history

Before the announcement

Since the end of the 1990s, Universal had been considering building an attraction about Harry Potter in one of the amusement parks belonging to the film company. At that time, however, the rights to Harry Potter were held by competitor Time Warner . This was built in 2001 in the Warner Bros. Movie World in Australia run business called "Harry Potter Movie Magic Experience", which was pulled down again after only two years of operation.

Rumors and announcement

In January, the About.com website reported that it had learned from a "credible source" that the Lost Continent theme in the Islands of Adventure was being redesigned as "the stories and characters of one of the most popular brands for children". In the days that followed, other media reported that, under the code name “Project Strong Arm”, based on the Kuka Robocoaster that would be used , a subject area about Harry Potter was being planned. On May 31, 2007, Universal, in cooperation with Warner Bros., officially announced the eight-acre themed area, which will include a replica of Hogwarts Castle , the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade and is expected to open in 2009.

Islands of Adventure

Seven months after the official announcement, construction of the themed area in the Islands of Adventure began. In July, the Flying Unicorn roller coaster and the Enchanted Oak Tavern restaurant were closed. In the course of the renovation , the Flying Unicorn roller coaster was changed to Flight of the Hippogriff . The Enchanted Oak Tavern was later demolished. In order to restrict the park operations as little as possible during the construction work, a bridge was built that connected the themed areas The Lost Continent and Jurassic Park so that visitors did not have to cross the construction site. In September 2008, access to the waiting area of the Dueling Dragons roller coaster was moved to the Jurassic Park themed area to make way for the construction of Hogsmeade. A month later the old entrance was demolished. In September 2009 the roof structure of Hogwarts Castle was completed. In the spring, Universal expanded its marketing campaign for the subject area, placing ads in newspapers, running commercials on television and hanging up posters. Before the Dueling Dragons was transformed into Dragon Challenge , the track was closed for maintenance for some time. The subject area was finally completed on June 1, 2010.

On May 28 and 29, 2010, a soft opening was held for media representatives and invited guests. An opening ceremony took place on June 16 and 18. The first was reserved for the actors and those involved in the Harry Potter films, Potter creator Joanne K. Rowling , officials of the Universal Orlando Resort and media representatives. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was officially opened to the public with the second opening ceremony on June 18 . Numerous actors from the films were present, including Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint . The NBC transferred in their mission Today live from the park.

According to Jason Garcia, editor of the Orlando Sentinel , Universal Orlando Resort's board of directors was considering how to broaden the themed area while keeping visitor numbers at the two parks balanced. In April 2011, speculated Brady MacDonald from the Los Angeles Times that the expansion of the Wizarding World with a Diagon Alley and the magic bank Gringotts themed dark ride the topic Lost Continent could replace in the Islands of Adventure.

A replica of the Hogwarts Express will be built on the site, which will transport visitors back and forth between the two parks.

Shortly after the closure of Jaws , the attraction and its related themed area were demolished. After the site had been leveled, construction began on the first buildings. On May 8, 2013 Universal published further details on the expansion of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter . The expansion with the full name "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley" will mainly take place in the neighboring Universal Studios Florida and will include a replica of Diagon Alley and London . The connection of the two parks with the Hogwarts Express has also been officially confirmed. The expansion is expected to open in 2014.

On January 23, the name of the main attraction was announced: In the roller coaster "Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts", visitors will be able to explore the Gringotts wizard's bank located in Diagon Alley . It was also published that to use the Hogwarts Express, which would connect the Harry Potter themed areas of the two theme parks, the more expensive combination ticket for both parks had to be purchased.

The official opening date was announced on June 17, 2014. On July 3rd, five days before the official opening, a soft opening was held, during which the new subject area was tested under real conditions.
