Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

In the first film of the series of eccentric Magizoologe visited Newt Scamander the US city of New York . When some magical creatures escape from his weathered suitcase, it causes chaos in the city. Scamander is arrested and taken to MACUSA, the Magical Congress of the United States of America . There, his president Seraphina Picquery asks him to hand over his suitcase. He is shown the incidents for which his escaped animals are responsible, but from his extensive knowledge Scamander quickly realizes that they cannot be to blame for every unusual thing that happens in New York.

Fantastic Beasts: Grindelwald's Crimes

In 1927, a few months after Newt Scamander captured the dark magician Gellert Grindelwald , he managed a sensational escape. Grindelwald tries to gather followers around him who support him in his plans for the good of the magical world, but against non-magicians. The only wizard who could stop him is Albus Dumbledore, whom he once called his dearest friend. To do this, Dumbledore needs support, from Scamander, who had already managed to capture Grindelwald before. The attempt to pose Grindelwald reunites Scamander with Jacob Kowalsky and Tina and Queenie Goldstein.

characters

The spin-off opens up completely new opportunities for the introduction of a number of new characters, who do not attend the Hogwarts School of Magic, but the American School of Wizardry. The first film is almost exclusively about characters that do not appear in the films based on the Harry Potter series. Only Albus Dumbledore plays a role in the second film; the black magician Gellert Grindelwald was shown only briefly in the Harry Potter series. In addition to a range of humans - magicians and non-magicians - and human-like beings such as goblins , Rowling created a number of animal creatures specifically for the film series and accompanying works, which are native to America, Africa, Australia and Asia. Among the beasts there are several with individual names, such as Scamander's Thunderbird Frank , his Demiguise Dougal and the Bowtruckles Pickett , Titus, Jeremy, Marlow and Tom.

Newton Artemis Fido Lurch "Newt" Scamander: The eccentric, well-traveled wizard and specialist in magical animals was born in 1897 as Newton Artemis Fido Scamander, was part of the Hufflepuff family at Hogwarts and knows Albus Dumbledore , who is very fond of him. Scamander is later expelled from school because of the danger to human life from an animal and then travels the world in search of magical animals, always accompanied by a suitcase in need of repair that has a Muggle-compatible lock. At the age of 29 he traveled to New York and met a number of people who not only supported him in his research and hunting for animals, but also played an important role in his later life. His book Magical Beasts emerged from the writings about magical animals collected on his travels , and it became the standard work on magical animals and 70 years later Harry Potter was supposed to read it in school. Scamander is more comfortable with his beasts and creatures than with other people. Newt Scamander is still alive today. The role of Newt Scamander was cast with British Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne .

Jacob Kowalski: A No-Maj (American English for Muggle ) friends of Newt Scamander who accompanies him on his adventures in New York. The optimistic factory worker learns the baking trade and discovers a completely new world after meeting Newt and other magicians. This gives the character a special meaning, which helps the audience to discover new things over and over again in the magical world, since Jacob, like the audience himself, is not a magician, but an outsider in this world who constantly experiences new wonders here. Jan Kowalski, a Polish nobleman, is a relative of Jacob. The role was given to Tony Award winner Dan Fogler .

Porpentina Goldstein: A native of the United States, Newt Scamander met Newt Scamander in New York in 1926, later became his wife and moved to England with him. Porpentina is also a sorceress, is very down to earth and practical. She is called Tina by her friends and family. She is a distant relative of Anthony Goldstein, who belongs to the Ravenclaw family and joins Dumbledore's army in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix . Like her sister Queenie, she attended the American Magic School Ilvermorny. Tina is an ambitious contributor to the United States' Congress of Magic (MACUSA), the counterpart to the English Ministry of Magic. Tina was sentenced to work that was far below her ability after advocating for the wrong person. The role of Scamander's future wife was given to Katherine Waterston .

Queenie Goldstein: Porpentina's younger sister lives with her, is a generous free spirit and an accomplished mind reader . She later becomes Newt Scamander's sister-in-law. The role was cast with singer Alison "A Fine Frenzy" Sudol .

Percival Graves: A wizard Newt Scamander meets while traveling around New York. The influential Auror is the right hand man of Seraphina Picquery , President of the American Wizarding World in the 1920s , and he is the head of the MACUSA's Magical Law Enforcement Division. While Mary Lou Barebone, the fanatical leader of the Second Salemers, is fueling the mood against the New York magical world, Percival Graves tries to track down her adopted son Credence and win him over. Nobody knows of the troubled young man that he is a wizard, but Percival Graves is not who he claims to be either. Percival Graves is a direct descendant of Gondulphus Graves , who was one of the first twelve Aurors that Josiah Jackson recruited. Colin Farrell took on the role .

