the chase, but his killing curse is intercepted by Harry's wand. Harry and Hagrid can dive into the sanctuary around the burrow just in time. Mad-Eye Moody does not survive the trip, his companion Mundungus disapparates and George Weasley loses an ear.

In the Burrow Harry receives a visit from the new Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour , who reads him the will of Albus Dumbledores . Dumbledore bequeathed Harry the golden snitch he caught at his first Quidditch game, Ron his deluminator and Hermione the book The Fairy Tales of Beedle the Bard . The three of them don't know what to do with the objects for the time being. Scrimgeour denied Harry the sword of Godric Gryffindor, also inherited by will, with the claim that it was not Dumbledore's property. In addition, it has disappeared and cannot be found.

At the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour , Harry chats with Muriel and Elphias Doge, a childhood friend of Dumbledore, and learns for the first time from Dumbledore's brother Aberforth and realizes that he barely knew his late mentor. The celebration comes to an abrupt end when a projection from Kingsley Shacklebolt announces that the Ministry has fallen, Minister of Magic Scrimgeour is dead, and the Death Eaters are about to arrive. Harry, Hermione and Ron Apparate to Shaftesbury Avenue in London and flee to a pub where they are attacked by two Death Eaters. They find a hiding place in Grimmauldplatz 12 . Here they discover that the mysterious "RAB" who stole the horcrux in the form of a medallion from the cave was Sirius Black's brother Regulus Arcturus Black . As they learn shortly afterwards, the real Horcrux is now in Dolores Umbridge's possession . To get the medallion back, they use the Polyjuice Potion to get into the Ministry of Magic. They steal the Horcrux, flee from Death Eaters and end up in a forest. This begins their constant flight through Great Britain, during which they always carry the seemingly indestructible Horcrux with them. It turns out that this has a negative influence on the mood of its wearer, so that Ron leaves the other two one day after an argument.

Hermione and Harry visit the grave of Harry's parents in Godric's Hollow and meet there the old historian Bathilda Bagshot, who knew Dumbledore. As it turns out, however, the woman has been dead for weeks and Voldemort's snake Nagini has nested in her body. At the last second, Hermione can save herself and Harry from the snake; in her defense spell, Harry's wand is destroyed.

In the forest Forest of Dean , Harry discovers a Patronus doe which leads him to a frozen lake during a vigil. At the bottom of the lake he sees the sword of Gryffindor. While trying to retrieve the sword, Harry almost drowns and is saved at the last moment by the returning Ron. Then Ron destroys the Horcrux with the sword and is accepted back into the group despite tensions with Hermione. The only further trace of their search for Horcruxes see the three in an inexplicable symbol that appears in the book The Tales of Beedle the Bard , given to Hermione by Dumbledore, and which leads them to Luna Lovegood's father Xenophilius Lovegood . He explains to them that this is the symbol of the Deathly Hallows , and points out the three brothers ' fairy tale, which can be found in Hermione's storybook. The story tells of three brothers who received three powerful objects from death personally: the Elder Wand (the most powerful wand in the world), the Resurrection Stone and the Invisibility Cloak . Before Harry, Hermione and Ron can think about it, Death Eaters arrive at Lovegood's house. Mr. Lovegood betrayed the three in order to rescue his daughter Luna from the clutches of Voldemort's Death Eaters. On their renewed escape, they are captured by a group of bounty hunters, so-called "grabbers", and taken to the Malfoys mansion.

At the Malfoys' house, their luggage is searched, including Gryffindor's sword. When Bellatrix Lestrange realizes the sword that was supposed to be in her dungeon in Gringott's wizarding bank , she interrogates Hermione under torture while Ron and Harry are locked in the mansion's basement. There they meet Luna Lovegood, the wand maker Mr. Ollivander and the goblin Griphook . Harry sees an eye in a shard of his magical two-way mirror that Sirius Black once gave him and asks for help. Shortly afterwards the house elf Dobby appears and allows the other prisoners to escape from the cellar. Ron and Harry free Hermione, with Ron disarming Bellatrix and Harry catching her wand. Harry disarms Draco Malfoy. Dobby Apparates them to Shell Cottage on the beach. However, a knife thrown by Bellatrix wounds him so badly that he dies in Harry's arms. Harry buries the house-elf without magic.

In the last scene, which can also be seen at the beginning of the second part , Voldemort breaks open the grave of Albus Dumbledore on an island in the lake near Hogwarts, takes the elder wand from the dead man's hands and shoots a beam of light into the sky .

production

Since the film was shot together with Part 2, this section covers both parts.

The idea of making a two-part film out of a Harry Potter novel was already up for debate in the 4th Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire , but was rejected again. In 2007 the division of the seventh part was discussed. After the 2008 Writers Guild of America strike ended, producer David Heyman and writers Steve Kloves (screenplay) and Joanne K. Rowling (based on novel) agreed to split Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in two .

Before the official decision to appoint David Yates to direct the two-part film, others also expressed an interest in the task, including Alfonso Cuarón (director of the third part, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ) and Guillermo del Toro , whose bid to direct the third Part had failed at the time. However, the latter withdrew his application due to the high workload involved in producing the film The Hobbit .

Heyman noted that due to the length of the last part, closer work would be done on the novel than in previous films. Daniel Radcliffe says in an interview that the first part in particular is a road movie .

While rehearsing for a stunt at Leavesden Film Studios , Daniel Radcliffe's stunt double David Holmes sustained a serious spinal injury. Holmes has been paraplegic ever since.

Nick Moran , who embodies the grabber Scabior, confirmed in an interview that some of the scenes in which he plays will not appear in the film. The producer Heyman decided this because some scenes would have reminded him of the horror thriller Saw . This suggests that some scenes are too dark and have been cut due to the upcoming review of the age rating .

Filming began on February 19, 2009 and ended on June 12, 2010, during which time both Part 1 and Part 2 were filmed.

Implementation in 3D

After the announcement that the first part would be released in 2D and 3D cinemas, Warner Bros. announced on October 9, 2010 that this would not be possible due to a lack of time to guarantee the best possible quality in post-production. So "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" only came to the cinema as a 2D film. However, it was announced that the second part would appear in both 2D and 3D as planned, due to the longer post-processing time, so that a good quality of the 3D version could be expected. However, a 3D conversion of the first part later appeared on Blu-ray.

Film music

For the composition of the film music director Yates wanted to hire the composer Nicholas Hooper , who already wrote the music for the two previous films Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince . However, Hooper did not accept the offer. In January 2010 it was announced that Alexandre Desplat will compose the music for Part One. Desplat said in an interview that he would compose and record all summer.

“I would take any opportunity to take advantage of the fabulous tune written by John Williams. I'd say it hasn't been used enough in the last few films. So if I have the opportunity, and if the footage allows me, I will arrange it and give the melody a new meaning. "

- Alexandre Desplat in an interview with Cinezik

Desplat, like his predecessors , is using Hedwig's Theme written by the American composer John Williams , which is associated with Harry Potter films around the world.
