Fantastic Beasts and where to find them (AKA: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ) is a British - American fantasy film by David Yates , the elements from the same book contains that of the author of Harry Potter , novels Joanne K. Rowling , written as a companion work to the novel series. With the film, Rowling made her debut as a screenwriter. The template, originally written as a fictional textbook, thus served as the inspiration for a first offshoot of the Harry Potter film series , which moves in the same film universe. The film is the first part of a planned five-part film series and opened on November 16, 2016 in Austria, the following day in Switzerland and Germany and on November 18 in the USA.

At the 2017 Academy Awards , Colleen Atwood received an award for best costumes.

action

In 1926 the eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander reached New York City by ship. He comes to America with his well-worn suitcase , in which more fits than you might think at first glance. There is a whole collection of rare and dangerous magical creatures that Newt was able to find on his travels around the globe, including a niffler and his bowtruckles . Newt came to America to bring the thunderbird Frank , which he rescued from the clutches of animal traders in Egypt, back to its natural habitat in Arizona . After this he wants to go back to England to finish his book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in which he explains why such beasts should be protected. First, however, the magizoologist made the acquaintance of the American wizarding society, which preferred to hide from non-wizards. In addition, a mysterious being has been leaving a trail of devastation in New York for some time, and some of the population blame the magical community for it. So tried Mary Lou Barebone , as fanatical leader of the Second Salemers the legacy of the Salem witch trials continues to fuel sentiment against the New York magic world. The magician Percival Graves is in contact with her adoptive son Credence , a disturbed young man whom he takes to be a Squib and from whom he hopes to receive clues about a very young witch with strong magical powers.

Shortly after his arrival, Newts Niffler escaped from his suitcase and went on a thief tour at the Steen National Bank . There he meets the no-maj Jacob Kowalski , who gets his hands on Scamander's silver egg from an Occamys . The magizoologist retrieves the egg and recaptures his niffler. When he tries to cast a forgetting spell on Jacob, who has learned of these beasts and the existence of magic through Scamander's actions, the No-Maj knocks him down with the suitcase and disappears. Here he confuses his suitcase with the scamander, who resembles him. Newt is being watched over by Porpentina Goldstein , called Tina, who works for MACUSA, the magical congress of the United States of America . Tina takes Newt there and finds out during a search that he is carrying the wrong suitcase, because Jacob's suitcase only contains pastries. Seraphina Picquery , the President of MACUSA, fears that there could be a war with the No-Majs if they fail to stop the threat posed by the creatures, and she suspects that the events in the city may also involve the Gellert Grindelwalds Attacks in Europe.

Porpentina and Newt go together in search of the No-Maj. When they find him, some animals have escaped from the suitcase and Jacob was bitten by a Murtlap . Newt and Jacob stay with Tina and her sister Queenie Goldstein for the time being, who quickly casts an eye on the No-Maj. The sisters share an apartment in a brownstone at 679 West 24th Street, New York, and both work in the magical world of the city's wand licensing office , where they do menial desk jobs. Tina used to be an Auror herself. The magizoologist shows Jacob the animal beings he is carrying in his trunk, including the last two Graphorns with their young, a Nundu and a herd of moon calves . Together they begin to track down the missing specimens and bring them back to their habitats, which are located inside the suitcase. Jacob helps as much as he can. She catches Newt's Niffler in a jewelry store and the Erumpent lady in Central Park Zoo. Here, too, they are observed by Tina, who brings them to Seraphina Picquery locked in the suitcase. All three are arrested there, and Newt and Tina, accused of negligence, are responsible for the death of New York Senator Henry Shaw, after interrogation by Percival Graves, head of MACUSA's magical law enforcement department, sentenced to death. No one believes Newt that his escaped beasts cannot be responsible for the incidents in the city and Shaw's death. An evil fall butterfly and his bowtruckle Pickett, which the magizoologist always carries with him, help the two to escape execution. The quartet is hoping for useful information and help from the gangster goblin Gnarlak , whom they visit in his speakeasy, The Blind Pig . He wants Newt's Bowtruckle Pickett for his support , but Gnarlak is even more interested in the reward that MACUSA offered Newt and Tina. The goblin calls MACUSA, but the friends can escape again.