Credence Barebone: Credence is the mysterious adopted son of Mary Lou , who despises him. Credence is easy to manipulate when he is tracked down in the streets of New York by the auror Percival Graves, who then takes the disturbed young man under his wing. Credence is a very powerful wizard, but by suppressing his magical powers throughout his life, an obscurus developed - a being of dark, uncontrollable energy who terrified the people of New York in 1926. The role was cast with Ezra Miller .

Mary Lou Barebone: The narrow-minded leader of the fanatical Second Salemers , a group that tries to track down and destroy witches and wizards. Mary Lou appears in the election campaign in New York as a demagogue and strives for a politics of divide and rule . Samantha Morton took on the role .

Modesty Barebone: As her name suggests, a modest, witty young girl of particular strength and calm. She has special empathic skills and can look deeply into people and understand them. She is the youngest adoptive child of Mary Lou Barebone and the adoptive sister of Credence and Chastity Barebone. After a casting on July 11, 2015, ten-year-old Faith Wood-Blagrove finally got this role.

Seraphina Picquery: Madam Seraphina Picquery is an extraordinarily talented witch from Savannah and when Newt Scamander traveled to America, she was the president of MACUSA. Carmen Ejogo took on the role .

Gellert Grindelwald: Before Lord Voldemort appeared in the wizarding world, Gellert Grindelwald was notorious as the greatest black magician of all time. The black magician was very close friends with Albus Dumbledore at first. In the 1920s, Gellert Grindelwald made headlines in the international media because of his crimes. It was reported in the New York Ghost that the International Magic Community had intensified its search for Grindelwald. When Newt Scamander is in New York, Seraphina Picquery , President of MACUSA, suspects that the events in the city are also connected to Grindelwald's attacks in Europe. Johnny Depp takes on the role .

Leta Lestrange: Leta Lestrange was Newt Scamander's former love, and she still had some kind of power over him later on. Leta is a tragic figure and a rather complicated person. Zoë Kravitz takes on the role .

Theseus Scamander: Newt Scamander's older brother is a war hero and works as an Auror for the London-based Ministry of Magic. At the beginning of the second film he is engaged to Leta Lestrange, the childhood sweetheart of his younger brother Newt. Callum Turner takes on the role .

Dougal: Scamander's demiguise escaping his suitcase while in New York.

Scamanders Niffler: The Niffler accompanies Newt Scamander on his travels.

production

Emergence

On September 12, 2013, Warner Bros. announced that JK Rowling would make her debut as a screenwriter on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, marking the start of a planned series of productions based on the Harry Potter companion books. The series begins in the 1920s and describes the life of Newt Scamander, a magical book writer who lived 70 years before Harry Potter came to Hogwarts. However, the first film in the planned series should not be a prequel or a sequel to the Harry Potter novel adaptations.

In October 2013, the collaboration of David Heyman became known, who had previously produced all Harry Potter films. However, Daniel Radcliffe announced that he will not play a role in the latest magical adventure.

In October 2014, the studio announced that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was a series of films that would become at least one trilogy . In July 2016 it was announced that Rowling had already completed work on the script for the first part of the sequel. Yates said in September 2016, two months before the premiere of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them , if the story continued, he would already know that America is not necessarily a place to stay. Only the first film in the series is set exclusively in the USA, but the sequels will also develop in other parts of the world.

As part of a fan event on October 13, 2016, Rowling said she was planning a total of five films in the series. As Yates announced at the premiere of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them in New York on November 10, 2016, he will direct all of these films.

At the end of November 2016 Eddie Redmayne revealed that the titles of the sequels should follow a principle similar to the Harry Potter series and that the only thing the titles have in common is that they begin with Fantastic Beasts and the ... With the announcement of the title of the first sequel, this turned out to be wrong. The films each begin with Fantastic Beasts and are given a subtitle that matches the respective film content.

In January 2018, Yates stated that all the films in the planned series should be set in different cities.

occupation

While Eddie Redmayne took on the role of Newt Scamander in the first part of the film series and other important roles were cast with Katherine Waterston , Ezra Miller , Dan Fogler , Alison Sudol and Colin Farrell , Johnny Depp should play a larger role in the second part . As in a cameo in the first part of the film series, Depp will take on the role of Gellert Grindelwald . The role of Leta Lestrange , Newt Scamander's past love, takes on in the second film in the series Zoë Kravitz , the daughter of the musician Lenny Kravitz and the actress Lisa Bonet .

