List of locations for the Harry Potter films
This list contains a selection of the locations where the Harry Potter films were filmed . The eight-part film series based on the Harry Potter novels by English writer Joanne K. Rowling was produced under the direction of the US company Warner Bros. in Great Britain and published between 2001 and 2011 . In terms of box office income, it is the second most successful film series ever at over 7.5 billion US dollars (as of August 2015). The studio recordings come from Leavesden Film Studios in Watford in the south of England ; the other locations are mainly in the vicinity of these studios, in the British capital London , its surroundings and in Scotland .
Leavesden Film Studios
All studio recordings come from Leavesden Film Studios, which are around 30 kilometers northwest of London near the English city of Watford. This is where the backdrops for a large part of the interior shoots were set up, for example the Great Hall of the Hogwarts Magic Boarding School , the common room of the Gryffindor schoolhouse or the Ministry of Magic. Some of them are based on real existing places. For example, the Great Hall of Oxford College Christ Church was the inspiration for the Great Hall of Hogwarts.
Some of the other locations were also recreated in the studios. For example, the shots for the exterior views of the house of the Dursleys, Harry's foster parents, in the first film come from the suburb of Martins Heron in the southern English city of Bracknell . A copy of the street was built in the studio for the later films.
In November 2010, Warner acquired the studios in order to produce films there in the future. After the filming of the last Harry Potter film was completed, part of the studio was converted into a museum. The original costumes and sets of the Harry Potter cinema series are to be made available to the public here. The opening was in 2012.
More locations
The following table lists some locations where the films were shot. It is not complete, but only reflects a selection. Places that play a prominent role in one or more films or that appear in several films were taken into account. Places that have not been invented and that appear in the films when the film was shot on the original location are highlighted in light blue.
