StarKid Productions
StarKid Productions , known as Team StarKid , is a Chicago- based American theater company founded in 2009 by Darren Criss , Nick Lang, Brian Holden, and Matt Lang at the University of Michigan . The troupe stages musicals and comedies with scripts and songs they have written themselves. The stories are mainly inspired by pop culture.
history
StarKid Productions became known worldwide in 2009 with A Very Potter Musical , a parody of the Harry Potter books, which was uploaded in several parts to YouTube and has since been viewed over 100 million times. This was followed by other musicals. The album for the musical Me and My Dick became the first student-produced album to land on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2010 . In the first week, the album was at number 11 on the "Top Cast Albums" charts. Starship achieved a number one placement here in 2011. The album for the SPACE Tour reached number two in 2012, the album for the Apocalyptour number three in the same year. Firebringer was sixth in 2016.
To date, Team Starkid has staged twelve musicals as well as two web series, two live tours, three sketch comedy shows, a live show and a staged reading. In 2008 the play The Hobbit 2: The Lord of the Rings was also produced. While A Very Potter Musical , Me and My Dick and A Very Potter Sequel were still staging in Ann Arbor , Michigan , StarKid Productions presented Starship , Holy Musical Batman! , Twisted , Ani: A Parody , The Trail to Oregon and Firebringer in Chicago . The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals was the group's first musical to be performed in Los Angeles in 2018 , with Black Friday following a year later. A Very Potter Senior Year was staged once at LeakyCon in Chicago in 2012.
The theater group appears regularly at LeakyCon (GeekyCon), a convention of the nerd and geek scene. In addition, they were several times guests at the Ring * Con in Bonn , as well as at various other conventions and music festivals. Team Starkid has uploaded all musicals to YouTube so that they are freely accessible to everyone. The group's Youtube channel has over 600,000 subscribers and more than 270 million views.