After they tracked down Newt's escaped Demiguise Dougal and also captured the last missing animal, an Occamy , and believe they have put everything back in order, Frank signals through his behavior that danger is imminent. This comes from Credence, who has meanwhile killed his adoptive mother and Percival Graves has revealed his enormous magical abilities. While trying to get Credences Obscurus under control in a New York subway station , Tina and Newt are disturbed by Percival Graves and other MACUSA employees and the Obscurus is destroyed. Graves, who is extremely annoyed by this, is unmasked by Newt after a short fight: In reality, he is the black magician Gellert Grindelwald, who is wanted worldwide.

In order to take away the memories of the events of the last few days from the New York population, a forgetting magic is rained on the city. Jacob's memories are also erased, and with them his thoughts of one last kiss from Queenie. As a thank you, however, Newt sends him a suitcase with the valuable Occamy eggshells before he says goodbye to Tina at New York harbor with the promise to bring her a copy of his book. Jacob opens his own bakery. He still seems to have memories of Scamander's beasts, because many of his baked goods are similar to Nifflern, Demiguises and Erumpents. One day Jacob discovers a young woman who looks familiar to him in his shop: Queenie. At this sight a tiny glimmer of memory stirs in him.

characters

Newt Scamander and Gellert Grindelwald are already mentioned in the volumes of the Harry Potter series. Grindelwald also made a brief appearance in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 . In addition to a number of people - magicians and non-magicians - and human-like beings such as goblins , the film features a number of animal creatures that Rowling created especially for the planned film series and for the accompanying works, especially those that were native to America, Africa, Australia and Asia Creatures. Among the beasts there are several with individual names, such as Newts Thunderbird Frank , his Demiguise Dougal and the Bowtruckles Pickett , Titus, Finn, Poppy, Marlow and Tom.

production

History of origin

On September 12, 2013, Warner Bros. announced that JK Rowling would be making her debut as a screenwriter on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, marking the start of a planned series of productions based on the Harry Potter companion books. The series begins in the 1920s and describes the life of Newt Scamander, a magical book writer who lived 70 years before Harry Potter came to Hogwarts. However, the first film in the planned series should not be a prequel or a sequel to the Harry Potter novel adaptations.

In October 2013, the collaboration of David Heyman became known, who had previously produced all Harry Potter films. Daniel Radcliffe announced, however, that he would not play a role in the latest magical adventure. David Yates , who has already acted in this capacity in the last four Harry Potter films, took over the direction . Yates was working on post-production of The Legend of Tarzan , which was also produced by Warner Bros., in parallel with the filming .

In July 2014, Warner Bros. announced that filming would take place at the Warner Brothers studios in Leavesden, England . In October 2014, the studio announced that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was a series of films that would become at least one trilogy . This was confirmed by Rowling in late February 2016. The second part is due to be released in the US on November 16, 2018, two years after the first film. Part number three is scheduled to hit US cinemas again two years later, on November 20, 2020. As part of a fan event on October 13, 2016 in London, it became known that a pentalogy was planned.

Cast and dubbing

After the actors Matt Smith and Nicholas Hoult were initially in discussion for the role of Newt Scamander, the main role was cast in June 2015 with the British Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne . The film's producer, David Heyman, later said Redmayne was the first choice because he was a timeless actor who fitted very well into New York of the 1920s and, as a Brit, could convincingly play the role of England-born Newt Scamander .

The role of Porpentina was given to Katherine Waterston . In July 2015 the cast of Queenie (Porpentina's younger sister) with singer Alison "A Fine Frenzy" Sudol was announced, the role of Jacob was given to the Tony Award winner Dan Fogler . Fogler, who plays a baker who works in New York in the film, says he has a grandfather who actually used to work as a baker on the city's Lower East Side.

The role of Credence Barebone was cast with Ezra Miller . Warner Bros. made an exception for Miller, who had a simultaneous engagement in the film The Flash , for which he was slated to lead. Miller was allowed to play both characters. It was later announced that neither Albus Dumbledore nor Harry Potter nor their actors Michael Gambon and Daniel Radcliffe would be seen in the film.

On July 11, 2015, Warner Bros. cast 20,000 girls for the role of Modesty Barebone at the Excel Center in East London. The role was finally given to ten-year-old Faith Wood-Blagrove .

In August 2015 it was announced that Colin Farrell would slip into the role of the magician Percival Graves. Shortly thereafter, it was rumored that Irish actress Jenn Murray would join the crew, which her agent confirmed shortly afterwards. She will embody Chastity Barebone. In August 2015, the engagement of Samantha Morton , who will take on the role of Mary Lou Barebone, was announced.

In October 2015 it was announced that Ron Perlman will slip into the role of a goblin in the film . It was the role of the goblin gangster Gnarlack. Gemma Chan , Carmen Ejogo as Seraphina and Jon Voight as Henry Shaw senior joined the crew at the same time . At the beginning of November 2016 it was announced that Johnny Depp had taken on the role of Gellert Grindelwald , but can only be seen briefly from behind in a trailer for the film. In the continuation of the film , Depp will then play a bigger role.

After the main cast became known, criticism was raised in August 2015 that the population living in New York in the 1920s was not authentically depicted because all of the seven known actors were white-skinned, but the residents of New York had different skin colors even then. Rowling replied that there won't be only whites in the film.

The German-language dubbing was carried out by FFS Film- & Fernseh-Synchron GmbH based on a dialogue book by Tobias Neumann and directed by Solveig Duda . Timmo Niesner speaks in the German version Newt Scamander, Kathrin Hanak and Yvonne Greitzke lend their voices to the sisters Queenie and Porpentina Goldstein, Thomas Wenke speaks Jacob Kowalski, Florian Halm speaks Percival Graves, Patrick Baehr speaks Credence Barebone, and Caroline Ebner speaks Mary Lou.

Filming and costumes

Filming of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them began in August 2015 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, England and continued through January 2016.

The exterior shots took place exclusively in front of St. George's Hall and the Cunard Buildings on Merseyside in Liverpool The exterior shots took place exclusively in front of St. George's Hall and the Cunard Buildings on Merseyside in Liverpool

at the Merseyside Cunard Building in Liverpool instead

The outdoor shots took place exclusively in Liverpool , as the buildings there, according to producer David Heyman, reflect the flair of New York in the 1920s . The outdoor shots began at St. George's Hall. Further recordings took place in front of and in the Cunard Buildings on Liverpool's Merseyside and in the former Martins Bank building on Liverpool Water Street. The bank's premises, in whose vault a large part of the English gold was stored during the Second World War, served as the backdrop in the Steen National Bank film . The building was completed in 1932 and Martins Bank is considered to be one of the finest neoclassical structures in England. Since the end of filming, it has been converted into a 227-room luxury hotel that is due to open in 2017 or 2018. The suitability of many iconic buildings in Liverpool, such as the Cunard Buildings and Martins Bank, as a backdrop for New York is also due to the fact that they were influenced by American architecture.

At the beginning of November 2015, the first pictures of the film set were published. Filming for Eddie Redmayne ended in late January 2016.

The American costume designer Colleen Atwood designed the costumes. After the first photos of the film were published in the US magazine Entertainment Weekly, Daniel Radcliffe was impressed in an interview with the New Musical Express and joked: Oh f ** k you, Eddie, in this brilliant costume ... I got ten years long jeans and a top with a zipper and you already have a coat? In the film, Newt Scamander, a proud former Hufflepuff student, wears a gold vest and a black bow tie and thus the corporate colors of Hufflepuff.

The equipment of the film was from the production designer Stuart Craig is responsible, who for this work by David Heyman previously and directors for all eight Harry Potter had been committed films.

The interior of the MACUSA is characterized by a heavy use of the color gold, which is intended to illustrate the wealth and power of the government of the American wizarding world. While the film set, which he designed in Leavesden for the great hall of MACUSA, is around 75 meters long and 15 meters high, it was expanded to a room with a ceiling that looks over 200 meters high by post-processing the film recordings which should look like an imposing, brightly lit cathedral, says Craig.

Because it would have been logistically and financially unsustainable, said Craig, to shoot the entire film in the buildings and streets of New York, a number of other film sets were built in Leavesden, including a subway station in the city. Because Craig had not been given access to the City Hall subway station near Broadway in Lower Manhattan , which was part of the New York City Subway from 1904 but was decommissioned in 1945 and has been closed to the public ever since, one had to corresponding film set can be reconstructed on the basis of already available image material.

In Shed 2 of the Cardington Hangars near Bedfordshire, a former Royal Air Force air base, further interior shots were taken in autumn 2015. In the hall operated by Warner Bros. under the name Cardington Studios, inside of which there are steel beams and which is provided with large windows, the film set for the New York entrance building for travelers and immigrants was set up, in which the passengers at the beginning of the film leave the ship and Scamander's suitcase is examined for living animals.

Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima worked as graphic designers . Among other things, they designed the illustration on a wall in a small back alley that serves as a secret entrance to the Blind Pig and is intended to look like a contemporary lipstick advertisement that comes to life when it perceives magic.

The fantastic animal beings seen in the film and pursued by Newt Scamander were completely realized using CGI on the computer. For the design of the Bowtruckles that Newt Scamander keeps as pets in the film, character designers had made 200 drafts, from which they chose the one that can be seen in the film. According to Eddie Redmayne, the Bowtruckles are his favorite animal creature in the movie. A honey badger served as inspiration for Scamander's Niffler . Christian Manz , the film's visual effects supervisor, said, “We looked at some close-ups of a honey badger absolutely voraciously searching someone's house to find something to eat; nothing and nobody would have stood in the way of this. "

Film music and accompanying works

As it became known in early April 2016, James Newton Howard took over the work on the film music. At the beginning of October 2016, the track list of the soundtrack was announced, which includes 17 songs and 9 bonus tracks. The song Blind Pig included on the soundtrack was included in the longlist for Best Movie Song .

In March 2016, Entertainment Weekly announced that Rowling plans to introduce the American wizarding society and its history and institutions in four short stories, entitled The History of Magic in North America , before it hits theaters . These were published from March 8th to March 11th, 2016 on the official Pottermore website and offered here translated into various languages. The short stories are about the US Department of Magic and Magic Congress, Ilvermorny, the American equivalent of Hogwarts, and the Salem witch trials . In addition, the legend of the American natives is told, in particular that of the so-called shapeshifters . The short stories serve to prepare the audience for the first part and the other films in the planned film series .

The original script for the film was published on November 19, 2016 by Scholastic and also made available in a digital version via Pottermore . The book, titled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - The Original Screenplay , was available as an eBook and a printed version the day after the film premiered and featured a number of magical creatures and characters in addition to the full script for the film. After the announcement of a publication of the film script, the pre-order book reached the top of the Waterstones bestseller list , which had previously included Rowling's co-authored book on the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child , also a published script. Details on the book cover of the script for the film, especially its design, became known in autumn 2016. Accordingly, this has a rose gold pattern and consists of letters in the Art Deco style of the 1920s. There is also a Niffler on the cover of the book.

On November 18, 2016, Penguin Random House published the companion book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - Newt Scamander: A Movie Scrapbook, designed by Rick Barba . The book will appear in a number of other languages, including a German translation by Barbara Knesl by Paninia-Verlag with the title Fantastic Animal Beings and Where to Find Them: Newt Scamander - Das Handbuch zum Film .

The day before the film premiered, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment released an interactive mobile game called Fantastic Beasts: Cases From The Wizarding World , a Hidden Objects Game .

For the release of the film, Google announced an application as part of the new Daydream View project , which was launched on November 10, 2016 and a demo version for Fantastic Beasts was presented at the London Comic Con in October 2016. Users can move around in a virtual environment with VR glasses and control a magic wand with the help of a small hand controller. At the cinema release, Google's voice assistant should also be able to give voice commands to smartphones using an app. The Lumos command activates the photo light , and the Nox command turns it off again. Another voice command is Silencio , which mutes the ringing and notification tone.

The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them VR was nominated for the Webby Awards in April 2017 in the category Virtual Reality: Gaming, Interactive, or Real-Time (Film & Video) .

marketing

The first German trailer for the film was released on December 15, 2015, showing Tina Goldstein excitedly delivering a message to MACUSA: Yesterday a magician arrived in New York with a suitcase. A suitcase full of magical creatures. And unfortunately some escaped. In January 2016, a three-minute featurette followed, which also shows comments by the actors and makers of the film and excerpts from the shooting.

As part of the MTV Movie Awards 2016 , Warner Bros. presented a new trailer for the film on April 10, 2016, which, in addition to Scamander's arrival by ship in New York, also shows the wizard during the immigration control there and shows that his suitcase is also open without animal beings to be seen in it, but simply clothing. You also learn that elections are currently taking place in the USA for which a Mister Shaw is running, whose photo can be seen on election posters. Also in April 2016, a 2:13 minute long, first German long trailer was published. There you learn that Scamander was expelled from Hogwarts because of the endangerment of human life by an animal, that he knows Albus Dumbledore and he is very fond of Albus Dumbledore , that his suitcase has a Muggle-compatible lock, but is in need of repair and that one is in can even climb into it.

On June 28, 2016, a featurette was released that uses computer-animated characters to show how the American Magic School Ilvermorny came into being. At the same time, as a continuation of the first four stories about magic in North America, the story Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (original title Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry ) was published on Pottermore, which reports that Ilvermorny was founded by Isolt Sayre and on Mount Greylock can be found.

David Yates hosted a panel at Comic-Con 2016 in July. Also in attendance were actors Eddie Redmayne , Katherine Waterston , Ezra Miller , Dan Fogler , Alison Sudol and Colin Farrell . A number of other beasts were featured in a trailer released at the same time, and MACUSA President Seraphina Picquery issues a warning that if they fail to stop the threat, a war with the No-Majs could ensue. In addition, some goblins integrated into the American magic society are shown in the trailer .

During the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Warner Bros. unveiled a new 55-second trailer for the film on NBC. At the end of September 2016, Warner Bros. Pictures released one final trailer. This shows how Newt Scamander climbs out of his suitcase in front of President Picquery in MACUSA, on the other hand how Jacob Kowalski sinks into it and makes the acquaintance of a couple of Billywigs . One scene shows a group of wizards led by the president who confronts some police officers who are armed with semi-automatic rifles. Furthermore, a display of the MACUSA can be seen, from which the current threat to the magical world can be read, and there were first images of a Graphorn with his boy and a roaring Nundus , but also a short scene in which Newt Scamander an Occamy in a teapot. Another scene shows Jacob being chased through New York by an Erumpent .

From October 2016, Google, in cooperation with Warner Bros., published selected photos of the film sets on Google Street View , which were embedded in the detailed views of the New York city map together with current photos of the streets and buildings. These included photos from MACUSA , Steen National Bank , the speakeasy The Blind Pig and Tina and Queenie Goldstein's apartment. Such a joint project had already existed with the locations of the Harry Potter films .

On October 13, 2016, a fan event was held simultaneously in London and Los Angeles . Eddie Redmayne , Katherine Waterston , Alison Sudol , Dan Fogler , director David Yates and producer David Heyman answered questions about the film at the event in London, and Colin Farrell and Jon Voight did so in Los Angeles. At the end of the event, Rowling also joined in London and commented on the future of the film series. As part of the fan event, an IMAX fan event featurette was unveiled, which was simultaneously released by Warner Bros. Pictures.

reception

Age rating

In the US, the MPAA rated the film PG-13 for violent action fantasy. For similar reasons, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire , Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and both film adaptations of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows had previously received this age rating in the USA . In Germany, where the film is rated FSK 6, the statement of reasons for the release says: “The film contains some threatening and dark scenes in which people are sometimes killed. These scenes can have a short-term frightening effect on children of primary school age, but in the context of the numerous positive and relieving scenes they do not develop any lasting frightening effect. "

From the German Film and Media Review was Fantastic Beasts and where they are to be found , despite its chill out with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reasoning states: “Even if the heroes have to fight against evil, the film is never too dark and scary, it is the best entertainment for the whole family. One is happy when the good magicians in the end restore the destroyed New York with their magic wands in a flash. "

Reviews

Although details were of the film solely of trailers and Setfotos known deemed critics like Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter before the theatrical release, the film score by James Newton Howard , but also the visual effects, production design by Stuart Craig and the costume design by Colleen Atwood as Oscar worthy . The impression that journalists had of the film after a press screening in New York on the night of November 5 to 6, 2016 was overwhelmingly positive, and the film has so far won over 84 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics .

Erin Whitney from Screencrush says , even if it is difficult to imagine that the beloved hero trio from the Harry Potter films could be topped, show Fantastic Beasts and where they can be found a top quartet of worthy successors, consisting of Newt Scamander , Jakob Kowalski and Tina and Queenie Goldstein, with whom the chemistry is right and who bring drive and magic to the film. Redmayne, according to Whitney, brings his usual shyness to the role of Newt Scamander in a surprisingly delightful way, and Fogler's goofy but lovable-played Jacob is sure to become a fan favorite, who is also at the center of some of the best sequences in the film stand Whitney sums up, Rowling and Yates manage to transport you into a magical world that you no longer want to leave.

Matt Goldberg from Collider clearly recognizes Rowling's handwriting in the film and notes that there are four storylines in the film, that of Scamander and his beasts, of Tina, of Credence and ultimately also of Grindelwald. Rowling succeeded, according to Goldberg, in interweaving them in a miraculous way, but Jacob, who helps you to keep discovering new things in the magical world after eight Harry Potter films , is of particular importance . Jacob experiences this world and the magical beasts that live in it with great astonishment, just as Harry Potter had experienced it. The difference, however, is that Jacob, like the viewer himself, is not a magician, but an outsider in this world who experiences these miracles. Malte Mansholt from Stern.de also says that Scamander's No Maj companion facilitates access to the magical world, and it was also a good decision to set the plot in New York in the twenties, so the scenario remains fresh, without anything To throw away acquaintances.

In December 2016, it was announced that the film had been shortlisted for the Best Visual Effects category at the 2017 Academy Awards .

Gross profit

In the USA, grossing results on the opening weekend were slightly below expectations and, at 74.4 million US dollars, were also slightly behind the films in the Harry Potter film series . In China, the film grossed $ 40.5 million in just three days. In Germany, where the film recorded 911,486 visitors on its opening weekend, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them became the most successful re-released film of the year in terms of box office earnings . By January 10, 2017, the film had grossed US $ 797.4 million in cinemas worldwide, passing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , which grossed US $ 796.7 million worldwide and the film with the lowest grossing from the Harry Potter film series . The total revenue of the film from screenings worldwide has so far amounted to more than 814 million US dollars, in German cinemas the film recorded almost 3.5 million visitors.

Sequels

Producer David Heyman at the premiere of the film in Japan

Back in October 2014, Warner Bros. announced that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was a film series, but at least one trilogy was planned. This was confirmed by Rowling in late February 2016 and again by Warner Bros. in early August 2016, and that David Yates would be directing again. Warner Bros. also announced that the sequel will delve deeper into the increasingly dark time for the wizarding world.

In July 2016 it was announced that Rowling had already completed work on the script for the first part of the sequel. Yates said in September 2016 that two months before the premiere of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them , if the story continues, he already knows that America is not necessarily a place to stay. Only the first film in the series is set exclusively in the USA, but the sequels will also develop in other parts of the world.

In the second film in the series, the story is further developed in Paris , but is set partly in Great Britain and again in the USA . Again, Eddie Redmayne can be seen in the role of the magic zoologist Newt Scamander, but should not necessarily be the focus of the plot, as producer David Heyman suggested in late November 2016. Credence Barebone is set to become a pivotal figure in the story, and the younger Albus Dumbledore ( Jude Law ) is also said to have an important role in the film. In addition, Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) should act as the villain. According to current plans, the role of the animals in the second part should be smaller, but the appearance of a Chinese being that has not yet been precisely determined is planned.

In mid-November 2017 it was announced that the second part of the series Fantastic Beasts: Grindelwalds Verbrechen (originally: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ) will be called. In January 2018, Yates stated that all the films in the planned series should be set in different cities.

The second part was released on November 16, 2018, two years after the first film, in the USA. Part number three should come to US cinemas on November 20, 2020, but the start date has been postponed by one year to November 12, 2021 in 2019. As part of a fan event on October 13, 2016, Rowling said that she was planning a total of five films in the series.
