Voldemort: Origins of the Heir (in German: "Origin of the Heir") is an unofficial prequel for the film series " Harry Potter ". The film was directed by Gianmaria Pezzato and Stefano Prestia and funded through a crowdfunding campaign; it is 52 minutes long. The duo operates under the name "Tryangle Films". After a legal dispute with the attorneys from Warner , the rights holder of the Harry Potter series, the crowdfunding campaign had to be discontinued. However, since the producers are not looking for financial profit, an agreement was reached with Warner according to their own statements, which resulted in the approval of the film. The film was then uploaded to the Tryangle Films YouTube channel on January 13, 2018 .

background

According to the company, the idea for the prequel arose from reading the book Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince . The aim of the film is to answer the question of how Tom Riddle became the "darkest of all magicians", Lord Voldemort .

Since the film is supposed to play closer to the book than to the film series, Voldemort has red eyes in "Origins of the Heir".

Production and Financing

The film was financed through a crowdfunding campaign on the Kickstarter platform , which started in the summer of 2016 and had to be discontinued after a legal dispute with the rights holder of the Harry Potter film series.

Overall, the film had a budget of around € 15,000.

After the dispute with Warner was resolved, Tryangle Films released the first trailer along with the announcement that it would release the film in late 2017. Within 48 hours of posting on Facebook, the trailer was viewed over 30 million times. The final trailer, which was only published on YouTube in mid-December 2017, achieved 1.3 million clicks by far less than the first.

action

The film is about the youth of Voldemort, who was then still called Tom Riddle. At the center of the plot is a mysterious series of murders in which a house elf and Hufflepuff heiress Hepzibah Smith are involved. After Tom Riddle quit his job at "Borgin & Burke's" and has since disappeared without a trace, the young invented Gryffindor heiress Grisha McLaggen believes in his guilt for death and decides to go on the hunt for Riddle.

Detailed storyline

As a flashback, Tom Riddle is shown packing his bags and preparing to leave his house. Meanwhile, he takes a break from taking a photo of himself and three other students before leaving. At the present, Grisha McLaggen attempts to break into a Soviet Auror warehouse, but despite the beating, many of the guards are captured and fed an intravenous drop of Veritaserum while questioned by General Makarov. In a mixture of flashbacks and the present, a Soviet recon team finds a chest full of dark objects, including Tom Riddle's diary, which are killed soon after opening. In the warehouse, Grisha explains that she was a student at Riddle at Hogwarts, who along with Wiglaf Sigurdsson and Lazarus Smith were the true heirs of Hogwarts founders Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. They formed a club that "should make the world a better place", but after an argument between Lazarus and Tom over Grisha's affection they dropped out and Grischa noticed that Tom was distanced for all of them. Over the past few years, Grisha has become an Auror, devoting herself to tracking down Tom, believing that she can save him from himself and the dark path.

With further queries and flashbacks, it shows how Tom stole Hufflepuff's mug and Slytherin's locket from Hepzibah Smith before he killed her and framed her house-elf Hokey, and that Grischa believes he wants to create Horcuxes. She thinks Tom's diary - the artifact she was trying to get from the warehouse - will give her a clue as to Tom's whereabouts or his intentions. She also explains that Tom has since killed both Lazarus and Wiglaf and it means that he has already taken and started the name "Voldemort" instead of Tom Riddle.

After careful consideration, Makarov says that he believes her story because she was under the influence of Veritaserum when she told it - and only because she believes it doesn't really mean it is, and she could be wrong. He is unwilling to take the risk, however, as the Grindelwald threat is still a memory, and gives her the diary saying "it's a Brit problem" and that they should deal with it. Grisha is released, given her personal effects and allowed to leave.

As she leaves, Makarov asks her how she knew they had the diary, and Grisha replies, "I didn't - or maybe I did ..." before turning into Voldemort and killing Makarov and his assembled guards.

The film ends with a look back at a second scout team that finds the chest and regains it. The two Soviets discuss the content and mention that the bones are feminine (the implication is that they are grishas) and what they mean, with a grim conclusion that there must be darkness in order for there to be light.

reception

criticism

After the publication, but also before, newspapers and film portals worldwide reported on the film.

Post-release reviews have been mixed, but critics are thrilled that despite such a small budget, a professional result has been achieved.

In the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), Voldemort: Origins of the Heir received an average of 5.2 / 10 points from viewers.

“(...) elaborately produced and staged with great attention to detail. The sets, costumes and camera work are particularly impressive. The dialogues (...) and the drama are again quite bumpy in places. One can certainly forgive that in a fan project. "

- Michael Förtsch : Wired Germany

"Voldemort '(...) did not turn out to be a perfect film, of course - at times it still looks like a' Potter 'clone. The rich, dark colors and the steampunk aesthetic are particularly reminiscent of the early 'Potter' films - as is the attention to detail.

Despite the limited travel budget, 'Voldemort' has impressive backdrops to offer (...) and screenwriter Pezzato used JK Rowling not only cheekily, but also skillfully. His Riddle story fits pretty seamlessly into the 'Harry Potter' flashbacks (…) It doesn't matter (or little) that the dialogues are sometimes too long, mostly too pathetic and always humorless; And it doesn't matter (or fun) that the synchronization of the originally Italian dialogues went quite wrong. "

- Wieland Freund : The world

“Of course this is not a Hollywood production, you have to compromise on the extremely dramatic and over-present soundtrack and the theatrical acting. But the effects are impressive and the team put a lot of love into the costumes and sets. (…) The plot is coherent too, Pezzato and Presti skilfully interweave storylines they invented with those from the original template.

For fans this loving film is a small, but real blast. "

- Julia Brummert : Intro

"Fans were sent into a frenzy following the film's release on Sunday - although it received very mixed reviews on Twitter.

The short film no doubt satisfied the cravings of Harry Potter super fans. "