Locations

The shooting of the first film in the series took place between August 2015 and January 2016. The film was shot in Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden (England) and in Liverpool .

Filming for the second film in the series began on July 3, 2017, also at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden.

Accompanying works

In March 2016, Entertainment Weekly announced that Rowling plans to introduce the American wizarding society and its history and institutions in four short stories, entitled The History of Magic in North America , before it hits theaters . These were published from March 8th to March 11th, 2016 on the official Pottermore website and offered here translated into various languages. The short stories deal with the US Department of Magic and the Magical Congress, Ilvermorny, the American equivalent of Hogwarts, the Salem witch trials , and tell the legend of the Native Americans, especially the so-called shapeshifters . The short stories served to prepare the audience for the first part and the other films in the planned film series.

Chris Lough criticizes that Rowling starts her story well and also captivating, but in the further course she has to turn some true historical events upside down and combine them with fiction, which she succeeds well in some places. It convincingly interweaves the Native Americans of the 14th century and shows easily understandable similarities and differences with the European population of the time without adding unnecessary complexity, says Lough. It is easy for the reader to understand that, because of their well-known history, the Native Americans were more willing to incorporate wizards into their community. Nonetheless, Lough also suggests that Native American reactions can be expected when a writer tries to fit human historical heritage into his own fictional world.

Dave Thier of Forbes also generally thinks it's not a bad idea to expand the world of Harry Potter, adapting it to an American context and speaks of an interesting idea to see what happens when you mix British and American cultures. However, after the appearance of the short stories accompanying the film in March 2016, Thier criticized that as a native of England, Rowling did not know the history and culture of the nation she was writing about well enough and was also familiar with the treatment of Indians in America and the events there little familiar during the colonial era and the consequences of segregation . Adrienne Keene expresses her criticism, especially of the first short story, with reference to the use of established clichés and the cultural appropriation of the indigenous peoples by Rowling: It is not 'your' world. It is our (real) world of the indigenous people, in which shapeshifter stories have a context, their roots and a reference to reality.

On April 26, 2016, it was announced that the original script for the opening film would be published on November 19, 2016 on Scholastic and that a digital version would also be made available via Pottermore . The book, which will be officially titled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - The Original Screenplay , should therefore be available as an eBook and in a printed version one day after the premiere of the film and, in addition to the complete script for the film, also a number of imagine magical creatures and characters.

publication

The first film in the series was released in US cinemas on November 18, 2016, and one day earlier in Germany. The second part had its world premiere on November 8, 2018 in Paris. It was released in German cinemas on November 15th, and launched in the USA one day later. Part number three is slated to hit US cinemas three years later, in November 2021. It is not yet known when the fourth and fifth parts of the film series will be released.

reception

Reactions from fans

Before the premiere of the first film, a fan event was held on October 13, 2016, at which some of the actors, the director, Rowling and the producer answered questions in New York and simultaneously in London. Four cities in different countries were connected live to this event, and the guests were also able to ask questions about the film.

Reviews

The opening film in the series has so far won over 74 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics . Erin Whitney from Screencrush says , even if it is difficult to imagine that the beloved hero trio from the Harry Potter films could be topped, show Fantastic Beasts and where they can be found a top quartet of worthy successors, consisting of Newt Scamander , Jakob Kowalski and Tina and Queenie Goldstein, with whom the chemistry is right and who bring drive and magic to the film. Redmayne, according to Whitney, brings his usual shyness to the role of Newt Scamander in a surprisingly delightful way, and Fogler's goofy but lovable-played Jacob is sure to become a fan favorite, who is also at the center of some of the best sequences in the film stand Whitney sums up, Rowling and Yates manage to transport you into a magical world that you no longer want to leave.

Matt Goldberg of Collider says that Jacob, in particular, plays a particularly important role in the first film in the series. After eight Harry Potter films, he helps you keep discovering new things in the magical world. Jacob experiences this world and the magical beasts that live in it with great astonishment, just as Harry Potter had experienced it. The difference, however, is that Jacob, like the viewer himself, is not a magician, but an outsider in this world who experiences these miracles. Malte Mansholt from Stern.de also says that Scamander's No Maj companion facilitates access to the magical world, and it was also a good decision to set the plot in New York in the twenties, so the scenario remains fresh, without anything To throw away acquaintances.

The sequel Fantastic Beasts: Grindelwald's Crimes was only able to convince 37% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes .
